FOLDING DISYLAY-BOX.
To all to hom it may aonccrm' Be it known that we, JosnrH B. SINGER,
hinged connecting member therebetween, thev whole being formed of one piece of material and adapted to be maintained 1n. set-up position without the use of glue, staples or other such-means, and in a manner as to provide a thoroughly protective box, and at the same time a'very attractive one when placed in display position. I
lVe further propose to provide a display panel portion forming a part of the one-- piece construction and a bottom construction forthe container portion of the box oi double thickness, and from the outer thickness of which the hinged member is formed.
Another object is to produce a blank so arranged as to conserve material, it being possible to arran e for cutting several blanks from a sheet, so that projections on one blank extend into recesses of the adjacent ones.
A further important object is to provide a novel interlocking means adapted greatly facilitate the setting up of the boxes, and to'relieve, to a great extent, injury or wear upon the fingers oi the operator setting up such box, the construction doing away with the necessity of handling the interlocking tongue portions, and the press-- ing out or holding of the cut-out portions for receiving the tongue, as has been the necessary procedure heretofore in other W' es of boxes.
Vith these and other objects in-view, an BIIIbOdlIDGIIlL of our invention 18 shown 111 he accompanying drawings, and this emiodiment will be hereinafter more fully deacribed with reference thereto, fand the inention will be finally pointed out in the laims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box Specification of Letters Patent.

formed according to our invention, and
showing the same in set-up display position.
Fig. 2 is a perspectiveview of the same closed, and showing the. under side thereof.
F i 3 is a lan view of the blank from whic 1 the box 18 formed.
Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the box, and showing the container portion and the cover portion spaced from each other by means of the hinged connecting portion.
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective View showing the interlocking parts at one end of the container portion before the same are brought into actual interlocking. relation, and,
Fig. 7 is a similar view showing the parts in interlocking relation, and for l ning one end of the container portion of the box.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the' several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, the box, according to our present invention, comprises gcnerall y a container portion A adapten to contain the goods, a cover portion 13, adapted to telescopically engage the container portion in theclosed position of the box,- and to support the same raised at one end, and in inclined display position when open, and a connecting lunged member C lnngedly connected at one end to the edge of one end of the cover, and at its other end to the base of the container portion substantially along its center and along a. transverse hinged line, the hinged member adapted, during the opening of the box, to guide the (over into engagement with the under side of the container portion to support the same in inclined display position. This general type of box is disclosed in our pending application, Serial No. 125,575. A display panel D is provided at the upper edge of therear end of the container portion lying flat upon the goods contained in the box in the closed position, and adapted to be raised in open position, as shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now to Fig. 3, the blank from which the box formed, comprises an elongated central portion consisting of an end flap 10, provided with tongues 11 and 12, projecting from its ends, two end niwtinm 13 and 14, a rectangular bottom portion 15, an end portion 1-6, a top display panel portion 17 partially scored, transversely and' centrally adjacent the side edges, as at 18 and 19, a dis lay portion 20 of any desired shape, and pre erably ornamental, projecting from the, half'of the portion 17, adjacent the portion16 into a cut-out 18", in the other half.
,Adjacent the portion 17 there is provided an end flap portion 21, a rectangular bottom portion 22, provided w th an interior transverse score l1ne 23, spaced from the longitudinal side edges and connecting at its.
ends to the ends of slits 24 and 25 extending to the corners at one end of the pdrtion 22, thereby forming a hinged part 26, adapted to be swung about the line23. To the end of the' connected part 26 there are connected the parts of the blank from which the cover of theboixpis adapted to be formed, and comprising, in pait, an end portion 27, a top portion 28,131 pair of end portions 29 and 30 and an end flap 31, having projecting tongues 32 and 33 at itsends.
At the ends'of the end-portion 21 there are provided flaps 34'a'nd35, ani'talong the longitudinal edges of the bottoin portion 22 theref are provided pairs of side portions tlfi, 37'
and 38, 39, the portions 37 and .39 adapted, as will presently more fully appear, to be folded inwardly upon the poitions 36 and 38.
