GRAVITY-LOCK.
Application filed December 27, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LGoTTLIEB YUNKER, a naturalized citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Gravity-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gravity locks for windows; and particularly to alock adapted to be used in connection with fire-proof windows of the swinging sash type, adapted to automatically close and lock when exposed to a temperature of sufficient intensity.
It has for its object a device which will lock the sash at the top, does not project to any appreciable extent perpendicularly to the sash, and which is capable of a gravity adjustment. I attain these objects in the lock illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the window, partly in section and showing the sash in closed and open osition, the latter position being shown in otted lines. Figs. 2 and 3 are partial front elevations on an enlarged scale, showing the sash in locked and unlocked osition. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the 100 on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 is a view on an enlarged scale of the socket plates with sash removed.
Similar characters of reference designate correspondingparts throughout the several views.
Referrin to the drawings, 10 designates a sheet meta frame of the usual construction and to which is fitted a sheet metal sash 11, provided with wired glass window panes 12. This sash is pivoted to the frame in such a manner as to be gravity closing, and when held open will automatically return to closed position if released.
13 and 14 are socket plates, the plate 13 being secured to the lintel of frame 10 as shown; and the striking plate 14 to the plate 13, said late 14 being slotted and thereby adjustable with respect to the other by means of the adjusting screws 15.
Respective openings 16 and 17 adapted to register with each other, are provided in said plates; and by adjusting the plate 14 with respect to plate 13, the combined opening may be correspondingly varied. An opening 18 is also cut in the lintel of the frame 10, and registers with the said combined open- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing so as to permit a latch bolt 19 to pass through. This latch bolt passes through and is guided in a lock casing 20, being provided with an upper and a lower lug21 and 2 adapted to act against the up er and lower wall of said casing, and there y limit the vertical movement of said latch bolt. The lower end of this latch bolt extends beyond the casing 20, and is provided with a projecting hook 23 and aneye 24. To the eye 24 is secured a chain 25 provided with the usual fusible connection (not shown) and adapted to be secured to some holding means as a hook 26 to hold the window sash 11 open. To the casing 20 is secured an arm 27 pivotally supporting a lever 28, the inner arm of which is arranged to en a e the hook 23, while the outer arm is provided with an adjustable weight 29 whose position is fixed with respect to said lever by means of the thumb-screw 30.
When the sash is closed, the weight 29 through the action of the inner arm of the lever 28 against the hook 23 causes the latch bolt to be forced u into and through the openings 16, 17, MM 18 to lock said sash 11.
to its frame 10. In order to 0 en the window, the chain 25 attached to t e latch bolt 18 is pulled downwardly in opposition to the action of the weight 29. This causes the hook 23 to act against the inner arm of lever 28 thereby releasing the latch bolt from the socket plates 13 and 14., permitting the window sash to be swung inwardly to 0 en the window. The chain is then fastene to the chain hook 26 and will automatically part at a fusible connection should heat of sufficient intensity reach this point, causing the sash to close; and through the action of the weight 29 and lever 28, to lock the window at the top.
My improved lock may be readily applied to window sashes does not project in an unsightly manner in a direction perpendicular to said sash; and by means of the adjustable weight, one uniform size of lock is applicable to various sizes and weights of window sashes.
I cl aim:
1. In a window of the swinging sash type: a gravity lock for said window comprising, a lock casing secured to the sash of said window; a latch bolt guided therein; means in connection with the frame of said window, adapted to receive said latch bolt to lock said window sash; and a lever provided with an cause said latch bolt to project beyond its said casing.
2. In windows of the swinging sash type: a gravity lock forsaid window comprising, a lock casing secured to the sash of said window; a latch bolt guided therein and provided with an upper and a lower lug, ada ted to act against the walls of said casing to imit the extent of vertical movement of said latch bolt; a hook integral with said latch bolt and outside of said casing; a lever pivotally connected to said casing, its inner arm being adapted to en age said hook and its outer arm provide weight; and an eye at the lower end of said latch bolt.
Signed at Newark, in thecounty of Essex and State of New Jersey this 10th day of December A. D; 1907.
