To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typeriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Hy invention relates to what may be termed fractional line spacing devices for typewriting machinesthat is to say, a device which enables the platen to be rotated fractional degrees of the line-spacing attained with the aidof the ordinaryline-spacing mechanism, in order that any desired portion of the platen may be brought to the printing-line, thus enabling the operator to readily fill in partly-printed blanks or to bring those portions of the paper to the printing-line which cannot be brought to such position with the ordinary line-spacing mechanism and without independently adjusting the paper on the platen. The device is likewise available as a means for distributing the wear-over the entire surface of the platen instead of upon given lines, as is the case when the ordinary line-spacing mechanism alone is employed.
To the above ends my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

In various views parts are omitted to more clearly illustrateoth'er parts of the structure. The fractional-line-spacing device which constitutes the subject-matter of the present invention is shown applied to the platen-carriage of a Yost machine, though it should be understood that it may be applied to other descriptions of type-writing machines, and to this end various changes may be made in the construction andoperation of the device without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The yoke-like frame 1 is connected at its free ends by screws 2 to an end plate 3, which is threaded to receive a screw 4, that has a cylindrical inner end 5, which is seated in a bearing 6 on the head 7 of the platen 8. The opposite end of.the platen has rigidly secured thereto a finger-wheel 9, which is recessed for the reception of a bearing-stud 10, secured to the yoke 1 of the platen-frame, and which bearing-stud, with the cylindrical portion 5 of the screw 4, form journals on which the platen revolves. The platen-head 7 is provided with peripheral teeth 11 and end teeth 12 on the outer face thereof, the platenhead itself being secured to the core 13 of the platen by screws 14.. The finger-wheel 9 and the platen-head 15 at the left-hand end of the platen-frame, to which the fin gerwheel is rigidly connected, are secured in place by a headed rod 16, the head 16 of which is seated within the recess 17 in the fingerwheel, whereas the opposite end of said rod 16 is threaded at 18 and takes in a threaded opening in the head 7, (see Fig. 5,) and thus secures the head 15 and finger-wheel 9 to the platen. The platen-head l5 and finger-wheel 9 are prevented from rotating with relation to the platen by pins 19, whichare oted thereto a line-spacing pawl 24, which is provided with a laterally-projecting pin 25, that extends through an opening in the arm 23 and constitutes a pivot for the line-spacing pawl. The pawl is maintained under tension of a spring 26,which is secured at one end 27 to the arm 23, and the opposite end of the spring is secured within the split portion 28 of the pin.
Mounted loosely on the shaft 21 is a controlling piece or stop 29, which is slotted at 30 for the reception of a pin 31, which projectsv laterally from an extension 32 of the bearing 20. This socallec controllingpiece 29 is provided with an abutting surface 33, against which the line-spacing pawl 24 is adapted to abut in its upward movement. The position of the controlling-piece 29 may be regulated by a spring-pressed engaging pin 34, that is carried by the controlling-piece and is provided at its lower end with a contracted portion 35, that is adapted to be seated in any one of the three apertures 36 in the extension'32, and the contracted portion may be withdrawn from the apertures by the finger-piece 34, which contains the spring that normally maintnins the pin in engagement. The adjustment of the controlling-piece 29 regulates the upward throw' and position of the line-spacing pawl 24 on its pivot, and thus regulates the line-spacing movement thereof, for single double, and triple spacing.
The screw 4 in extending through the end plate 3 projects through a boss 37, that extends inwardly from the end-plate and serves as a bearing for a carrier 38, that is concentric to the line-spacing ratchet-wheel. The carrier is adapted to turn on this bearing, and
I thus will turn on the same pivotal center that the platen revolves on, and it is prevented from endwise movement in one direction by the end plate 3 and in the opposite direction by a sleeve 6, which surrounds the bearing 6. This carrier has screwed thereto at 38 a yoke-like spring 39, provided with ears 40, that constitute bearings for a detent-roller 41. This spring is effective to press the detentroller 40 against the teeth 12 on the platenhead and to act in the capacity of the ordinary detent-spring, which prevents an accidental displacement or rotation of the platen and for other purposes which will hereinafter appear. The carrier 38 is likewise provided with an arm 42, which is internally screwthreaded for the reception of a screw or stop 43, which limits the downward movement of the line-spacing pawl 24 and which may be maintained in its adjusted position by a locknut 44. The carrier is likewise provided with an abutment 45, against which the rear end of a screw 46 bears.- This screw 46 is threaded in an internally-threaded bearing 47, that is carried by the end plate 3, and the forward end of the screw is provided with a knurled head 48, by means of which the screw may be adjusted in its bearing. Lock-nuts 49 may be provided on' the rear portion of the screw, and said nuts are adapted to abut against the bearing 47, and thus limit the forward movement of the screw and prevent its withdrawal from the bearing.
