G, F. GUNDLACH.
TOBACCO PIPE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 12. 1920.

GEORGE F; GUNIJLACH, OF YORK, N. Y.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1920.
Application filed February 12, 1920. Serial No. 358,233.
To all to hom it may concern.
Be it known that I GEORGE F. GuNnLA H, a citizen of the United States, residlng at .1412 Franklin Avenue, New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings forming apart of the same. i v 4 This invention relates to a devlce applied to the bottom of a pipe-bowl to prevent the nicotin from passing into the bore of the pipe-stem and to facilitate the loosenlng up of the tobacco in the bottom of the bowl when required.
In this invention the bottom of the pipe bowl is formed with a chamber larger than the bowl with a shoulder between the two. A removable plate is fitted to the said shoulder and clamped against the same by a plug fitted snugly into the chamber, and speclal means are provided for preventing the access of tobacco dust or nicotin from the bowl to the pipe-stem.
The construction will be understood by reference to the annexed drawing, in wh ch Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a plpe provided with the improvement; Flg. 2 is a perspective view of the plug from the bottom of the bowl; Fig. 3 is a plan of the bowl; Fig. 4 is a plan of the removable plate at the bottom of the bowl; and Fig. 5 is a cylindrical strainer to fit below such plate. Fig. 6 shows the edge ofithe plate d.
a, designates the bowl of the pipe in which the tobacco is placed with a chamber 7) at the bottom forming an annular shoulder a to which a plate d is removably fitted and perforated with a hole d in the center.
The plate is held snugly against the shoulder by a plug 0 fitted to press into the chamber b and having a recess or pocket f upon its upper side to catch the tobacco dust, ashes and nicotin which pass through the hole in the plate (Z.
A groove h is formed around the periphery of the plug at the side of the recess f, and holes 6 are extended from the groove in o the recess.
The pipe-stem g has its bore h extended into connection with the groove it so that when smoking the pipe the smoke is drawn through the hole I), the holes 0 and the groove 72,. I
An annular screen i is inserted in a shallow socket f in the recess 7 between the plate d and the bottom of the recess, thus encircling the hole I) and screening out from the tobacco smoke any dust or ashes which passes throu h the hole and which might foul the bore The socket 7 holds the screen central in the recess.
To loosen up the tobacco when it has settled in the bowl a, a spring-pin m is inserted through the plug and the screeni in line with the hole I).
A spring j holds the pin normally in the recess, but when the tobacco requires loosening the pin is pressed upward by its headpiece n, forcing it through thehole 'b and pushing away the tobacco over said hole, as indicated by the lines at.
When it is desired to clean .out the recess from the smoke, and the parts can allbe" readily separated for cleansing.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention what is claimed herein is:
1. A tobacco pipe having a chamber at the bottom larger than the bowl with shoulder between the two, aremovable plate per- I forated in the center and fitted to such shoulder, a removable bottom plug fitted to such chamber and clamping the plate against the said shoulder, and'having a depressed central recess, a strainer fitted to the recess around. the hole in the. plate, a spring-pin movable at pleasure through the plug and the hole in the plate to loosen the tobacco in he bowl and a connection from the pipe-stem to the said recess, the whole arranged and operated substantially as set forth. 7 I
2. A- tobacco pipe having a chamber at the bottom larger than the boWl With shoulder between the two, a removable plate perforated in the center and fitted to such shoul- 5 der, a removable bottom plug fitted to such chamber and clamping the plate against the said shoulder, the plug having a groove around its periphery communicating With the bore of the pipe-stem and holes extended from the groove into the recess of the plug, 10 substantially. as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand. I V
GEORGE F. GUNDLACH.
