Claims. (Cl. 241-1005) This invention relates to a drain combination, particularly of the type used for waste disposal units suspended from the drain hole of a kitchen sink. I
It is an object of the present invention to provide a drain assembly wherein a waste disposal housing is suspended below a sink on a vibration cushioning sealing ring and a drain stopper is associated with the ring in a manner to seal the ring under certain conditions and to permit flow through the ring under other conditions while blocking access to the housing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drain cover which can be easily actuated by a housewife and which is of one-piece construction, which reduces ma: terially the expense of a complete assembly.
Other features and objects of the invention relating to the construction and operation of the same will be apparent in the following description and claims.
Drawings accompany the disclosure, and the various views thereof may be briefly described as:
Figure 1, a view showing the general parts in cross section and the stopper in sealing position.
Figure 2, a sectional view of the assembly on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3, a view similar to Figure 1 showing the stopper in drain position.
Figure 4, a bottom view of the drain throat.
Figure 5, a perspective view of the cover unit.
Figure 6, a view of a supporting foot of the cover unit in its up position.
Figure 7, a view of a supporting foot in its sealing positron.
Referring to the drawings, a waste receiving chamber 20 has a narrowed neck portion 22 with an outwardly flanged lip 24. A sink 26 has an opening 28, which has a drain collar 30 supported therein, the drain collar having an upper flange 32 which engages the edge of the opening 28 and having a lower lip portion 34 extending inwardly just below an outer annular recess 36 designed to receive a snap ring 38.
Surrounding the drain collar 30 is an annular supporting plate 39 adapted to bear against a gasket 40 below the opening 28 in the sink 26. A locking flange 42 has an upper lip portion 44 which surrounds the drain collar 30 and is maintained in vertical position by snap ring 38. Directly below the flange 42 is a second locking flange 46 having a cross-sectional configuration similar to that of the flange 42 so that the two flanges engage at their edges. Each is provided with three equally spaced extensions 48 apertured to pass a threaded headless screw 50, one end of which bears against the lower side of the annular plate 39. This screw is threaded in the opening in the flange 42 and a nut 52 bears against the lower surface of flange 46.
Interposed between the inner edge 54 of flange 46 and the lower end 34 of the drain collar 30 is a soft insert 60 preferably formed of neoprene rubber or some similar resilient material. This resilient member 60 provides a ice fseal between the upper endof the chamber 20 and the extending fingers '64 which project to the center of the opening into close proximity to each other.
A plurality of T-shaped openings 66 separate the'finge'rs, the cross barof each T providing a small arcuate opening 68 adjacent the perimeter of the lip 34 ofthe drain collar 30. A small -bead 70 is raisedfrorn the mer'r'ibe'r '60 to lie inside of the lip 34 and outside of the opening 68. The stopper S shown in Figure 5 consists of a single piece of metal which is formed to have an angled annular body portion 80, which has a neck portion 82 and a rounded handle portion 84. I
The annular portion terminates in a radius 86, which then flanges downwardly and inwardly at 88. On the flange 88 are located a plurality of foot portions 90 having diverging edges 92 at the bottom and converging edges 94 on the sides. These foot portions 90 are adapted to cooperate with the openings 68 in the member 60 to support the bottom edge 96 of the stopper member above the seal member 60 as shown in Figure 6.
When downward pressure is placed on the stopper member the foot portions will be pressed through the resilient openings 68 so that the tapered side walls 94 engage the ends of the opening 68 to clamp the edge 96 of the stopper in sufliciently tight engagement with the surface of the resilient member. 60 that the opening of the drain assembly will be closed in a liquid seal against water in the sink.
In Figure 3, the stopper is shown in the drain position wherein it effectively closes the throat of the assembly against the ingress or egress of solid objects but still permits fluid and small particles to flow around its edge to the flexible member 60 and the openings therein. The flexible member 60 with the fingers 64 provides a baflle assembly similar to baffles which have been previously used.
I claim:
1. In a drain assembly of the type for associating a waste receiving chamber of a comminuting device to a drain opening in a sink which comprises a drain collar, mounting means, engaging a sink, said waste receiving chamber, and said drain collar, for supporting said collar and said chamber on said sink in alignment with a drain opening in said sink, a resilient cushioning member interposed between the waste receiving chamber and the drain collar, the resilient member having a plurality of openings therein disposed around its perimeter, a stopper member having a bottom edge portion dimensioned to seal against the annular margins of said resilient member, and means on said stopper member adapted to engage margins of said openings in said resilient member to support the. stopper member above the resilient member, said means. being projectible through said openings to clamp the stopper member in sealing position against the resilient member.
2. A device as defined in claim 1 in which the resilient,- member is provided with a plurality of flexible fingers which project toclose proximity at the center of the.- member, said fingers being separated by T-shaped slots, the cross bars of the T-shaped slots forming the openings.- which co-operate with the means on the stopper member-- to support it in its two positions.
3. A device as defined in claim 1 in which the means on the stopper member for engaging the resilient member comprise downwardly projecting foot portions having bottom edges diverging upwardly and away from the center and side edges converging upwardly.
4. A combination stopper and guard for a disposal unit' iai nted Mar. 3, 1959 for sink installation which comprises a rubber insert having a perimeter to be locked in assembly between parts of the disposal unit at the entrance thereto and provided with a plurality of openingsinside the perimeter accessible from the top of the assembly,'and a stopper unit having a body portion and a rim on said portion to Contact and cooperate with said perimeter to seal the entrance to the unit, and a plurality of downward projections adjacent said rim portion positioned to engage'certain of. said openings, said projections having a width intermediate the ends thereof greater than said openings whereby the stopper unit may be, supported above said insert when .said projections are partially entered into'said holes.
5 wtih said perimeter when pressed through said openings.
