Description

A. SUNDH.
WASTE OUTLET COVER FOR BASINS, 6L0.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-21,1919.
- 1,362,366, Patented: Dec. 14,1920
I INVENTOR v/y 5m P V ATTO EY UNITED STATES AUGUST SUNDH, 0F YONKEBS, NEW YORK.
WASTE-OUTLET COVER FOR BASINS', 8w.
Application filed August 21,1919.
To all whom it may concern:
1 3e it known that I, AUGUST SUNDH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of l/Vestchester and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Waste()utlet Covers for Basins, ze, of which the following is a specification.
Although wash-basins, sinks and the like are commonly provided with traps in their drain pipes, it is well known that such traps, especially in kitchen sinks, become filled with matter which on decomposing emits disagreeable odors. comes dry through leakage or evaporation of the liquid therein because of long non-use of the sink, sewer gas may escape at the waste outlet. My invention has for its object the prevention of such escaping odors or gas, by a simple and easily made device which operates automatically as hereinafter more particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a sink, the basin, strainer and outlet pipe at its upper portion being in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a vertical diamet ral section of my waste outlet cover. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3, 3 of Fi 2.
iiimilar letters of reference indicate like parts.
In Fig. 1 is illustrated a well known type of metal sink, the basin A being connected to the usual waste pipe 13 and trap C, and the waste outlet opening being covered with a perforated strainer My cover comprises a float-here embodied in the circular inverted box E having its circumferential edge, preferably, outwardly flared, as shown at F. Within box E fits an elastic annular gasket G of rubber or the like, the lower portion of which is flared to correspond to edge F of box E, and extends for a distance beyond said edge and terminates, preferably, in a flat outwardly turned flange II. The boxes E and I are assembled mutually inverted. The box I is placed within and closes the box IE, and the gasket G is seated between the walls of said boxes. The box I is formed by bending a metal plate, so that below the bottom J of Specification of Letters Patent.
So also if the trap be- Patented Dec. 14:, 1920.

said box, a double flange K is formed which is flared correspondingly to gasket Gr and box E. The gasket G may be secured by causing box I tightly to flt into said gasket, and so compress the same between its wall and the wall of box IE, or any suitable fastening means for connecting the two boxes and gasket may be provided.
On the bottom of box I may be arranged a weight L, through which passes a headed pin M which enters a central hole in the strainer D and so centers the cover over the drain opening. The hole in the strainer is thus a means of guiding the pin as the float rises and falls.
The gasket G serves two purposes-first, to pack the joint between boxes E and I, so that no moisture can enter the space therein, which, therefore, forms a hermetically sealed air chamber; second, the flange H on said gasket, when the cover is in place, bears upon the bottom wall of the basin, and so closes the joint around the waste outlet, so that no gas arising from the waste pipe or trap can escape to the atmosphere.
When water is drawn into the basin, the cover is caused to rise from the outlet by the air confined in the chamber formed, as stated, between the boxes E and I, as indicated in Fig. 1. Said water then is free to escape. As soon as it is drained off, the cover returns to its original closing position.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my cover prevents any possibility of the sink overflowing in case a faucet is left run ning, since the buoyancy of the float will automatically cause the outlet to become opened. The degree of buoyancy and also the pressure of the cover to close the joint between gasket and the bottom wall of the basin is easily regulated by suitably proportioning the weight L. Of course, if the gravity of the boxes and gasket is suflicient for the desired purpose, the weight L may be altogether omitted.
I claim:
A waste outlet cover for a sink or the like, comprising a float constructed to close an opening in the bottom wall of said sink and formed of two annular boxes disposed one within the other and mutually inverted, the
outer box being cylindrical and outwardly flared at its edge and the inner box being cylindrical and having a flared flange around its bottom corresponding in flare to the edge of said outer box, there being a cylindrical and flared space between the said cylindrical and flared portions of said boxes, and an elastic annular gaslzet entering and closing said space; the sald gasket restlng upon said bottom wall and supporting said float 1O thereon.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST SUNDH Witnesses:
GERTRUDE T. PORTER, MAY T. MoGARRY.
