N. RICHEY.
THILL COUPLING. No; 320,817; Patented June 23,1885;

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NEWTON RIOIIEY, OF ASHLAND, OHIO.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,817, dated June 23, 1885.
Application filed October .25, 1884.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NEWTON RICHEY, of Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thill-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention is an improvement in thillcouplings of that class in which the bolt holding the shaftiron to the socketis held in place by a movable stop, whereby the shaft-iron is held securely against accidental displacement, but is easily removed whenever it is desired to remove the shafts.
The invention consists in details of construc tion hereinafi er described and claimed, the purpose of which is to provide a simple construe tion of easy manufacture, which construction will also furnish a secure hold of the shaftiron and a constant spring'pressure against said iron to prevent rattling.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view ofthc entire coupling. Fig. 2 is a section through the clip-socket and shaftiron and also through the spring-bolt and p ressure-plate. Fig. 3 is a section taken longitudinally through the coupling on the line with the bolt and the pressure-bar.
A clip, A, of ordinary construction, surrounds the aXle. Integral with or connected to this is a socket-piece, B, the sides a a of which extend downwardly forming downwardly-projecting ear or ears I) 1). Upon these sides the eye 0 of the shaft-iron fits snugly. Holes in the sides, adapted to register with holes in the eye 0, admit the bolt (1, the head of which is countersunk into the side. In the lower ends'of the ears I) b are holes made directly opposite each other to receive the pressurebolt 0. One end of this bolt is provided with a head or nut, and upon the other end is a stoparm, 9, the arm being fixed to the bolt. The upper end of this arm is adapted to swing over and close to the outer face of the side I), which is countersunk for the head of the bolt (1.
The upper end of the arm 9 is provided with offsets h, which, when the arm is swung up to cover the head of the bolt d, fits snugly over the upper edge of the side I). This offset is pro vided with a lockingpin, 1, on a reduced shank, and within ahole in the offset is a spring, 2.
The upper end of the shank is provided with (No model.)
a head, 3, and the spring tends to force out the pin 1 into a hole, 4, in the upper edge of the side. This pin holds the plate 9 over the end of the bolt d and prevents it from coming out. In order to remove the bolt, the head 3 is lifted and the spring thus withdrawn, when the plate may be sprung before uncovering the countersunk head of the bolt d.
The pressurebolt e is cut away, as shown at 5, on the side opposite that in which the arm eXtends-that is to say, when the arm covers the bolt and is locked in place the rounded side is uppermost and the flat or out side is underneath.
Between the ears I) I) or lower part of the sides b b is a pressure-plate, H. This plate has front and rear flanges, 6 and 7 which eX tend up the edges of the cars, so that the plate rests upon the pressure-bolt and is held against displacement to front or rear by these flangeextensions, (marked 6.)
A spring, Z, of rubber or equivalent mate rial, is held in the prcssureplate between the flanges and the sides I) b, and a piece against the lower surface of the eye shaftiron.
When it is desired to connectthe shaft to the clip, the arm 9 is thrown down to a vertical dependent position, and the vertical plate rests upon the cut-away portion of the pressure-bolt, being thereby lowered, and with it the spring is also lowered. The eye of the shaft-iron is then introduced and the bolt d inserted. The arm g is then brought up to its place to cover the end of the bolt until the pin is forced into the hole. This turns the pressure-bolt with its rounded side up, raising the plate, and puts the spring under compression.
The bolt is easily made by cutting away air ordinary iron bolt.
The construction of the pressure-plate is such that the spring is held securely, but may be easily removed.
The parts may be all formed cheaply and work securely when in place,
I claim as my invention.
1. In a thill-coupling, in combination with a socket, the eye of the shaftiron, the bolt connecting the eye to the socket and the stoparm which holds the bolt, ,the pressure-bolt fixed to the arm, and cut away on one side, and the pressure-plate and spring, substantially as described.
