GEORGE LEWIS GILBERTI-IORPE, 0F SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA, ASSIGNOR TO RICHARD CYRIL PHILLIPS, OF SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA.
LATCHING DEVICE FOR CASEMENT-WINDOWS, DOORS, AND GATES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 19 20.
Application filed February 10, 1920. Serial No. 357,622.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE Lnwis GIL- BERTHORIE, a subject of the Kin of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Fydney, in the State of New South Wales, Common wealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latching Devices for Casement-WVindows, Doors, Gates, or the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a catch suitable for casement windows, doors, and the like which are not hinged flush with the surrounding frame, thus necessitating that the catch members should be positioned at right angles to each other.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple cheaply constructed self-acting latching device which is positive in action and easily manipulated to release.
A further object of the invention is to provide a latching device the members of which can be readily stamped out of sheet metal of uniform thickness. The invention comprises two members one of which. may be termed the bolt and the other the latch, the former is attached to the easement or door, and the latter to the inner face of frame.
The bolt member consists of a plate adapted to be attached to the easement or door and having at one end an elongation or knob to form a handle to operate the casement or door, and at the other end a right angular projecting finger having one edge curved and the other notched.
The latch member consists of a base plate adapted to be screwed to the window or door frame and having a swinging counter balanced hook pivotally attached thereto.
But in order that theinvention may be clearly understood reference will now be made to the drawings which accompany and form part of this complete specification and in which V Figure 1 is a perspective view of a casement window showing the improved latching device in position.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of window and frame showing latching device.
Fig. 3 is a section through line a b Fig. 2.
Fig. 4; is an enlarged elevation of bolt member in position on window.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged elevation of latch member in position on window frame.
Fig. 6 is a sectional plan of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a sectional plan of Fig. 5.
The bolt member A consists of a metal plate 8 adapted to be secured to the window 9 by screws 10.
The plate 8 is elongated at one end to form a handle 11 the function of which is to operate the swinging window or door, it is therefore obvious that the handle 11 may be shaped or bent to any form best suited to carry out this function under varying conditions. At the other end of the plate 8 is a finger 12 projecting at right angles to the plate and notched on one edge to form a horizontal hook 18. The member A may be stamped in one piece out of sheet metal of suitable thickness.
The latch member B consists of a base plate 14 adapted to be screwed to the inner face of window frame 15 by screws 16. Pivotally attached at 17 to the base plate 14 is a vertical latch or hook 18 with depending shank 19 which acts as a balance weight to retain the latch in the normal position.
20 is a projection on shank 19 provided as a thumb piece to release the latch after engagement.
The screws 16 have projecting heads which act as stops to limit the movement of the latch 18.
In operation-when the window or door is swung or pushed into the closed position the projecting finger 12 of bolt member A comes into contact with edge of hook 18 on latch member B and the two members engage. The latch is released by pushing the projection 20 on arm 19 which raises the hook 18 clear of engagement with the hook 13.
The latching device may be used on the inside of a cupboard, or on a casement window provided with a permanent fly screen, in which case the latch is released by a light rod aflixed to the projection 20 and passing through the door or screen frame.
I claim ment Windows and the like comprising a tially as and for the purpose herein set bolt member adapted to be secured to the out. '10 Window, consisting of a plate, a horizontally In testimony whereof I have aflixed my projecting notched finger, and an operating signature in presence of two Witnesses.
handle; and a latch member adapted to be EO G LEWIS GILBERTHORPE. secured to the Window frame consisting of a Witnesses vertical oscillating counterweighted hook, T. C. ALLEN,
on base plate provided With stops substan- W. ALLEN.
