T 0 al whom it may concern Be it. known that I, ALEXANDER GRAM- MOND, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at South Shields, in the county of Durham, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scale-Removing Tools, of which the following is a specification.
lhis invention relates to tools for removing scale from the external surfaces of cylindrical members such as boiler stays and boiler tubes, and has for its object to provide an improved tool for this purpose.
A scale-removing tool according to the present invention comprises two levers pivoted together scissors-fashion, each lever carrying a cutter, one of said levers having a threaded aperture engaged by a threaded member pivotally attached to an operating rod and the other lever having a slot loosely engaging said member and adapted to coact with a stop thereon so that rotation in one direction of the operating rod draws the levers together to clamp the cutters onto the member to be scaled while rotationof' the operating rod in the other directlon moves said levers apart to release them from said member and reciprocation of said operating rod rocks the cutters about the member to remove the scale. The cutters are provided with cutting edges running lengthwise and with end teeth, and means are also provided for applying endwise pressure to said cutters.
My invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is an elevation of one construction of my improved scale-removing tool;
Fig. 2 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 1 of the operating rod and threaded member;
Fig. 3 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 1 of the cutters and levers;
Fig. 4 is an elevation of one construction of means for applying endwise pressure to the cutters; and
Fig. 5 is a plan thereof as applied to a boiler stay.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings, the tool therein illustrated comprises two levers 10, 11 pivoted together scissors-fashion at 12. Each lever is provided with cutters 13 which are shaped as shown to partially embrace the member 14 to be cleaned and are formed in one with slotted blocks 15 which are adjustably mounted on the levers 1O, 11 and adapted to be clamped thereto by set screws 16. The cutters 13 are provided with cutting edges 17 running lengthwise and with teeth 18 at one end.
The shorter arm 19 of the lever 10 is provided with a threaded aperture 20 adapted to engage a threaded member 21 pivotally lever 10 is an eye 29 to which is attached a guide rope 30 to facilitate the placing of the tool in position.
In use, the scaling tool is lowered down into the boiler by the operating rod 23, and the levers 10, 11 are guided by the rope 30 until the cutters 13 pass over the member to be cleaned, the levers 10, 11 having been previously opened to allow of this. The levers 10 11 are then closed together to cause the cutters to grip said member as shown in Fig. 1, by rotating the operating rod 23 on its axis, and the rod is then raised and lowered and moved laterally to cause the cutting edges 17 of the cutters to scrape off the scale.
In Figs. {1 and 5 of the accompanying drawings is illustrated a saddle 31 pivot ally mounted on an arm 32 fixed on the lower end of a rod 33 so that said saddle can be slidden along the member to be cleaned by turning the rod 33 about its axis.
In Fig. 5 the member to be cleaned is repre-' sented by a stay 34 between the end plate 35 of the boiler and the combustion chamber plate 36. The saddle 31 is intended for use when it is desired to remove scale (indicated at 37 in Fig. 5) from around the stay near the combustion chamber plate 36. The

The improved scale-removingtool of the present invention is both engaged with the member to be scaled and operated by means of the operating rod 23' assisted, if necessary, by the guide rope 30, and can therefore be readily used in confined spaces such, for example, as the space between the combustion chamber and the end wall of a marine boiler.

A scale-removing tool comprising two levers disposed in intersecting relation to each other, a pivot pin passing through said levers at the intersection, coacting cutters on the adjacent ends of the levers on one side of said pivot pin and means for open ing and closing said levers and their cutters to grip and release the member to be scaled and for rocking them about said member to remove the scale, said means comprising an operating rod, a threaded member pivotally attached thereto, one of said levers having a threaded aperture in its end on the side of said pivot pin opposite from said cutters, said threaded aperture engaging said threaded member, and the other lever having a slot in its adjacent end loosely engaging said threaded member and coacting with a stop thereon, 1
angles to said cutting edges, and means for opening and closing said levers and their cutters to grip and release the member to be scaled and for rocking them about said member to remove the scale, said means comprising an operating rod, a threaded member pivotally attached thereto, one of said levers having a threaded aperture in the end thereof on the side of said pivot pin .opposite from said cutters, saidthreaded aperture engaging said threaded member, the other lever having a slot in its adjacent end loosely engaging said threaded member and coacting with a stop thereon, a rod, an arm fixed on the lower end thereof, and a saddle pivotally mounted on said arm whereby endwise pressure can be applied to said cutters.
