Thin-coupnngs.
\ No, 136,078, Patmed Feb.18,1a73.
UNITED STATES JOSHUA LOW, OF ASTEUBENVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN THILL'CCUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,078, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA LOW, of Steubenvill'e, in the county of Jefferson and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TliilLOoupling; and do hereby declare that thev following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon makiuga part of this specification.
The nature 'of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a thill-coupling, whereby the shafts will be held in an elevated position without being propped up, as .will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I willnow proceed' to describe its constructionand operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the entire thill-coupling, and Fig.-2l'.shows the various parts of the same detached.
A represents the usual clip having two jaws, between which the thill-iron B is held by a bolt, C. The bolt G is provided on one side with a rib, D, long enough to t in between the jaws of the clip A, one of said jaws having a slot, a, extending upward -from the bolt-hole, and a similar slot, b, is made in the front side of the bolt-hole in the thill-iron B. The inner front edge of the slot a in the clip v is beveled, as shown ata', and thecorrespnding end of the rib D is beveled, as shown at d. The shaft beingraised perpendicular or.
nearly so, .the bolt (.l is inserted through the slotted jaw of the clip and through the thilliron, the end of the bolt entering the other jaw and bearing against a spring, h, attached on the outside thereof. By letting the shaft down it is held in place, the rib D preventing the bolt from coming out. The end of the bolt which bears against the spring li is eccentric or inclined, so that when the shaft is in its natural position the spring will be against the shortest part of the bolt, and hence not exert much pressure; but when the shaft is raised the spring will bear on the eccentric, and hence, the shaft having been raised sufficiently, the spring will move the bolt outward so that the rib D willventer the slot a, and thus hold the shaft in an upright position without the necessity of propping it up. A downward pull on the shaft moves the bolt inward again by means of the inclines a and d. l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y.
The clip A having in one of its jaws the slot @with incline a, and the thil1-iron B with slot b, in combination with the bolt O, having rib D, having incline d and the spring h, all constructed and arranged to operate substantial] y as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of November, 1872.
JOSHUA LOW. Witnesses:
W.J. DOYLE, J osEPH KIRK.
