Description

.l. P. GATES.
Levers for Presses.
No. 136,431, PatentedMarch4,1873.
AM PHDTO-UTHOGRAFHIL' ca u x (ossonnsfs Pmasss) UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOSEPH P. GATES, OF RED RIVER COUNTY, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LEVERS FOR PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,431, dated March 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osEPH P. GATES, of the county of Red River, in the State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements on Looks or Fastenings applicable to Shutters to Press-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of the lock, showing by the dotted lines J the lineal extension of the mortise H, Figs. 2 and 3, and tenon B, Fig. 4; also the position of the lock, the end O'against the shutters D, and the end E against the stud F.
Fig. 2 is an outline side view of the lock, bent at the joint 13, showing its position in relation to the shutter D and stud F when the shutter is unfastened-the dotted red lines Q and It showing, respectively, how far the shoulder to the joint B of section I may be dispensed with, and to what line the mortise H, in section G, may be correspondingly modified to add to the releasing capacity of the lock.
Fig. 3 is an upper or inside view of section G, showing the mortise H and the pivot-pin A by which the sections G and I are pivoted together, as in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 represents an under or inside view of section I, showing the tenon H, the flange 1, and the handle L of the lever.
Fig. 5 represents a part of an end shutter, M, and an edge view of a side shutter, D, each hinged in the usual way, as at O and P, respectively; also a part of the platen N of a press-box, the end shutter M and platen N being each represented as having a part broken off.
Description of Operation.
I premise that, in describing my invention and 1ts operation, the words upper, under,
below, raising, and above, have relation to in practical use being adjustable to that of the shutters, whether their position be as represented in the figures or otherwise; and that like letters refer to like parts in the figures.
The lock being placed in position as in Fig. 1, the bearing-points on the pivot-pin A of sections I and G, being below the line of press we and resistance between the shutter D and stud F, serve to hold the look .as represented in Fig. 1.
To unfasten the shutter, bend the joint B by raising the pivot-pin A, by the handle L, above the line of pressure and resistance, holding to the handle and abatin g the force of the shutter, and the pressure will further bend the joint B and release the shutter, as in Figs. 2 an d 5.
The superiority that I claim for my invention consists in its being convenient, simple, and eificient, and, when applied to the shut ters of a press-box in which cotton or any other elastic thing is pressed, enables the operator to abate with ease the violent shock attending the release of the shutter; and when two' locks, one near each edge of the two 0p posite edges of the same shutter, are used, enables him, with a hand on the handles of each lock, to release each edge simultaneously, avoiding the injurious wrenching of the shutter sequent to non-coincident releasing.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the door of a pressbox, the jointed locking device, constructed as described, for the purpose specified.
2. In a locking device, the combination of lever I with its stop-flange and curved head E, and the lever G with curved head 0, when pivoted together at B, said parts being arranged with relation to each other as and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH P. GATES.
