SAMUEL w. an, or COLUMBUS, c1110.,
, SPOT-LIGHT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. HYA'I'I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spot-Lights; and I do declare the following to be a full, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the. same.
This invention relates to an improved spotlight, and one object of the inventionis to provide an improved mounting for the spotlight so that the spotlight may be turned in the desired direction and may at the same time be firmly held in place.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this spotlight that the stem thereof may serve as means for tightening a clamp about a pivot pin carried by a bracket and not only serve to clamp the bracket about the pivot pin but also serve as means to prevent movement of the bracket longitudinally upon the pivot pin. Another object of the invention is to so construct this mounting for the spotlight that the spotlight may be readily moved to direct its light in the desired direction.
' Another object of the invention is to so construct this spotlight that it will be very simple in construction, strong and durable and easy to operate.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, whereini Figure 1 is a view showing the spotlight in elevation,
Fig. 2 is a view showing the structure of Fig. 1, partially in top' plan and partially in section,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view showing the spotlight and clamp carried thereby in side elevation and mounted upon the pivot stem of the bracket, I
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the stem and engaging clamp in section,
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the clamp, and
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the windshield engaging bracket. This spotlight and mounting includes a bracket 1 which is curved throughout its length as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 6 and has its inner end provided with a transversely or vertically extending head bar 2 from which extends arms 3. These arms 3 have their free end portions shaped as shown Specification of Letters latent. Patented N 30, 1920,. Application filed July 1, 1920. Serial No. 393,235.
in Fig. 2 to provide'jaw elements 4 which cooperate with the jaw elements 5 of the U- shaped clamping element 6. This clamp 6 is provided with openingsin its side arms to receive the bolts 7 which extend throughthe arms 3 of the clamping element 2, securing nuts8 being provided upon these bolts 7 so that the-clampingelements 2 and 6 may be retained in the proper spaced :relation according to the diameter of: the windshield side bar 9 positioned between the jaws 4 and 5'. The clamping element-6,:in'addition to the unthreaded openings which receive the bolts 7, is provided witha threaded opening which receives the adjusting screw-.10. This 10 engages the cross head adjusting screw of the clamping element 2 and therefore whenthe device is put in place, the bolts 8 may be adjusted: to space theclamping element apart the desired amount and the ad justing screw-10 thenturned to swing the clamping element 6 uponthe bolts 7 which will act as pivot pins and ,thuscause the side bar 9 of the windshield to be firmly clamped. From an inspection of Fig. 2, it will be seen that the clamping elements are so con structed that they may engage a side bar which is round in cross section, or rectangular.
' The spotlight which is indicated in genera-1 by the numeral 11 is provided with a stem 12 having an abutment collar 13 intermediate its length and having its free end ,portion threaded, thus; providing a threaded stem. .The free end portion of the bracket 1 is circular in cross section to provide a pivot pin- 15 having an abutment collar 14 at its inner end and intermediate its length, cut to provide an annular groove 15'. v This groove 15' is so positioned that when the threaded stem of the spotlight 11 is passedthrough the eyes 16 of the clamp 17 the threaded stem will extend through the groove 15 as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. This clamp 17 is mounted upon the pivot pin of the bracket 1, and while it may have rotary movement upon this pin, it cannot have movement longitudinally thereon due to the fact that the threaded stem extends through the groove of the pin. This stem cai'ries a securing nut 18 which serves to move the eyes 16 of the clamp 17 toward each other and thus tighten the clamp about the stem. It will thus be seen that the stem of the spotlight serves not only as means for pivotally mounting this spotlight for hori- -zontal swinging movement, but alsoserves as means for securing the clamp about the pivot pin 15 upon which the'clamp turns to mount the spotlight for vertical swinging,
intermediate its length to provide an annular groove, a clamping sleeve positioned upon the pivot pin and split longitudinally and having outstanding eyes receiving the stem of the spotlight with the stem extending into the annular groove of the pin, and a securing nut screwed upon the lower end portion of the stem to move the eyes toward each other and tighten the sleeve about the pivot pin.
2. A spotlight having a stem provided intermediate its length with a collar and having its free end portion threaded, a bracket having its free end portion cut to provide a stem having an annular groove intermediate its length, a collar at the inner end of the stem of said bracket, and a clamp carried by the stem of the bracket andhaving engagement with the stem of the spotlight whereby the stem of the spotlight may serve as means for drawing the clamp into operative engagement with the stem of the bracket, the spotlight stem extending through the groove of the bracket stem to hold the clamp against movement longitudinally upon the bracket stem. a
3. A spotlight having a stem extending therefrom, a bracket having its free end portion forming a stem provided with an annu- 4. A spotlight, a bracket having a stemextension provided with an annular groove, a clamp fitting upon the stem extension of said bracket, and a pivot stem for the spotlight constituting means for drawing the clamp into binding engagement with the a bracket stem and fitting into the groove of the bracket stem tohold theclamp against movement longitudinally of the bracket stem.
5. A spotlight having a stem extension, a bracket having a stem extension positioned at right angles to the stem extension of said spotlight and provided with an annular groove, a clamp fitting upon the stem extension of the bracket and having engagement with the stem extension of the spotlight, se-
curing means carried by the spotlight stem extension and engaging the clamp to draw the same into binding engagement with the bracket stem extension, the stem extension of the spotlight fitting into the groove of the stem extension of the bracket to hold the clamp against movement longitudinally of the bracket stem, clamping arms at the inner end of the bracket, a clamp for cooperating with the clamping arms of the bracket, securing bolts releasably and pivotally connectingthe clamp with the clamping arms, and an adjustin screw for moving the clamp upon the b0 ts mounting the same.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
