To all whom it may concern:
lfie it known that l, Gnonon A. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illin0is,have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Side Bearings for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in side bearings for railway cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple side bearing of the rocker type in which provision is made for the lateral adjustment of the rocker Tn the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a side bearing embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the rocker.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a base member provided with suitable means, as, for instance, the flanges 11--11 and the rivets 12-12 to secure it to the bolster of a car, as, for instance, the truck bolster 13. The base member 10 is provided with an upwardly opening hollow interior 14 in which is mounted the rocker 15. The tread 16 of'the base member is curved laterally as indicated at the numeral 17, the rocker 15 upon its lower face being similarl curved as indicated at the numeral 18. In its under face the rocker is provided with the apertures 1919 adapted for the entrance of the spacing lugs 2020 which are preferably integral with the base member. The rocker is longitudinally prov vided with a perforation 21 adapted to re ceive the pin 22, which is of smaller diameter than the opening 21 and. extends at its ends 2323 into the lateral internal grooves 24-24 longitudinally arranged in the base member 10. The base member is perforated at a point registerin with one of the grooves as indicated by t e numeral 25 to permit the passage of the pin 22 into its position after the rocker has been inserted in the base member. The accidental displacement of said pin through said opening is prevented by suitable means, as, for instance, the cotter 26. On the opposite side of the base member a perforation 27 is pro- I vided to permit the driving out of the pin 22 when desired. The grooves 242i are of a greater height than the diameter of the pin 22.
It will be observed that when the bearing plate upon the opposed bolster, as indicated at 28, engages the rocker angularly, that is, 7
ment of the rocker and at the same time the pin will prevent the accidental displacement of the rocker from its position within the base member. The grooves 2e are sutliciently extended longitudinally to permit the travel of the pin with the rocker in either direction.

In a side bearing for railway cars, in combination: a retaining member; a rocker mounted therein; said retaining member having a curved tread, and the rocker being similarly curved to engage said tread to permit lateral oscillation of the rocker within the base member and about an axis perpendicular to the line of rocking movement.
2. In a side bearing for railway cars, in combination: a retaining member; a rocker mounted therein; a pin extended at its ends from said rocker; the retaining member and rocker having engaging transversely curved bearing surfaces, the retaining member being provided with longitudinal grooves, the ends of the pins extending into said grooves and having both longitudinal and vertical movement therein.
3. In a side bearing for railway cars, in combination: a retaining member; a rocker mounted therein; a pin; a perforation through the rocker to receive said pin; the rocker being laterally oscillatable upon said pin, the retaining member and rocker being provided with engaging curved bearing surfaces.
4. In a side'bearing for railway cars, a retaining member, a rocker mounted therein, a pin extended through the rgcker, the
retaining member and; rocker being provldegl w-ith engaging transversely curved bearmg surfaces, the said base member having longitudinal grooves for receiving the 5 ends of the pin, the pin being loosely received; in said grooves and in said rocker, all to permit the lateral oscillation of the said rocker in reference to the retaining member.
