My invention relates to railroad'rolling in an improvedcar unparticularly adapted for 'use on dump cars of the tilting body type.
In such cars, it is customary for the car body .to be built as a unit and pivotally mounted upon the underframe, the body and the underframe being equipped with hingelike elements and there being mechanism between the body and undcrt'ran'ie whereby the body may be tilted on its hinge ele'me nts. Owing to themovement of the car body,
. the car underframe'should not be very wide operation. The car as it would interfere with the portion of the car body which is lowering in a dumping body structure, being movable on the underframe, cannot add any 1t follows that the underframe must be made of carrying j transmit-ting sufficiently compact and strong to accommodate the above conditions, and the underframe, in addition to having the the superstructure load and the buffing and pulling stresses, must resist transverse stresses not usually required of the car underframe but present incars of this type because of the body tilting mechanism. Such mechanism usually 1 consists of air cylinders with their pistons moving transversely of the underframe, the
"' pistons and cylinders being connected to the ing movement underframe and body so that the admission of air to the cylinder thrusts againstthe car body and underframe and results in tiltof the car body.
The object of my invention is to provide an efticient underframe' adapted to function as required by the above conditions and preferably -'my invention consists in a onepiece steel casting of box-shape cross section throughout a substantial portion of its length and having integral hinges or hinge y mounting elements, integral brackets for the operating mechanism, integral bolsters, and
draft sills, and integral elements for housing or mounting the bufling mechanism I which cushions the impact between the tilting body and the underframe'.
In the accompanying drawings which illustratemy invention- Figure 1 is a top view of my underframe.

The outer ends of the bolster are provided with housing members 5'for.recciving springs 6 or other mechanism for engaging the car body as the latter is lowered into dumping position. Spaced walls 5" extend between housings z'iand reinforce these elements againstthe shocks from the tilting body.

Between the bolsters and preferably staggered with the body mounting elements 8 are suitable brackets 11 and 12. These brackets are adapted to mount the air cylinders, air reservoirs, and mechanism connected therewith tor tilting the car body. The cylinders and mechanism are not illustrated as difl'erent types are now in use and they form no part of my present invention.
One of the operating cylinders or air reservoirs maybe mounted on suitable hangers secured to pads 13 on the side and "top of the'box girder as indicated in Figure (3. Various other modifications of the method of mounting the cylinder on the under-frame may be provided. y
In connection with the laterally extending brackets 12, I desire also to provide a transverse member 14 (Figure 5) which extends beneath the sill so as to brace the brackets on opposite sides of the sill from each other. The thrust on the underframe produced by the operation of one cylinder may be trans mitted not only to the adjacent portion of the unde-rtrame but also to 'the'opposite sill or side of the undert'rame.
In the modification illustrated in Figures 8 to 14 the feature of a one-piece undertrame is retained but the same is shown as adapted to mount a dumping body and in a somewhat different manner from that indicated in the preferred form. In this modification, the longitudinal members of the underframe consists in two I-shaped sills 15 spaced a substantial distance from each other and connected at intervals by suitable transoms 16. Brackets 17 extend outwardly from sills 15 and form hinge butts for mounting the car body. It will be understood that the corresponding hinge elements on the car body on one side of the underframe maybe released to permit the car body to tilt on its hinges on the other side of the undert'rame.
Each hinge element on the underframe preferably consists of an outer cylindrical portion supported from the side sill by spaced ribsQt), both ot which have their inner edges spaced from the web of the side sill 15 and the edge of one of the ribs is cut away a substantially greater distance than the other rib to facilitate molding and casting-of the underframe.
As suggested in connection with my preferred embodiment, I contemplate the use of pads on the ends of the brackets 17 upon ot' a different type.

I claim:
1. A car underframe comprising a onepiece-casting in the form of a box girder forming a center sill and having integral upstanding elements on which a tilting car body may be mounted. w
2. A one-piece casting forming a car underframe longitudinal sill member of box shape cross-section, having upstanding elements on which a tilting car body may be mounted.
3. In a car underframe, a box girder sill "member having integral hinge elements on which a tilting car body may be mounted.
4. A one-piece casting forming a box girder car sill with one or more integral elements extending upwardly from the center thereof to form hinge elements for a tilting body.
5. A one-piece casting forn'iing a box girder car sill, the upper wall of which has portions converging upwardly from' the sides thereof to form elevated car body mounting elements (3. A car undert'rame for a tilting body, comprising a box-shapedgirder with integral brackets thereon tor mounting mechanism tor tilting the car body.
7. In a one-piece casting forming an un dert'rame for a tilting car body, brackets on opposite sides of said underlrame for mounting body tilting cylinders or like mechanism.
8. A one piece casting .forming a boxshaped girder undert'rame adapted to carry a tilting car body and including integral laterally extending brackets for mounting car tilting mechanism.
