Be it known that I, GEORGE A. SE13, citizen of the United States, and resident of Ilion, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting- Machines, of which. the following is a specification.
My invention relates to typewriting machines and more particularly to. paper feed or controlling devices therefor.
The main object of my-invention is to provide a divided or two-part rock-shaft for the paper feeding or controlling devices so connected and supported that when either part or section is turned it will, after aslight lost motion, cause a turning movement also of the other part or section, whereby the paper feeding or controlling devices mounted on said parts or sections may be moved together.
A further object is to provide each shaft I rially modifying the structural features of such machines as they now exist. 7
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear my invention consists in features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices set forth in the following description andparticularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In front of the platen and below the printing line isa divided rock shaft designated as a whole by the reference numeral 6. This shaft extends throughout the lengthof the platen and intermediate the end plates 1 of the platen frame and comprises two separate and distinct parts or-sections. Each section consistsof a main body portion 7 which 1s rectangular in cross section and is provided at its outerend with a cylindrical portion '8, which has a bearing in a sleeve or bushing. 9 'threadedinto a tapped opening in an end plate of the platen frame. The sleeve has ahexagonal or octagonal head 10 adapted for a thin wrench and by which the sleeve may be threaded into and out ,of the tapped opening. The inner end of each bearing sleeve 9 coacts with a bearing shoulder 8 on its shaft section to resist an outer thrust of the latter. Theinner end portion of each shaft section extends beyondits bearing and is slabbed "off on one side to form a fiat contact face 20 where it overlaps and coacts with" the corresponding part on the other section. It will be understood of course that the two slabbed off or flat contact portions 20 areloose or unattached to each other but have a bearing one against the other within the loosely surrounding sleeve, so that when one shaft section is turned it will first receive a slight independent movement and then its motion will be transmitted to the other section through the free, overlapping flat contact faces 20. 'Thus not only does the construction enable both feed rolls to be thrown off by anoperation of either section, or its finger piece 11, but it also enables thc springs to be self-balancing so'as to equalize the pressure of the separate feed rollers 24. If for example the thickness of paper is greater at one feed'roller than at the other, the lap ioint permits an automatic whole,-the construction is strong and firm and adapted to any lengthof carrlage and.

'In assembling sleeve or bushing 9 is seated on the bearing portion 80f its shaft section. The section is then introduced endwise through the tapped opening in the end plate in which the associate bushing 9 is to'be received and is then passed through the sleeve 22 of the corresponding paper finger and through the bearing 16'for the shaft section and then into the sleev'e21. The bushing isthen shaft the parts each. bearing [or arm 11 with a stop or lug 25 which I affords aslight lost threaded'into-its end platefcarrying its shaft section along with it, by reason of the engagement of the'latter with the shoulder 8, thus moving the inner end of the section farther into the sleeve 21. .The other shaft section is introduced into place in a corresponding manner, the inner end of the shaft section being brought into the overlapping arrangement shown when the second section is introduced in place.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a typewritin machine, the combination of a platen frame, a rock shaft comprising two separate sections supported at their outer ends by the platen frame, means for connecting said sections at their inner end portions so as to turn together and permit a slight relativeturning movement for a limited extent, margin paper controlling members carried by and adjustable along said rock shaft, and hand controlled means for rocking said shaft.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen frame, a rock shaft comprising two separate sections supported at their outer ends by the platen frame, means for connecting said sections at their inner end portions so as to turn together and permit a slight relative turning movement for a limited extent, means carried by the platen frame for supporting each shaft section near its inner end, margin paper con-, trolling members carried by and adjustable along said rock shaft, a spring for turning said shaft. and hand controlled means for rocking said shaft against the power of said spring.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen frame. a rock shaft comprising two separate sections supported at their outer ends b the platen frame. a lapjoint formed at the inner end portions of said sections. a sleeve surrounding said lapjoint whereby a slight relative turning movement of the sections may take place before they are caused to turn together. and margin pa er ontrolling members carried by and adiustable along said rock shaft.
4. 5. In a typewriting machine, the com bination of a platen frame, a rock shaft comprising two separate sections supported at their outer ends by the platen frame, each section having its main body portion angular in cross-section and its inner end portion cylindricaland slabbed off to form a lapjoint with the corresponding end of the other section. a sleeve surrounding the lapjoint and holding the two co-acting inner end portions of the sections together, means carried by the platen frame and co-actin with the inner cylindrical end portion of each section to form a M rin an i t therefor, a spring for turning said shaft, and a margin paper controlling member carried by and adjustable along the angular portion of each section and connected to turn therewith.

8. In a tvpewritingmachine, the combination with a platen, of two shaft sections, each supported at its inner end and at its outer end, connecting means whereby when either shaft section is turned it causes a turning movement of the other shaft section, and a paper feeding device on each shaft section. r
