To allcohom it may concern:
.Bclt' known that I, Josnci-i Soss, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and residing at New Yorlnin the county of New York and State be used in connection with the doorsof mo tor-vchicles-but which may alsobe used in connection with other doors or swinging members, andtho-ohject of the invention is to provide a die cast hinge or hinge member of the class specified, and means "for reinforcing andv strengthening said hinge or hinge member by asheet metal strip :tashioned to conform with the general'form of the hinge or hinge member thus materially decreasing the cost O'f'PTOdlliblOIl of? the hinge member and yet producing a strong and durable article; and ,with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of thcclass and for the purpose specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

In Fig. 1 of the drawing I have illustrated a complete hinge of the general form to which this invention relates particularly. and at 10 is shown the member of the hinge which is secured to the door frame and at 11 the member which is secured to the door, said members being secured together by a hinge pin 12 in the usual manner.
My invention relates particularly to the construction of the hinge member 11 which is shown in detail in Figs. 2 to 5 inclusive.
Said member comprises an elongatechplate 13, one endpcrtion of which is bent into hookshaped form as shown dtlle'ln Figs. 1 and 3, and the free'end o f the hook shapedf'end portion is provided with an-a11 proxiniutely cylindrical portion 15. i The hook-shaped end portion .14 of the member 11 is recessed at the opposite sides of the longitudinaleenter thereotas-shown at 16; toreceive the hook-shaped end portion17, of the member 10 of the hinge as illustrated. in Fig; 1, and
the recesseslfi dividethecylindrical end'15 of the hinge member 11 into a centralbearing 18 and end bearings 19 ;allof which are apertured as shown at 20 in FF 1g. 5=toreceive the hinge pin 12.
The plate 13, or the straight end portion 2lthereo'f is also preferably provided with a plurality; of countersunk screw apertures through which screws are adapted to pass in securing the member 11to a door or other si 'inging member. The cylindrical end 15 of-the hook-shaped end portion 14 is provided with an offset or shoulder portion 23, which extends the full width oi3wthe plate 13, or the cylindrical POIlilOl'l'lfiJihQl'd of, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and this shoulder operates connection with a, correspending shoulder 24 formed onthehinge mcmberlO to limit the swinging movement oi the hinge member 11. k v
The above description clearly sets out the general'form of the hinge member 11 and its connection with and operationgin connection with the hingemember 10, and while. the

In Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive I have shown a reinforcing sheet 25 which is located on the outer face. of the hinge member 11 and extends from the straight end portion 21 thereof to the shoulder 23 on the cylindrical portion 15. The sheet 25 is preferably provided at spaced intervals with apertures 26, one of which is shown in Fig. 3 and two of which are shown in Fig. 4, through which the metal of the hinge member 11 passes in the casting or Formation of said hinge men1- her. The opposite side edge portions of the sheet 25 are flanged inwardly as shown at 27 to form a channel of the sheet 25 and to inclose the top and bottom faces of the member 11, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawing. The flanges 27 or the sheet 25 are fashioned to conform with the shape of the hook-shaped end portion i and cylindrical portion 15 of the hinge member 11 as shown at 28 in Figs. 1, 2 and 5 of the drawing, and said flanges are pro vided with apertures 29 which correspond with the apertures in the bearings 18 and 19 of the cylindrical portion 15, T le sheet is also provided with apertures in line with the screw apertures 22.
The sheet 25, or that part thereof, which passes around the hook-shaped end portion 14 and cylindrical portion i. of the hinge member 11 is cut centrally thereof and de pressed inwardly to form acentral rein forcing member 31 which is of the same transverse width as the central bear 1g member 18 and whi h, in the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive forms a pair t al facing for the aperture 20 on the bi in member 18 as shown at The forcing member 31, as will be evident, serves to strengthen the central part of the drical portion 15 of the hinge meiibei, or the bearing 18 thereof. It will be understood that the bearings 19 are reinforced and strengthened by the top bottom flange portions 28.
From the foregoing it will be seen tnain the formation of the hinge membe 11., I first provide sheet metal strip which is fashioned to the desired form, and this sheet is then placed in a suitable mold or die into which metal is forced, and the result oi? this operation will produce the complete member with the reinforcing sheet for; part thereof and the apertures 90 and screw apertures 22 also formed therein.
