G. O. BE ALS.
HOOK. No. 380,974. Patented Apr. 10. 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE O. BEALS, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 380,974, dated April 10, 1888.
Application filed February 24, 1888. Serial No. 265,181. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE G. BEALS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of hooks suitable for holding clothes, hats, 850., which are made from a single piece of wire; and it consists of a certain improved construction, which I will now proceed to definitely describe and claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved hook complete, and Fig. 2 is a section taken in the line 00 x of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that my improved hook is composed of a single piece of wire, of which a is the free end or shank, which is formed into a screw forinsertion into the Wall. A portion of the wire beyond this screw a is doubled upon itself, and the lower portion, 1), bent upwardly in a curve to form a hook, the intermediate or upright portion, a, beingtwisted, as shown. Thesingle wire after it leaves the twist 0 is bent in aline with the screw a, as at d, and doubled over upon itself, its outer doubled end being curved upwardly to form the hook d. At or near the center of the horizontal portion d the outer end of the wire is bent downwardly at an an gle, as ate, its end being passed in between one of the loops of the twist, preferably the lower one, in order to obtain a more extended bearing for the portion e,whieh serves the function of a brace. For the purpose of stability and to guard against accidental displacement the end 6 of the brace e is notched, as at e the wire of the loop in the twisted portion a being pressed into engagement with the notches, as shown in Fig. 2, thus securely holding the lower end of the brace.
I am aware of the existence of a hook made of a single piece of twisted and bent wire, but without any brace; also of a double hook made of a single piece of wire and having a yielding extension or support at the back; but the subject-matter of my invention involves in contrast a hook partially twisted in order to secure a socket for the end of the brace, and also dispensing with the yielding extension or support.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hook for clothes, 820., made from a single piece of wire, having the screw portion a, the double hooks d and Z1,the twisted upright portion 0, and the brace e, having its lower end engaged in a loop of the twisted portion 0, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereoflhave signed. my name to this specification in the presence of two suhscribing witnesses.
GEORGE O. BEALS.
