% INVENTOR UNITED STATES THOMAS BEDFERN, OF KEARNEY, NEW JERSEY.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1920.
Application filed July 18, 1919. Serial No. 311,753.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS REDFERN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kearney, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Driers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in clothes driers.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of clothes driers to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive device of strong and durable construction designed to be readily applied to and removed from a stove pipe, kitchen boiler,
or the like, and equipped with means forsupporting clothes and various other fabrics in close proximity to a stove pipe or kitchen boiler in order that the heat thereof may be utilized for drying the clothes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clothes drier of this character capable of adjustment and provided also with adjustable means for enabling it to be firmly clamped in position on a stove pipe or boiler.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of one of the members of a clothes drier constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of the device applied to a stove pipe.
Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating a modification of the invention especially adapted for use on kitchen boilers.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view illustrating the construction of the adjustable clampin device.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged plan view of the same.
In the accompanying drawing, in which like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures in which is illustrated the preferred embodiments of the invention, the clothes drier shown in Figs. 1 to 23, inclusive, comprises in its construction two similar members 1 each constructed of a single piece of wire or other suitable material doubled to form an outer, oblong, terminal loop 2 and twisted to form a body portion 3 and extended from the twisted body portion to provide substantially straight shanks 4 adapted to receive a slide 5 for forcing laterally curved clamping arms 6 and 7 firmly into engagement with a stove pipe 8 or similar heating element. The arms 6 and 7 are curved to conform to the configuration of the stove pipe and the shanks 4 normally diverge and are adapted to be drawn together by the slide 5. The clamping arm 6 has its terminal extended laterally to provide a projecting stud or hook 8 and the other clamping arm 7 is coiled at intervals to provide a plurality of spaced eyes 9 adapted to receive the stud or hook of the other member of the device. The studs or hooks and the co-acting eyes provide an adjustment which co operates with the adjustment of the shanks 4 to enable the device to fit stove pipes of different diameters and to firmly engage the same.
The slide 5 consists of a single piece of material bent into substantially oblong shape to receive the shanks 4 and having its terminals 10 spaced and curved inwardly to partially embrace the shanks 4.
The shanks may be provided at their outer sides with notches 11 and the slide is then preferably constructed of square metal and presents relatively sharp edges 12 for engaging the notches whereby it is prevented from accidentally slipping from its adjusted position.
The stove pipe may be equipped at intervals with the clothes drier which'may also be applied to steam pipes and the like and when the device is employed in connection with a kitchen boiler, it may be advantageous to arrange the supporting means as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
In Fig. 4 the clothes drier comprises a member 13 having a pair of supporting elements 14 each constructed similar to that already described and having an outer terminal loop 15, a twisted body portion and shanks 16 receiving a slide 17. The supporting elements are connected by a curved i normally diverging clamping portion 18 and are provided with laterally extending curved clamping arms 19 having terminal eyes 21 adapted to receive studs 22 of a coacting member 23 preferably curved as shown and having its ends bent outwardly to form the terminal studs 22. The connecting portion 18, clamping arms 19 and the member 23 are adapted to embrace a water boiler 24 as shown in Fig. 1. The slides 17 and the shanks 16 provide ample adjustment for securing the device to a boiler. This construction provides a sectional clamping ring in which the sections have both a longitudinal adjustment with respect to each other and a lateral adjustment to vary the diameter of the ring.
Any number of eyes 21 may, of course, be provided if desired, but as boilers of this character are of a standard diameter the adjusting means shown is deemed sufficient. The location of the supporting elements 14; at the front is generally necessary, owing to the arrangement of the boilers 24, but the location of the supporting elements or clothes supporting arms may of course be varied as will be readily understood.
What is claimed is A clothes drier of the class described including a supporting arm provided at the inner portion with spaced straight shanks provided with curved clamping arms extending laterally from the shank, said shanks being provided at their outer sides with flat faces having notches arranged at intervals, the inner faces of the shanks being smooth and curved transversely a curved coacting member connecting the said clamping arms and cooperating therewith to form a clamping ring, andra substantially oblong slide receiving the straight shanks and extending across the space be tween the same and consisting of a continuous side or portion and approximately hook shaped terminal portions embracing the shanks and limiting both the relative 1nward and outward movement of the same,
said hook shaped terminal portions being provided with beveled edges for engaging the said notches for holding the slide against movement longitudinally of the shanks.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
