Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD D. BnoNsoN, or AMSTERDAM, NEwYoRK.
IMPROVEMENT IN escom-BAGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,026, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
lBe it known that I, EDWARD D. BEorisoN,
of Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Broom-Bags 5 and I'do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exactdescription of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part ofl this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The figure of the drawing is a representation of a perspective view of my invention.
This invention has relation to covers for broom-heads; and consists in the hereinafterdescribed novelconstruction of a paper bag having an open bottom, by means of which it 'may be pnt over the broom-head without ruf-` head previously compressed by machinery or otherwise inserted through the mouth. This method of covering brooms is, however, te-A dious, and tends to rufile up and injure the broom-cover.
My improved cover, being an open-bottom bag orcase, may be put down over the broomhandle, and tted to the head without injuring the latter in the least, and in about onefourth the time required in covering brooms according to the old method.
' the same.
In the accompanying drawing, A designates a paper bag or case having four sides and corners, and made either seamless or from a sheet of paper pasted at the edges. The bottom part of the bag is open, so that it may be pnt over the broom-handle, and thence on the broomhead, and is provided With four wings, a b, produced by cutting the paper upward at the corners. After the bag is put on the broom the wings-a are first turned over one upon the other, and the wings b then bent in and fastened together by hook and eye or other equivaient fastening so as to close the bottom of the bag. Finally, the bag is secured to the broom by passing a cord around its neck and tying The wings b are thickened, and made strong to receive the hook and eye c d by folding over the edges and ends, as shown. To prevent the paper from tearing while being applied to the broom, strips of cloth e are pasted over the corners, in the manner indicated in the drawing.
What I claim as my invention is The broom-head cover, consistin g of the paper bag A having an open bottom, with wings a b folded over and secured by means of hooks and eyes, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD D. BRGNSON.
