pointed out in the appended claim.
' In the accompanylng drawings, Figures 1 My invention relates to suspenders and has for its ob ect to provide an arrangement 111 wlnch the supporting members are of permanent length and in which the necessary adjustment is obtained by means of a plurality of fastening devices such as buttonholes. My invention contemplates further a construction in which the supporting membersand the relative positions of the buttonholes or equivalent devices thereon are arranged so that the trousers will not be distorted or folded at the waist line. A further object of my invention is to avoid the use of metallic elements of any kind and to make the suspenders of a material which is washable and capable of bemg laundrred;
llly invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty will be and 2 show two specific embodiments ofmy invention for illustrative and. descriptive purposes.
As shown in the drawings the suspenders comprise the members 5 continued at the back in the form of rear supporting me1nhers or tabs 6, the latter being formed by crossing and connecting the members 5 at the proper point or in any other suitable manner. At the front the members 5 are each combined with a pair of front supporting members or tabs, those in the form shown in Fig. land indicated as 7 and 8 diverging from points on the members 5 which come close to the shoulders when the suspenders are worn while the members or tabs shown in Fig. 2 and designated as 9 and 10 diverge from points near the waist line of the wearer. The diverging front members or tabs, 7, 8 and 9, 10 may comprise integral continuations of the members 5 or may be otherwise combined therewith.
The entire suspenders in either form are constructed of washable materials, such as cotton, linen, silk or other fabrics commonly termed non-elastic or a combination of such Specification of Letters Patent.
of which the following is a specifi- Patented Nov. 30, 1920.

materials. In the preferred construction a plurality of layers of material are combined and sewed together with multiple rows of stitches to impart a maximum strength to the suspenders and to least reduce it to a mmimum; single ply tapeof suitable thickness has been found to also provide a satisfactory construction. In whatever form the suspenders are constructed, the various members and tabs constituting the device have permanent fixed lengths which do not change to any material extent, the dimensions being such as to adapt the suspenders to the widest range of use.
In order to provide foran adjustment of the suspenders to meet the requirements or desires of different individuals, at least some of the tabs vided with a plurality of fastening devices such as, for instance, buttonholes. tratcd examples show the front tabs 7, 8 and 9, 10 each provided with a series of buttonholes 11 and 12 located in spaced relation to each other on said tabs, the buttonholes 11 being formed in the tabs .7 and 9 while the buttonholes 12 are in the tabs 8 and 10. In
obviate stretch or at.
or all of them if desired are pr0- The illusthe preferred construction the buttonholes 11 are offset with respect to the buttonholes 12 in directions lengthwise of the tabs, or in other words are located at points somewhat higher than the location of said buttonholes arrangement when the suspenders are being worn, the cooperative engagement of the buttonholes 11 and 12 with the buttons on the trousers is such that the tabs 7 8 and 9, 10 are all and each of them under the propertensionand performing their share of the work in properly sustaining the trousers in position.
In other words the suspender has an inher and outer section on both the right and left side; the inner sections, comprising the tabs 10 hang approximately straight from the shoulder, when the suspender is worn, while the outer sections, comprising the tabs 11, when fastened to the trouser button are pulled somewhat to the side in a direction corresponding to the direction of the waist 12, the location being computed with respect to the waist line of the trousers. With this '11 and 12 arranged in transverse registry the supporting strain would be transmitted entirely to the tabs 8' and 10, the tabs 7 and 9 in such case being slack and performing no supporting function. It will be understood that the tabs 7 and 9 may be made somewhat shorter than the tabs 8 and 10 or that the tabs of each pair may be of the same length.
o By connecting the proper buttonholes of the front tabs with the buttons on the trousersany desired adjustment within the range of, the suspenders may be secured and the trousers may be readily raised and lowered as desired. In some'cases the rear tabs may be provided with a plurality of buttonholes,
inwhich case the front tabs may each have asingle buttonhole or a series as desired. Nevertheless the buttonhole of the outer section will have to be higher than the one on the inner section. lVith present day trousers, at least in the majority of cases, the
' buttons are on the inside of the waist band so that'any depending portions of the front or rear tabs may be tucked within the trousers so as to be invlslble.
, Tov make it certain that the suspenders are front. tabs 7,
properly put on and to secure the desired cooperation between the proper buttonholes 11 and 12 with the proper trouser buttons or, in other words, to properly position the V 8 or 9, 10, and to facilitate the placing and adjustment of the inner and outer sections, I prefer to place an indicating mark. or other suitable device 13 upon the suspenders preferably at the rear where the members 5 cross; the device 13 maybe locate d. upon either the inside or outside surface of. the suspenders and in either case will readily indicate the proper way in which thesuspenders are to bevworn to secure the desiredresults.
improved suspenders absolutely avoid the use of any metallic elements, are fixed and positive in adjustment and action and do not yield or stretch to any appreciable extent; the suspenders are economical to manufactureand may easily be maintained in asanitary and clean condition by washing and laundrying.
V The strains are equally distributed upon the wearer and in the form shown in Fig. 1 are transmitted entirely to the shoulders because of the arrangement of the tabs 7 and 8, this form also avoiding a distortion or folding of the trousers along the waist line and particularly between the buttons to which each pair of tabs 7, 8 are attached. The offset arrangement of the buttonholes of each pair of tabs, in addition to its other advantages, evenly distributes the strains over the trousers and keeps it absolutely straight about the waist of the wearer, instead of pulling it up at one point and permitting it to sag at another, as is very often the case in existing constructions. Once the wearer decides on the proper adjustment for a given pair of trousers the same result may be obtained repeatedly and without change by simply always connecting the same buttonholes with the trouser buttons.
Various changes in the specific constructions shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim A suspender of the kind described, comprising continuous members of substantially non-elastic fabric terminating at one end in front tabs comprising integral portions of said continuous members, the latter being crossed at the back and permanently connected together to form rear tabs coinprisim integral continuations of said members, said rear tabs being each provided with at least one buttonhole, and continuous members of substantially non-elastic fabric permanently secured by stitching to the said first continuous members and diverging therefrom at points located in the neighborhood of the shoulders when the suspenders are worn, to form additional front tabs complementary to the front tabs first mentioned, said front tabs each being provided with a plurality of button holes, the button holes of one tab of each pair being elf-set in the direction of the length of said tabs with respect to the button holes of the other tabs of said pair.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
