BARBER'S COMB.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT.23, 1520.

HORACE L. DODGE, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
BARBERS COMB.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nut-r, 16, 1920.
Application filed September 23, 1920. Serial No. 412,245.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE in Dover, a citizen of the United States of America. residing at Richmond. in the" county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Barbers Combs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a guiding or gaging comb for directing the operation or path of movement of the shears in cutting or trimming hair to the end that uniformity in the cutting operation may be secured without the exercise of that skill which is necessary under the ordina y conditions and which usually is possessed only by barbers or those who have made business of cutting hair and have had rela-- tively long experience in that connection; and incidentally it is an object of the invention to provide a comb directing or guiding means which is adjustable with relation to the plane of the comb so as to provide for varying the distance between the same and the head of the person whose hair is being out or trimmed, to the end that preferred variations in the length of the hair or the portion of the hair to remain, may be modified to suit the preference of the wearer, the plane of operation of the shears with re lation to the head of the wearer being determined by the distance between the plane of the comb and the head; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawings, whereinc- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a comb embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail section on the'piane indi cated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The comb 10 illustrated in the drawing is in general features of a conventional form having the teeth 11, and for convenience a handle 12 may be arranged at one end thereof, and carried by the comb in the transverse plane of the back or untoothed portion thereof is a guide bar 13 disposed in substantial parallelism with the plane of the comb and preferably rounded so that it may be readily moved over the surface of the head of the person whose hair is being cut, to position the comb in a plane at a uniform distance from the surface of the head at all portions of the latter, the upper or outer surface of the comb as in the ordinary practice serving as the guide or rest for the shears used in cutting the hair and being employed to cut that portion of the hair which projects throughor between the teeth of th comb and extends above the plane thereof. The indicated arrangement, with the guide bar bearing on the surface of the head with the comb outermost to serve as a guide for the shears is obviously the preferred arrangement in trimming hair but obviously the reverse arrangement may under certain circumstances and in accordance with the preference of the operator be adopted in which event the comb would be disposed adjacent to the surface of the head with the rod serving as the guide to determine the plane of cutting operation of the shears which may be disposed to rest upon said rod.
Preferably provision is made for varying thedistance between the guide rod and the plane of the comb as by equipping the rod adjacent to one end with parallel stems 14: extending through openings 15 in the comb and engaged by thumb nuts 16, coiled springs 17 being arranged upon said stems between the plane of the comb and the rod, so that by loosening the thumb nuts the distance between the rod and the plane of the comb will be increased by the expansive action of the springs, whereas by tightening the thumb screws, the rod will be drawn toward the plane of the comb in opposition to the action of the springs.
A further advantage in the use of the expansion springs is that they serve to yieldingly position the guide rod with relation to' the plane of the comb so as to exert a yielding pressure upon the head of-the person whose hair is being cut, as the comb is manipulated by means of the handle 12.
At the opposite end of the comb from the handle 12 there is preferably provided an extension 18 having teeth 19 arranged in a reversed relation to the teeth 11 for use in engaging hair near the ears or where the use of the body portion of the comb would involve difliculty or interference by reason of the location of the guide rod.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A hair cutting comb having a guide rod extended in substantial parallelism with the plane thereof and movable toward and from said plane.
2. A hair cutting comb having a guide rod provided with stems fitted in guide openings in'the comb and means for securing said stems with the rod in adjusted relations to the plane of the comb.
3. A hair cutting comb having in combination therewith a guide rod disposed in ;vary the difference between the same and the plane of the comb, andadjusting nuts engaged with said stems for securing the rod in ts ZLClJHS'CGC]. positions. 7
4. A hair cutting comb having. a guide rod disposed in parallelism therewith and provided with stems extended through guide openings in the comb and fitted with thumb nuts, and springs interposed between the said rod and the comb for yieldingly ho1ding the former in spaced relation withthe latter.
5. A hair cutting comb having a guide rod disposed in substantial parallelism with the plane thereof and provided beyond the extremity of said rod with an extension havmg teeth disposed in reversed relation to those of the comb.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
