SIDE B-EAR-ING FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
needless.
Application led July 5, 1919.l Serial No. 308,827.
To all whom it may concern.'
,Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State oflllinois, have invented a certain new and useful .improvement in Side Bearings for Railway- Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description. reference be to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in side bearings for railway cars.
One of the objects-of my invention is tok provide a simple and efiicient side bearing.
is to provide a gravity centering side bearing of few parts. Further objects will appear from lthe description ofl the invention hereinafter following.
in the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is 'a cross section of the bolsters of a railroad car'showing my imroved side bearing mounted therebetween. ig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken online 2`2 of Fig. 1. `And Fig. 3 is a vertical section part in end view, the section line being shown at 3 3 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l0 indicates' a body bolster'of a railroad car, only the lower portion thereof being shown, and 11 the truck bolster, only the upper portion being shown. rlhe sidebearing consists ofv three'V parts*the base member 12, the roller or anti-friction element 13, and the bearing plate let. The base member is of a general hollowrectangular shape openy at top and bottom and provided with the lugs l5 by means of which it is'secured to the. truck'- bolster 11 by suitable means-'21s, for instance, the rivets 16-16. The end walls 17%17 of the base member are each providedA with a slot 18 for the discharge of dirt and dust. One of the end walls-as, for instance, that shown at the right-'hand in Fig. 1 of a slot 19 for the insertion and withdrawal of the bearing plate 14 in the manner hereinafter described. rihe bottom of the base member is partially closed by the lower plates 119-119 there being provided between them the vertical opening 2O for the insertion of the roller within the base member in the manner hereinafter described. p The roller or anti-friction element consists of a portion of general cylindrical shape referenced 21, each side of which is Specification of Letters Patent.
Y ward withdrawal Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
provided preferably,v at its center with a.
ln assembling the parts, the anti-friction member is passed through the opening 20 in the bottom of the base member until itis in its operative position. The said opening 20 is mostrcstricted between the bottom portions 119 of thebase member, and, as will be observed in Fig. 2 of the drawings, at either side of said bottom portions the base member is open to permit the reception and movement therein of the counter balances 23 hereinafter described. The'grooves 22, as hereinbefore Vmentioned,
permit the passageV of thev roller through theopening 20, which y l is of suitable width therefor. When the roller is in its position within the base memer, the bearing plate 14 is inserted through the opening 19 until it rests upon the bottom portions 119 of the base member, as most clearly shown in Fig. 1 ofthe drawings, and when in its position is secured therein Vby suitable means-as, for instance, the cotter key 2S. The base member is then secured in its position upona car bolster. ln disassembling the parts, the reverse of this operation is followed. On movement of the anti-friction element, whichy will occur on engagement of Vthe upper bolster 10 against the anti-friction element, the same rolls upon the bearing plate 14, and if the