A spring 50 is connected to and bears at one end against a screw 51, carried by the end plate, and bearsat its opposite end 52 against the carrier 38. This spring bears intermediate its ends upon the front bar portion 1 of the platen-frame, thus maintaining a tension upon the carrier 38, which is'effective topress the abutment thereof against the rear end of the screw 46. The tension of this spring is such as to prevent a movement of the carrier during the rotation of the platen. The tension may, however, be readily overcome by the adjusting-screw'46.
In the operation of the device for ordinary line-spacing a movement of the finger-piece 22 in the direction of the arrow adjacent thereto in Fig. 1 of the drawings is effective to move the line-spacing pawl from the position represented in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 4, and during this movement of the pawl the platen will be rotated the distance of one, two, or more teeth of its line-spacing wheel, as determined by the position of the controlling-piece 29. When the operator desires to bring a portion of the platen to the printingline that cannot be brought to such position with the aid of the ordinary line-spacing mechanism, the platen is rotated by the handwheel 9 or otherwise until that portion of the paper where the writing is to be produced is adjacent to the printing-line. The fractionalline-spacing device may then be employed tomove the platen independently of the 'ordinary line-spacing mechanism until the paper has been brought to the proper position. The movement of the fractional-line-spacing mechanism is produced by turning the adjusting-screw 46, which is effective to turn the carrier in the desired direction, and the spring 39 and detent-roller will move therewith. This movement of the detentroller while it bears upon the teeth 12 of the line-spacing wheel will carry the platen with it, thus bringing the paper to the desired position. The fractional-line-spacing device is efiective not only as such, but in the operation thereof it is also efiective to change the lines of impact of the type upon the platen, thus evenly distributing the wear throughout the surface of the platen. that the detent-roller 41 acts as a detent-roller in the operation of the ordinary line-spacing mechanism and likewise constitutes a portion of the fractional-linc-spacingdevice. It will be seen, furthermore, that no material changes are necessary to apply the fractionalline-spacing device, which constitutes the subject of the presentinvention, to the Yost type-writing machine.
While specific-reference has been made to the'fact that the line -spacing wheel shown and described is provided with peripheral teeth 11 as well as the edge teeth 12, the pe ripheral teeth in the present instance perform no function and may be omitted.

In atype-writing machine, the combina: tion of aplaten,line-spacingmechanism therefor including a ratchet -wheel, and a fractional-line-spacing device which comprises a spring-pressed detent-roller which at all times bears against the ratchet-wheeh'a pivoted support for said roller, and means for, moving" said 'support around its pivotal center to efiect a movement of the platen for fractional-line spacing.
4. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a ratchet-wheel secured thereto, a line-spacing pawl which cooperates with said ratchet-wheel to eifect an ordinary linespacing movement of the platen, means for moving. said pawl, a detent which bears against said ratchet-wheel, a pivoted spring for supporting said detent, which spring is adapted to remain fixed with relation to the movement of the ratcl1et-wheel or to be moved to effect a movement of the ratchet-wheel and platen, and means for moving said detent.
5. In a type-writing machine, the combinamovement of the ratchet-wheel or to be moved to effect a movement of the ratchet-wheel and platen, a spring whichmaintains said detent in contact with the ratchet-wheel, means for positively moving said detent in one direction to efiect a movement of the ratchet-wheel and platen, and a spring for moving the detent in an opposite direction, the tension of said moving spring being sufficient to resist the tendency of the detent to move with the ratchet-Wheel when it is moved independently of the detent.

In a type-writing machine, the combinalie tion of a platen, a ratchet-wheel secured there to, a line-spacing pawl which cooperates with said ratchet-wheel to effect an ordinary linespacing movement of the platen, means for moving said pawl, a detent-roller which bears against said ratchet -'wheel and which is adapted to remain fixed with relation to the movement of tlie ratchet-wheel or to'bemoved: onthe same pivotal center to effect a move ment of the ratchet-wheel and platen, a spring,
which maintains said detent-roller in contact with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel, means for positively moving said detent-roller on said pivotal center in one direction to effect a turning of the ratchet wheel and platen, and a spring for moving the detent-roller on said pivotal center in an opposite direction, the tension of said moving spring being sufficient to resist the tendency of the detentroller to turn on said pivotal center with the ratchet-wheel when the latter is moved independently of the detent-roller.
7. In a type-writing machine, the combination of aplaten, a ratchet-wheel secured thereto, a line-spacing pawl which cooperates with said ratchet-wheel to effect an ordinary linespacing movement of the platen, means for moving said pawl, a spring-pressed detent which bears against the ratchet-wheel, a pivoted carrier for said detent, which carrier is adapted to turn on the same pivotal center that the platen revolves on, and means for turning said carrier in either direction, which turning means resists the tendency of the detent to turn with the ratchet-wheel when the ratchet-wheel is rotated by the line-spacing pawl.
8. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a ratchet-wheel secured thereto, a line-spacing pawl which cooperates with said ratchet-wheel to effect an ordinary linespacing movement of the platen, means for moving said pawl, a bearing concentric to said ratchet-wheel, a carrier which is loosely mounted upon said bearing, a yoke-spring secured to the carrier, a detent-roller carried by said spring and bearing on the teeth of the ratchet-wheel, and an adj ustingscrew which cooperates with the carrier and affords a movement thereof on its bearing.
9. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen-frame, a platen, a platen-head secured to the platen, a ratchet-wheel formed on the platen-head, a line-spacing pawl which cooperates with the teeth of said ratchet-wheel to effect an ordinary line-spacing movement of the platen, means for actuating said pawl, a bearing on the platen frame and concentric to the ratchet-wheel, a carrier loosely mounted on said bearing, a spring secured to the carrier, a detent carried by the spring, which detent bears upon the teeth of said ratchetwheel, an adjusting-screw carried by the platen-frame and cooperating with the carrier to positively move it in one direction on its bearing, and a spring carried by the platenframe and bearing against the carrier to effect a movement thereof on its bearing in an opposite direction, the tension of said spring being sufficient to resist the tendency of the detent and carrier to move with the ratchetwheel when the latter is moved backwardly.
10. In a type-writing machine, the combination with a platen and a regular line-spacing mechanism therefor including a ratchet-wheel and a. pivoted detent, of means for turning together the detent, ratchet-wheel and platen fractional-line-space distances.
11. In a type-writin g machine, the combination of a platen, a ratchet-wheel secured thereto and a pivoted detent adapted to be turned and to turn the ratchet-wheel and platen fractional-line-space distances.
12. In a type-writin g machine, the combination of a platen, a ratchet-wheel secured thereto, a detent for said wheel mounted axially thereof, and means for turning said detent about its axis-and thereby causing it to turn the ratchet-wheel and platen.
13. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a line-spacing pawl, a linespace ratchet-wheel secured to the platen, a spring-pressed detent mounted axially of said wheel, means for holding said detent relatively stationary when the line-spacing pawl is actuated, and means for turning said detent, ratchet-wheel and platen independently of said line-spacing pawl.
14. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a line-spacing ratchet-wheel, a pivoted lever, a spring-pressed detent carried by said lever, and means for moving the lever in opposite directions so as to cause the platen to turn fraetional-line-space distances.
l5. Inatype-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a line-spacing ratchet-wheel fixed to rotate with the platen, a pivoted spring-pressed detent that bears at all times upon said ratchet-wheel, and means for adjusting said detent in opposite directions for fractional-line spacing.
16. In atype-writing machine, the combination of a platen, aline-spacing ratchet-wheel fixed to rotate with the platen, a lever pivoted at the pivotal center of the platen, a springpressed detent carried by said lever and bearing at all times on the line-spacing ratchetwheel, and means for adjusting said lever in opposite directions to turn the platen through the detent for fractional-line spacing.
17 In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a line-space wheel secured thereto, a line-spacing pawl, a detent for said wheel, a detent-carrier mounted axially of said wheel, a spring secured to said carrier and supporting said detent, an adjustingscrew mounted in the platen-frame, a lug on said carrier to cooperate with said screw, and a spring acting on said carrier to cause said lug to bear against said screw, whereby the detent remains relatively fixed when the linespace pawl is actuated but may turn about the axis of said carrier and ratchet-wheel when the adj listing-screw is manipulated and by such turning movement cause the ratchet wheel and platen to turn fractional-line-space distances.
18. In atype writing machine, the combination of a platen, a ratchet -wheel that turns therewith, a detent that bears upon said ratchet -wheel and is adapted to be turned therewith, a spring, the tension-of which nor mally maintains said detent against movement in one direction with the ratchet-Wheel,
and means for overcoming the tension of said spring to turn the ratchet-wheel and platen through the detent.
19. Ina type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a ratchet-wheel that turns.
therewith, a pivoted detent that bears upon said ratchet-wheel, a spring, the tension of which normally maintainssaid detent against movement in one direction on its pivotal center, and adjustably-fixed means for resisting the pivotal movement of thedetent in an opposite direction and overcoming the tension of said spring.
20. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a ratchet-wheelwhich turns therewith, a pivoted detent-carrier, a springpressed detent carried by said carrier, a spring detent, a spring acting on one of said arms,
and an adjusting device acting on the other of said arms.
