Description

UNITED STATES JACOB F. KNORR, ornnw roan, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT I N HARNESS-MOUNTINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,073, dated February 18, 1873.
Toall whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB F. KNORR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harness-Mountings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming'part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a sectional side view of a terret constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3 is avertical section of a modification thereof. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 5 is a sectional side view of a pad-hook constructed according to my invention. Fig. 6 is a vertical sec tion of a modification thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a terret, padhook, or other article of a similar nature, made of a bar of wrought or malleable iron, of semicylindrical cross-section, the ends of said bar being bent and laid close together, so
as to form a cylindrical stem which, when furnished with a proper screw-thread, can, be
inserted into the nut provided for the purpose of attaching the terret or other device to the pad, saddfe, or other part of a harness. With the terret, pad-hook, or other article constructed as above stated, is also combined a base, which slips on the stem, and which is provided with concave flanges to embrace a portion of the body of the terret or other'article, for the purpose of retaining the same firmlyin position. Instead of using a bar of iron of a semi-cylindrical crosssection for the construction of my terret, padhook, or other article, I also use a bar with a depression in its outer surface, said depression serving to receive an additional bar of another material, whereby I am enabled to produce a highly ornamental article.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a terret, which is constructed of a semi-cylindrical bar of wrought or malleable iron. This bar is bent to form the ring a, and its ends are brought. close together, so that the same form the cylindrical stem, b. This stem is provided with a screw-thread to fit the nut c that serves to secure the terret to the harness pad or saddle.
With the terret constructed as described, I combine a base, B, which slips on the stem 11, and'which is provided with concave flanges 01, made to fit and to embrace the lower portion of the ring a. As the nut c is tightened up the terret is drawn down into the base and a firm durable support for said terret 1s obtained. It is obvious that the base B can be ornamented in any desirable manner to suit .a filling-piece, f, of :any desired material,
whereby I am enabled to impart to my terret an ornamental and distinguished appearance. For instance, the body of the terret can be silverplated and the fillingpiece can be plated: with gold, or vice-versa; or, if desired,
' the filling-piece can be made of leather or any desirable material.
It is'obvious that "my invention is applicable to pad-hooks, fly-hooks, or other articles of a similar nature; and in Fig. 5 I have shown a pad-hook made of a semi-cylindrical rod; and in Fig. 6 another pad-hook is shown. which is made of a grooved rod with a fillingpiece.
' What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A terret, pad-hook, or other article of a similar nature, made of a semi-cylindrical bar of iron, bent to form a ring, a, and a stem, 12, substantially as shown and described.
2. A. terret, pad-hook, or other article of a similar nature, made of a grooved bar of iron, bent to .form a ring, a, and a stem, I), and provided with a filling-piece, f, of any desirable material, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of a base, B, having concave flanges d with a terret, pad-hook, or other article of a similar nature, made of a semi-cylindrical or grooved bar of iron, substantially as set forth.
JACOB F. KNORR.
