These bolts are connected together by a coiled spring near their upper ends, which yields when the back or thicker portion'of a knife is forced between the cylinders in the act of polishing the same.

IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFE-POLlSH ERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 136,188, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, FRANCIS W. TARBLE, of Gharlestown, in the county of Middlesex, and HORACE W. SAWYER, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts,"
have invented certain Improvements in Knife- Polishers, of which the following is a specification:
The object of our invention is to provide a cheap, simple, convenient, and durable means for polishing knives and forks; and it consists of two. elastic adjustable cylinders coated with emeryfand connected to a base side by side, by means of screw-bolts which pass through a hole in the center of such cylinders, and are secured firmly to such base, their opposite ends being provided with thumb-nuts, which have a bearing upon collars that rest upon the ends of the cylinders. These bolts are connected together by a coiled spring near their upper ends, which yields when the back or thicker portion'of a knife is forced between the cylinders in the act of polishing the same.
