This invention relates to closures for bottles and other containers and is an improvement n or modification of the invention claimed 111 my United States Patents Nos. 1,651,669
5 and 1,667,770, respectively, granted December 6, 1927 and May 1, 1928.
In my said Patent No. 1,651,669 I have described a closure for containers which comprises a resilient disk, formed with a number of peripheral fingers adapted to engage the internal wall of the mouth of the container and having a central bulged portion capable of being moved from one side of the horizontal to the other whereby the fingers are moved into engagement, while the interior of the mouth of the container is of a size to be frictionally engaged by the fingers or is provided with a ledge on which the ends of the fingers rest. The ends of the peripheral 0 fingers may be flanged. The disk may or may not be combined with an outer cap which when the closure is in position engages the top of the mouth of the container.
In the construction illustrated in Figure 2 of said Patent No. 1,667,770 which applies both to a resilient and spring disk, the peripheral fingers are shown as lying on the inside of a cylindrical surface passing through the edge of the disk that is the junction of the centralbulged portion (with the fingers). Operation of a closure formed of a resilient disk constructed in accordance with this figure is effected owing to the engagement of the flanged ends of the fingers with a ledge or its equivalent formed on the internal wall of the mouth of the container.
According therefore to one feature of the present invention the disk at its periphery or the internal diameter of the wall of the container at its mouth is of such a size that a positive stop or engagement is made between the edge of the disk and the inner periphery or rim of the mouth of the container, in order to arrest and hold the disk against downward movement into the container whereby further pressure on the central bulged portion will cause it to move from the open to the closed position. The peripheral fingers may be so constructed that when the central bulged portion is in the release position they lie 011 a conical surface or at an inclination within the cylindrical surface containing the edge of the disk.
The fingers may be flanged or flared at their ends and engage beneath a ledge or shoulder formed on the internal wall of the mouth of the container.
According to another feature of the invention the disk is provided with a bead or lip formed at the base of the peripheral fingers at their junction with the central bulged portion. The bead or lip also serves to increase the tightness of the joint, and further to stiflien the flexing or diaphragm action of the central bulged portion. This construction is particularly suitable in cases when the disk is not used in conjunction with an outer cap.
The lip may be of such a size as to cover or extend beyond the rim of the container, with which it engages when the closure is applied.
It is desirable when the disk has a bead that the mouth of the container be channelled to receive the bead. WVhen also a head or lip is provided the slots forming the peripheral fingers need not extend up to the edge of the central bulged portion but may be started on the underside of the bead or lip.
According to a further feature of this in-' vention the outer cap is so formed with cam engaging means adapted to co-operate with a cam track on the outer wall of the container that on the rotation of the outer cap the disk is moved to the release or secure position.
In one such construction in which the outer cap is preferably directly connected to the disk, the flange of the outer cap constitutes the cam and is adapted to engage a shoulder forming the cam track on the outer wall of the container. The cam and track may be of any suitable shape accordin to whether it is desired to open or close the closure in a complete or partial rotation of the cap. In the preferred embodiment the cap in section is V shaped and engages the upper surface of a similarly formed cam track, when a half turn will be sufficient to open the closure.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figures 1 to 5 are diametrical sectional elevations of different forms'of closures constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 6 is an elevation of the closure shown in Figure 5. Figure 7 is a diametric section through another form of the closure.
In the drawings a is a disk formed with a number of peripheral fingers b and 0 is the mouth of a container. The disk has a bulged portion d which may be moved to positions above and below the horizontal as shown in the drawings, the position on the left in Figures 1-5 showing the disk when closed, and on the right when opened.
Referring to Figure 1, the disk is formed with a bead 1 at the junction of the disk 1 and the peripheral fingers. In Figure 2 a modified form of bead is shown at 2. In Figure 8 the inner rim of the mouth of the container is formed with a channel 3 to form a seat for the bead 2. Figure 4 shows a fur ther modification in which the disk in addition to having the head 1, is formed with an outwardly extending lip or bead L which rests upon the rim of the container.
