Be it known that I, ALBERT G. HERMAN- son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prescott, in the county of Pierce and State of ll isconsin, have invented a new and useful Clothespin, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to clothes pins, and it is the primary object of the invention to provide a clothes pin which may be arranged on the clothes to be dried, before the clothes are removed from the washing room, thereby eliminating the necessity of persons being exposed to the cold, during the clothes hanging operation.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including opposed jaws which will firmly grip the clothes, and insure against the clothes becoming disengaged from the pins supporting the same, under wind pressure.

A still further object of the invention is to provide means forming a part of the clothes pin, to permit the ready and secure attach.- ment of the clothes to the clothes supporting line.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of a clothes pin constructed in accordance with the present invention,

Referring to the drawing in detail, the clothes pin includes a body portion 5 which is cut away at one of its side edges, the cut away portion extending from points in spaced relation with the ends to provide a clearance for a movable arm 6, to be hereinafter more fully described.

This movable arm 6 is provided with a cut out portion 7 formed at one of its ends to provide the jaw 8, which jaw cooperates with a similar jaw 9 formed integral with the body portion 5. for clamping clothes or other articles therebetweena The cut away portion as described, is of a width equal to the width of the movable arm 6, so that one edge of the movable arm 6 will lie flush with one of the side edges of the body 5 so that the arm 6 will have a free unobstructive movement within the cut away portion to permit of the easy operation of the arm and its jaw.

A metallic securing member 10 forms a part of the pin, and this member 10 includes spaced side walls 11 and 12 formed integral with the body portion 13 thereof, the inner surface of the body portion 13 in operation, being constructed to contact with one surface of the arm 6to hold the arm 6 in proper operative relation within the cut away portion of the body 5;

Seated within the cut away portion is a coiled spring 14 which has one of its ends contacting with the shoulder 15 formed adjacent to one end of the body 5, the opposite end of said spring having contact with the straight end of the arm 6, as at 16. Thus it will be seen that the arm 6 is normally urged toward one end of the body 5 to cause the jaws 8 and 9 to contact with each other.

Elongated openings 17 are formed in the securing member 10, the same being disposed diametrically opposite each other to accommodate the operating pin 18 which extends through a suitable opening provided in the arm 6, the ends-thereof extending beyond the side walls of the body of the pin so that these ends may be grasped by the fingers of the operator for disengaging the jaws to permit an article to be inserted therebetween.

In order that the pin may be readily and easily applied to a clothes line, the spring clasp 19 is provided, and this spring clasp is shown as having one of its ends anchored to the body 5 so that the body portion there of will contact with the side of the body op posite to that in which the ewe are formed.

The body portion of this spring clasp is formed in the well known manner, the same having the central curved portion 20 to lend resiliency to the clasp, the free end of the clasp being turned upon itself to provide a guide for guiding the pin over a clothes line.

It might be further stated that the metalsecond fingers of the hand being 110* lie securing member 10 embraces a portion of the body 5, and is provided with a plurality of openings disposed in spaced relation with each other to r ceive suitable fastening means for securing the member 10 to the body 5.

In the operation of the device, it will be seen that the clothes pins may be arranged on the clothes to be dried before removing the clothes from the washing room, whereupon the clothes may be readily applied to the clothes lines by merely inserting the clasps 19 over the clothes line.

In a clothespin, abody portion having one of its side edges cut away at a point intermediate its ends, one of the end walls of said out out portion providing a shoulder, the opposite end wall of the cut out portion zproviding a'jaw, a movable arm disposed within the cut out portion and having a jaw formed on one end thereof, adapted to cooperate with the first mentioned jaw, for clamping articles therebetween, a coiled spring disposed between the shoulder and one of the arms for normally urging 'the jaws together, a securing member having connection with the body portion and having a portion thereof contacting with the arm and spring for holding the arm and spring to the "body portion, and means carried by the arm for moving the arm.
