Be it known that. HERBERT R. WHITE, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of Lowell, in the county of Middlesexand State" 'of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification,
/ -My invention relates to typewriting machines and more particularly to means for effecting a fractional line spacing of the platen.
One object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient. fractional line s acing device that can be readily applied to di erent styles of typewri-tin'g machines.

The slot 16 is in the nature of a notch in one wallof the slot 15. The slot 15 is formed inpart by striking up ears or lugs 17 from the body of the metal from which the guide plate is formed; These ears are tapped to receive screw stops18 for purposes which will hereinafter appear. A so-called carrier or sleeve 19 surrounds .the platen shaft and isreceived betweenfit'he wheel 11,and a sleeve or collar 20 secured to the platen shaft by a set screw 21 whic'hpasses into a threaded opening in the collar 20 and bears at its inner end against the platen shaft. opening between two of the teeth 12 will be brought opposite the engaging portion 24 of the pawl 22, as shown in Fig. 1 so that a move ment of the pawl to the right will bring it into engagement between two teeth of the wheel 1 1 and a rotary movement of the pawl, either backward'or forward, will produce a fractional spacing ofthe platen less than the distance between two teeth of the line spacing ratchet wheel 7 in order to move the platenso that a character may be writtenabov'e or below a line determined by the teeth of the line spac; ing ratchet wheel 7, and its spring detent. 9. Thus ifthe pawl is turned towards the rear of the machine writing may be produced below the line, whereas if the engaging device or pawl 22 is turned forwardly to effect a slight backward rotation of the platen then I 'an exponent degree mark or other character may be written above the line. I VYhen the laten is moved by what I havetermed the ractional. line spacing mechanism, either backwardly or forwardly against the pressure of the spring detent, it is held by the operator in this position until the character or character s to-appear above or below 'the line are written, when pressure upon the member 22 is released and'the spring detent 910 will restore the platen to its regular printing line position from which'it was moved by the fractionalline spacing device. It will be understood that when the'pawl 22 is contained within the slot 15 and is at either side of the slot 16 it cannot be disengaged from the teeth of the wheel 11 until the platen is restored to its regular printing line position where the pawl 22 will be oppositethe slot 16.
From the foregoingdescription'it will be seen that the pawl or en aging member 22 has two movements in p anes which are at right angles to each other, one bein a rotary movement around the axis of the p aten and the other being a movement around 'its pivot 23in the general direction of the length of the platen.
It will also simple and eflicient device that may be readily applied to difierent styles of typewriting machines and which is operative to properly ove and below a line of writing. Various changes'may be made without departing from, the spirit and scope of my invention.
fWhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
, 1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, line spacing mechanism, and
means for writing above and below a line determined by said linev spacing mechanism, said means comprising a toothed'wheel connected with the platen, and a hand actuated pawl cooperative with said toothed wheel to turn it in. either direction a predetermined extent. v
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination ofa platen, line spacing mechanism, means for writingabove and below a line determined by said line spacing mechanism,
platen with mechanical accuracy said means comprising a toothed wheel connected with the platen, and a hand actuated pawl cooperative. with said toothed wheel to turn it in'either direction a predetermined extent; and means for centering said pawl when it is out of engagement with said toothed wheel.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, line spacing mechanism, and
means forwriting above or below a line de termined bysaid' line spacing mechanism, said means comprising a toothed'wheel connected with the platen, a hand actuated pawl cooperative with said toothed wheel to turn it' a predetermined extent, and adjustable means for determining the extent to which the wheel may be turnedby said pawl.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, line spacing mechanism, and
means for writing above and below a line determined by said line spacing mechanism, said means comprising a toothed wheel connected with the platen, a hand actuated pawl cooperative with said toothed whee to turn it in either direction a predetermined extent,
and adjustable means for determining the.

5. Ina typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, line spacing mechanism,'and means for writing above and below a line determined ,by said line spacing mechanism,
said means comprising a toothed wheel connected with the platen, a carrier pivoted to turn around the axis of the platen a predetermined extent, and a pawl pivoted to said carrier and adapted to be throwninto and out of engagement with said toothed wheel and to turn the carrier, toothed wheel and platen a predeterminedextent in either direotion. ,6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, line spacing mechanism, and
' engaging device pivoted to means for writing above or below a line determined by said line spacing mechanism,
said means comprising a toothed wheelc'on nected with the platen, a carrier pivoted to turn around the axis of the platen a predetermined extent,'a. pawl pivoted to said carrier and adapted to be thrown into and out of engagement with said toothed wheel and to turn the carrier, toothed wheel and platen. a
predetermined extent, and a fixed guide in whichsaid pawl works.
7. In a typewritingmachine, the con1bination of a platen, line spacing mechanism, and means for writing above or belowa line determined by said line spacing mechanism, said means comprising a fixed guide, and an move in said guide in planes at right'angles to each other, the movement of said engaging device in one plane carrying the device into and out of cooperative relation with the laten and the movement of saiddevice in t e other plane causing a rotation of the platen for a predetermined extent.

In a typewriting machine, the coinmbination of a platen, a line spacing ratchet wheel, line spacing means cooperating therewith, a toothed wheel connected with the platen and having the same number of teeth as theline spacing ratchet wheel, and an en gaging device operative to engage the toothed wheel and to 'move the platen through a predetermined extent in either direction.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a line spacing ratchet wheel, line spacing means cooperating therewith, a toothed wheel connected with the number of teeth at right angles to each other, the movement of said device in one plane carrying the device into or out of engagement with said toothed wheel, and the movement of said device in the other plane turning the platen through said toothed wheel a predetermined extent in either direction.
13. In a typewriting machine, the com bination of-a' platen, a line spacing ratchet wheel, line spacing means cooperating therewith, a wheel connected with the platen and having the same number of teeth as the line spacing ratchet wheel, an engaging device pivoted to turn in two planes at right angles to each other, the movement of said device.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; line spacing mechanism comprising a line spacing ratchet wheel, and a cooperative line spacing device; and fractional spacing means independent of the line spacing mechanism for writing above and below a line determined by said line spacing mechanism, said fractional spacing mechanism comprising a toothed wheel connected with the platen, and an engaging device movable by hand in twoplanes, the movement of the engagingdevice in one plane carrying it into and out of engagement with said toothed wheel and, the movement of the engaging device in the other plane turning the platen in either direction a predetermined extent to write above or below the line 7 determined: by the line spacing mechanism.
