Application January 13, 1950, Serial No. 138,435
This invention relates to combs for cutting hair particularly by amateurs, and in particular a comb having a handle extended therefrom with a plurality of spacing fingers extended through the comb and adapted to be adjusted for cutting hair to different lengths.
The purpose of this inventionis to provide adjustable means in combination with a comb whereby an amateur may cut hair evenly and with the length of the hair graduated from the neck to the upper part of the head.
Various attachments and devices have been provided in combination with combs for varying the distance the comb may be held from the head to facilitate cutting hair but it has been found difficult to regulate the device for cutting hair accurately to different lengths as cutting pro gresses upwardly on the head. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a comb hav ing means for positively setting fingers extended from the comb to different positions and in which the position of the fingers is adjusted continuously as the comb is in use.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for mounting spacing ng'ers on a comb for cutting hair whereby the distance of the spacing ngers from the comb is readily adjustable.
y Another object of the invention is to provide means for adjustably mounting spacing lingers on a comb for cutting hair in Vwhich the nngers are brought against the comb as the comb is inserted in the hair and then released for cutting.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved comb for cutting hair to different lengths having spacing lingers adjustably mounted thereon which is of a comparatively simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a comb having a handle extended at a right angle from the back thereof with a bar having a plurality of spacing fingers thereon extended through the comb and adjustably mounted on the handle and wherein the position of the bar is controlled by a trigger and spring.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a cross section through the irnproved hair cutting comb taken on line I-I of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the comb shown in Figure 1.
4 Claims. (Cl. 132-45) Figure 3 is a detail showing a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1 showing the intermediate part of the comb with the ends broken away.
Figure 4 is a detail showing a section on line 4 4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a detail showing a section taken on line 5'-5 of Figure 1. I
Figure 6 is a similar detail taken on line 6--5 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings whereinlike reference characters denote corresponding parts the hair cutting comb of this invention includes a comb In, a handle Il, a plurality of spacing fingers I2 carried by a bar I3 and a trigger I4 carried by a tube I5 on a stem I6 having a knurled head Il on the outer end.
The comb II) is provided with a back I8 and a plate I3, having a slot 2D therein, extends from the center of the back I8 and is positioned per'- pendicular to the plane of the comb. The handle II is carried by the outer end of the'plate I9 andfthe plate I9 is also provided with a slot` 2I through which the knurled nut I1 extends and a bearing22 in whichthe outer end of vthe-stem is journaled.
The stem I6 extends from the bearing 22 through an opening 23 in the back I8 ofthe comb Il) and a head 24 is provided on the end of the stem'and positioned on the opposite side of the comb, as shown in Figure 1.
A stop plate 25 is threaded on the stem I8 and this plate, which is provided with a flat surface 2B that engages the upper surface of the plate I9 to prevent rotation thereof, provides a stop to limit outward movement of the bar I3 on which the spacing lingers I2 are carried. The spacing lingers I2, which are L-shaped as shown in Figure 4, are provided with Shanks which extend through openings 21 in the back of the comb and as the bar I3 is actuated by the trigger I4 the fingers I2 are drawn against the outer surface of the comb I0. The tube I5 on which the trigger I4 is carried is integral with the bar I3 and is also provided with a flange 28 on the inner end. The flange 28 is provided with a pointer 23 that is positioned to travel on a scale 3l] whereby the stop plate 25 may be positioned to regulate the length of hair being cut. The bar I3 and spring fingers I2 are urged outwardly by a spring 3I positioned on the stem I6.
The back of the comb is also provided with a. cover plate 32 that is secured to the comb by screws 33, thereby providing a shield to prevent hair dropping into the moving parts of the device.
With the parts arranged in this manner the 3 spacing fingers I2 may rst be set by the knurled head I1 so that they are of an inch from the comb I and when the comb is placed against the head the fingers I2 are held against the outer surface of the comb by the trigger I4. When the comb is in position the trigger is released and the spring 3| forces the spacing fingers I2 away from the comb and the hair is cut against the inner surface of the comb.
In the next step the spacing fingers are set to 1A; of an inch and the fingers are drawn against the comb and released in the same manner. This cycle of operations continues as cutting progresses upwardly on the head and the hair may, therefore, be cut evenly and with the length of the hair increasing toward the upper part of thehead.
It will be understood that modifications may be made in the design and arrangement ofthe parts without departing. from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
