' nan-cur onm m To all whom it concern:
Be it knowri tli MAN, a citizen ing at Hoboken, 1n the county of 'l ludson and State of New Jersey, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Cans or the like, of which the'iollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to drawing. This invention relates to cans for holding 7 its object to provide an improved construction whereby a can of this character will be protected from being battered or intrated in Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 a detail view of dented when handled roughly or dropped violently on the groundor pavement. To this end the invention comprises a series of cushioning springs which are attached to the bottom of the can and bent loosely around the bottom flange of the can and then in such a manner that the sides will be protected against indentations when the can is being dumped over the edge of a collecting wagon, and the bottom of the can will be protected from injury when the can is dropped'violently on the ground or pavement. I
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the improved can, and Fig. 2 is a bottom view thereof. Fig. 3 illustrates a slightly modified form of the invention. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the brackets at the top of the can shown in the form of the invention illusone of the side brackets of the can.
Referring to the drawing 12 denotes the body of the can and 13 the bottom thereof. To a fiat ring or disk 14 on the bottom of the can is attached, by riveting or otherwise, a series of radial springs 15 which are bent loosely'around the flange 16 at the bottom of. the can and are extended up to form side sprin 17 which are loosely connected with brac ets 18' attached to the sides of the can, as by rivets 19, extending through slots 20 in the outer faces of the brackets18. The rivets 19, in the construction shown, are held in place by small plates 21 riveted to the side springs 17 and the inner heads of the rivets 19 will be formed thereon after the rivets have been passedthroughthe slots 20and before the brackets 18 are rivetedto the can body 12.

to move to a limited extent.
The springs 15 are so constructed as normally to spring away from the bottom 13 65. Y of the can, as shown in Fi as to hold the loops 15 gs. 1 and 3,-so at the bottom of the can free from or below the lower edge of the flange 16. The said loops are loosely rackets 22 riveted to the connected to the said flange by meansof NIL- rivets 23 which are free to have a limited sliding movement in slot 24 formed in the said flange 16.
In the construction shown in Fi 3 the, vertical side springs 17 are rivete top of the can and are loosely connected with brackets 18 by rivets 19 as in the construction shown in Fi From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention comprises not only means been heretofore proposed, but also means for protectin the bottom of the can when roughly han led or dropped to the pave-, ment, the jar the spring loops 15 Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent:
1. A can, for the purpose indicated, com-j springs attached to the ttom thereof and loosely bent around the to the 15] or shock of the impact, in such-case, being absorbed or cushioned by flange at the bottom of the can, said springs extending upwardly along the sides of t can and being connected with the top of the latter.
2. A can, for the purpose indicated, com-' prising a series of springs attached to the bottom thereof and loosely bent around the 5100 fiange at the bottom of the can, said springs extending upwardly along the sides of the can and being connected with the top of the latter, combined with brackets attached to the sides of the can and with which brackets the said springs are loosely connected. y y 1 3. A can, for the purpose indicated, com,- prising a bottom thereof and flange at the bottom ofthe can, said springs series of springs attached to the loosely bent around the sides of the 7 can and being connected with the top of the 4. An ash can or the like having a botlatter, combined with brackets attached to tom flange, combined with a series of radial the sides of the can and with which springs at the bottom of the can and hav- 10 brackets the said springs are loosely conin loops loosely connected with said flange. nected, and with brackets attached to the %n testimony whereofI afiix my signature. top of the can with which the said side springs are also connected.
