. Be it known that I, CHARLES H. NowAoK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Can-Open- :ing Devices, of which the following is a specificat on.
This invention relates in general to can opening devices and has more particular reference to devices of this character pro vided upon the bodies of cans having tight, friction. slip covers, a'blacking box being an example of this character of can.
(An object of the invention is the provision of a readily operable, simply constructed, opening device which will have a single moving part and be of certain and positive operation.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a top plan View of a can provided with an opener embodying my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the cover in its ordinary closed position;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the opening device in the actof raising the cover;
Fig. 4 is a section taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the open ing device alone; and
Fig. 6 is a similar view of the blank from whi h the opening device is formed.
The can shown on the drawing for the purpose of illustrating my invention consists .of a body 11 and a tight slip cover 12, the body 11 being beaded at 13 to limit the inward movement of the cover in closing. The upper edge 14 of the body is curled inwardly to stiffen the structure and render more rigid the engagement of the cover with the body when the box or can is first filled 50 with material and placed in commercial use. The bead 14 is interrupted at 15 at one side of the can and a spherical part 16, having its center in the plane of the head, is provided. The opening device is secured upon this spherical portion and comprises a central spherical part 17 having outwardly extending wings 18, which, as will presently be described, constitute finger grips and pr vide for the lifting of the cover.

This blank is curved centrally at 17 to its spherical formation and the two wlngs 18 each consist of a central part 19 of substantially rectangular shape and edge or sideparts 21 extending outwardly from the s de edges of the part 19. The blank is bent to set off the part 19. The two wings are laid over on the bent lines 22 u on the central part 17 so that their outer edges 23 are brought toward each other.

Thereafter the side parts 21 of the wings are bent upwardly into close proximity, as indicated in the drawing, to form outwardly extending finger grips. The side parts of the wings are extended back at 28 in the blank to cause the over-all length of the finger pieces to be greater than the diameter of the body of the opening device, thus providing greater leverage and conseouentlv more easy operation of the opening device in use.
The whole device may consist of a single part of sheet metal bent as ind cated. The folds 31 in Fig. 1 provide shoulders for engaging the lower edge of the cover to raise the same, when the opening dev ce is turned, and the two finger-piece parts 18 are each secured at two points, viz: at the folds 31 and at the pivot 27, giving a particularly rigid 7 construction well adapted to withstand the construction of the device Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore disclosed being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:

A can having a slip cover and a'rotatable opener secured thereto beneath :said cover, said opener being adapted to engage tlie edge of the cover upon rotation and having wings extending upwardly and invwardly over its body to provide a,;finger grip and secured at'their edges to the center ofsaid body.
2. A can-having a slip cover and a:.r0tatable opener secured to ther body belowthe edge of sand cover, said opener'having end Wings laid back upon the body of said opener With their edges adjacent the side edges of said Wings beingbent upwardly side by side toforrn a finger grip.