At the ends of the portions 37 and 39,
. removed from contiguity to the end portion 21 and the flaps 34 and 35, there are provided flaps 40 and 41, and adjacent'the same, and in the longitudinal free edges of the said portions 37 and 39 there are provided cut-outs 42 and 43, of semi-circular shape, and of such size as to permit insertion therein of the semi-circular tabs or tongues 11 and 12 of the flap 10 for the purpose of locking the box in set-up position, as will hereinafter be more fully pointed out.
Extending from the longitudinal edges of the portions 27 and 28 there are provided side forming, parts, similar in form to the parts 34. to 43. and comprising flaps 4i and 45, pairs of side portions 4-6, 47, and 43, 41), flaps 50 and 51 being provided at the ends of the portions 47, 49, and semi circular cut-outs 52 and 53 being provided in the longitudinal free edges of the portions 47 and 49, and adapted, as will presn Figii', action the tabs will be bent substantialiy and 21, together with the portion. 1'5, are bent upwardly at right angles to-the bot tom portions and .22, and the flap extensions 34 and ot' the portion 2.1 are bent forwardly into line with the longitudinal. side edges of the bottom portions, where upon theportions 36Iand38 are folded upwardly" at the outer side of the pertions 34 and 3 5, and"theportions 3? and 39 downwardly at the'under side, embracing the same. The endflapsatt) and 4:1 are folded inwardly=in line wi h the transverse ends, of the bottom portions, and embraced by the end portions 13 and 14, the portioi'z it being bent"i.ipu'ardly from the bottom portion 15 attheonter side of the iiap, whiie the portion is bent dowmvardly at the inner side. D'uring this last action the flap 10 carrieddown into engagement w the bottormes indiratedin 3, 1nd the tabs 121 and 12 at the ends, autonatieally enter the cut-outs 12 and 43, the zoo-2; ieing; thereby locked in setup position, as shown it will be seen th din at right angles to the flap it), as they en- .gage the inner side portions of the box, and as they come into relation with the cut-outs 42 and 43 their inherent springiness will cause them to expand into locking relation therewith, the slightly inward movement of the portion 13, due to its inherent springi ness, moving the tabs into offset relation with the eat-outs and beneath the p " ms 37 and 39, so that the box is jllfitu i etfectively locked in set-up position, and with out the necessity of the ope 'ator ta'niching;- the tongues or flaps, or the cut-outs.
The container portion of the box is thus formed, and the cover portion remains to he formed, the parts of the blank, therefore, being hingedly connected to the bottom the rontainer portion by the hinged portion 26. The end portion 22' is bent upwardly at right angles to the bottom 28,the flaps 44. and 45 forwardly along the longitud i nal edges of the bottom portions, and are embraced by the folding upon themselves of the side portions l6 and $7, and LS 49. The flaps and 51 are bent inwardly, and are einb'aced by folding upon themselves of the end. portions2= and 30, the tabs and 33 inti-u'ioekingly engaging the rnt outs 52 and in a similar-manner to the inter,-
locking of the flaps 11 and 12 With the cutouts 42 and 1-3 of the container portion. The box is now complete.
Among the advantages of our improved box may be pointed out the extreme facility of setting up the boxes, the economy of manufacture due to the forming of the box from a single blank, and Without the use. of glue, staples or other extraneous means, the thoroughly protective nature of the box, all of the walls and the bottom of the container ill-5 attractive and easyto set up counter display portion being of double thickness, vand the handling of the sharp edges of the cut-out in the present device,
and the -tongues. This is obviate and the same may be set up with a great many less movements on the part of the "operator, and, therefore,
a greater'number of boxes may be set up ortions,
within a given time.
The arrangement of the parts of the box is such that when set up, the visible portions thereof are all on one side of the blank, so that cardboard, having only a finished surface on one side, need be used and the whole exposed surface of the box may be printed with suitable decorative and advertising matter descriptive of :the goods contained in the box by printing on one side of the blank only.
We have illustrated and described a preferred and satisfactory embodiment of our invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
