FRANK L. HARKER, 0F BUTLER, LOUISIANA, ASSIG-NOR 0F ONE-HALF TO JOHN W. RAMSEY, OF BUTLER, LOUISIANA.
SCREW-CUTTING STOCK AND DIE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK L. IIARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butler, in the parish of De Soto, State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw- Cutting Stocks and Dies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a screw cutting stock and die and more particularly to the class of adjustable stocks having screw cutting dies.
The primary object of the invention is the provision ofa die stock comprising pivotal handle members forming opening and closing jaws, the latter provided with thread cutters or surfaces, one of the jaws having pivotally connected thereto a latch to engage the other jaw to hold the said jaws in a closed position and to receive between the same a pipe, rod or the like to be threaded and an adjustable member for regulating the extent of closing of the jaws, whereby the said jaws will be positioned to receive work of varying sizes to be threaded.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a die stock having pivotal jaws provided with thread cutting surfaces, means carried by one of the aws to position the said jaws with respect to each other to accommodate pipes or rods of dilferent diameters therebetween and locking means for holding the aws in their adjusted positions.
A further object-of the invention is the provision of a die stock, the construction of which is generally simplified, improved and the practical efficiency thereof increased.
IVith these and other objects in View the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim while the preferred form of embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings. However, changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention such as come properly within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a side view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the die stock in opened position. Fig.

Serial No. 441,167.
3 is a top plan view with the die stock open and the locking means being partly broken away. Fig. 4 is a side view with the die stock in an adjusted open position.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
In the drawings, the numerals 5 and 6 designate the handles or levers of the die stock and 7 and 8 the jaws of which the latter has spaced parallel ears 9 while the jaw 8. is provided with a lug 10 mounted between the said ears and connected thereto by a pivot 11 to form a hinge connection for the jaws to permit the same to be opened and closed. At the opposite side of the die stock with respect to its hinged connection and projecting from the meeting edges of the said jaws 8 and 9 at right angles to the levers 5 and 6 are lugs 12 and 13 and directly in rear of the latter lug is an car 14 having connected thereto by a pivot 15 a swinging latch member 16 adapted to be swung over the other lug 12 when the jaws are in a closed position and to maintain the same in such position.
In the lug 12 centrally of the same and extending transversely thereof is a screw threaded opening 17 in which is mounted an adjustable member 18 the latter having a squared head 19 whereby a wrench or other suitable tool can be applied thereto for ad justing the said member 18 in the opening so that when the latch member has been swung over the lugs 12 and 13 to have its right angular extension 20 or hook terminal overlie the squared head 19 of the said member 18, the said jaws 7 and 8 will be held in a locked and an adjusted position with respect to each other.
Centrally in the inner faces of the jaws 8 and 9 respectively are semi-circular recesses 21 each having projecting thread cutting portions or die faces 22 and which recesses when the aws are brought to a closed position are directly opposite and in register with each other to receive therein a pipe or rod not shown which latter is acted upon by the thread cutting portions 22 for threading the pipe or rod.
It is obvious that the adjustable member 18 is worked inwardly or outwardly of the threaded opening 17 so as to decrease or increase the space between the jaws 7 and 8 when brought to a closed position and held locked by the latch member 16 thrown into position over the lugs 12 and 13 to engage the squared head 19 which latter will be positioned between the inner face of the extension 20 of said latch member and the lug 12 and in this manner the die stock will be held in a locked and adjusted position to accommodate pipes or rods to be acted upon of different sizes and to produce threads on the latter.
To detach or remove the die stock from engagement with the work such as a pipe or rod after having been threaded thereby the latch member 16 is swung out of engagement with the squared head 19 of the adjustable member 18 whereby the jaws 7 and 8 are freed and permitted to be swung to an open position to liberate the work therefrom.
What is claimed is A die stock of the class described comprising a pair of jaws hinged together at one side and provided with lever handles longitudinally in said jaw and having its free end disposed in said cut-away portion, and semi-circular thread cutting surfaces mounted in the mutually adjacent faces of said jaws.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK L. HARKER.