In Figures 5 and 6 the outer wall of the container adj aeent the mouth is formed with a cam track 5 and the outer cap, shown at g, is formed with a flange 6 constituting the cam in that its lower edge is irregular. The outer cap 9 and disk (1 are connected to one another in such manner as to allow relative rotation of the two parts so that by giving theouter cap 9 a half turn the cam 6 will be caused to ride up the track 5 and move: the bulged portion d to the open position.
Referring now to Figure 7 the peripheral fingers Z) are flared at 7 and the container mouth is inwardly enlarged and has a taper at 8 corresponding to the fiare 7 beneath which the flared portion engages when in the closed position as shown on the right hand side of the figure. In certain cases the mouth of the container may be fiared as for instance the container shown in Figure 7 when the disk is modified by adjusting the angle at which the portions 6 and 7 of the fingers are set with respect to one another.
It will be seen that the diameter of the disk is slightly greater than that of the mouth of the container so that engagement will take place to arrest the movement of the disk into the mouth of the container and to cause the central bulged portion on further pressureto move from the position shown onthe left hand side of Figure 7 to the position on the right hand side.
The fingers are so constructed that when the central bulged portion is in the open position, they lie inside a line drawn at right angles to the plane of projection of the central bulged portion, or they may lie at-right angles to that plane. Preferably they have an inward bend at their ends as shown at 9.
hen the fingers lie at right angles to the plane of projection of the central bulged portion the mouth of the container will be undercut to receive them when the central bulged portion is in the closed position.
It will be understood that the present invention is applicable to both resilient and spring disks although in the construction shown in Figure 7 it will be found that a resilient disk is more easily operated.
hat I claim is 1. The combination with a container, of a resilient closure disk therefor formed with a number of peripheral fingers capable of being sprung into release and secure positions, said disk extending outwardly beyond the mouth of the container whereby a positive step for insertion of the closure' into the container is afforded by engagement of the disk with the mouth substantially at the junction of the fingers and disk.
2. The combination with a container, of a resilient closure disk therefor formed with a number of peripheral fingers capable of being sprung into release and secure positions, said fingers having portions substantially forming a cone inwardly of the periphery of the disk, said disk extending outwardly beyond the mouth of the container whereby a positive step for insertion of the closure into the container is afforded by engagement of the disk with the mouth substantially at the junction of the fingers and disk.
3. A closure as claimed in claim 1 in which the container has an internal shoulder and in which the fingers are flanged at their ends and adapted when in the closed position to and secure positions, said fingers having portions substantially forming a cone when in the release position, outwardly extending portions on said fingers, of a container having its mouth of less diameter than the disk whereby the internal wall of said mouth is of a size forming a positive stop for the disk at the junction of the latter and fingers, said wall having a shoulder adapted to be engaged by the said outwardly extending portions in the secure position of the closure.
5. The combination with a resilient closure disk formed with a number of peripheral fingers depending from its periphery and capable of being sprung into release and secure positions, of a container having the internal wall of its mouth of a size forming a positive step for engagement by the disk substantially at the junction of the latter with the fingers.
6. The combination with a resilient closure disk formed with a number of fin ers and havin a central bulged portion, said fingers extending from the periphery of said bulged portion, said bulged portion being capable of being sprung into release and secure positions, of a container having a mouth of less diameter than the disk whereby the internal Wall of said mouth is of a size forming a positive stop for the disk at the junction of the fingers and the central bulged portion.
7. The combination with a container and its mouth, of a resilient closure disk therefor formed With a number of peripheral fingers capable of being sprung into release and secure positions, said disk being engageable with a portion of the mouth of the container and being of greater lateral extent than said portion whereby a positive stop for insertion of the closure into the container is aliorded by engagement of the disk With said mouth.
