SAMUEL H. REED AND THOMAS THOMPSON, OF F REDERlOKTOWN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER-CUTTERS.
Specification formingpart oi Letters Patent No. 136,266, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that we, SAMUEL H. REED and THOMAS THOMPSON, of Fredericktown, in the county of Knox and in the Stateof Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutter-Bar for Harvester; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and. arrangement of a cutter-bar for harvesters, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, inwhich- Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a front view, of our cutter-bar. Fig. 3 shows the interior of the knifebar, and Fig. 4 shows two of the knife-sections.
A represents the knife-bar, and B B the sections of the knife. The knife-bar A is made in two parts, namely, a bottom bar and a top plate. The bottom bar is provided with a longitudinal groove, a, on its upper side, which extends nearly to the ends of the bar; and at or near the head end is an opening, 12, passing from said groove through the front edge of the bar. The ends and entire back of this bottom bar are so .much higher than the front that when the top plate is placed on the same there is formed a slot through the front edge of the knife-bar of the same depth as the thickness of the knife-sections B B. This slot extends the entire length of the groove a and opening I), and a shoulder, d, is thus formed within the knife-bar the entire length of the bar, except the opening I). The top plate is welded solid at the heel, and secured at'the point and back with rivets, thus forming a solid box, in which the knife-sections are held so that they can move neither forward nor backward. The knife-sections B B are each provided with a rib, 6, along the inner edge, on the under side.
These sections are put, one by one, in the bar A through the opening I), the rib 0 coming in the groove a, and then moved to the point end of the bar, the knife-section projecting through the slot, and held from coming out by the rib e bearing against the shoulder d. When the bar is filled in this manner a set-screw, O, is screwed through the heel-end of the bar against the last section, and thus holding them all firmly-iu place. The rib e on the last section may be enlarged at the outerend, as shown in Fig. 4, to till a part of the opening I).
Having thusfully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The bar A provided with the opening I), groove a, shoulder d, and set-screw O, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the bar A with open ing b, groove a, shoulder d, and set-screw C, the knife-sections B having ribs 0 on their inner edges, all. substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 18th day of May, 1872.
SAMUEL II. REED. THOMAS THOMPSON.
