A TTOHNEYS PATENT o Flcs.
LEON Terms, or new YORK, N. Y.
7 SHAVING-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1920.
Application filed March 22, 1920. Serial No. 367,809.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEON Toniis, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shaving-Brush, of which the following is a full, clear and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in shaving brushes, an object of the invention being to provide a shaving brush equipped with the ordinary bristles for forming and distributing lather and also provided with means for rubbing the lather into the face to soften the heard, the parts so constructed and arranged as to permit either the bristles or the rubbing device to be exposed for use at the end of suitable handle.
A further object is to provide an improved construction of handle having a brush slidably mounted therein so that the latter can be projected from the end of the handle or inclosed within the handle and provide on the end of the handle a rubbing or massag ing attachment which is in position for use when the brush is inclosed in the handle.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and ar rangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating my invention;
Fig. 2 is a. view in longitudinal section; and
F 3 is a. view in transverse section. on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
1 represents a cylindrical handle having a knob or closure 2 at one end. Slidably mounted in the handle 1 is a cylindrical carrier or body 8 in which the bristles 4 forming a shaving brush are rigidly secured in any approved manner.
The parts 3 and a constitute a shaving brush and the body 3 fits within the handle 1 and is slidably mounted therein so that it can be moved longitudinally either to project the bristles as shown, or when moved to its other extreme position to so position the bristles that they will be entirely inclosed in the handle.
To facilitate and control this movement of the brush I provide screws 5 which are projected through longitulinal slots 6 in the handle 1 and extend sufliciently beyond the outer surface of the handle to afford a ready grlp to allow a free manipulation of the brush. Notches 7 and 8 are provided at the ends of the slots 6 and notches 9 intermediate the ends of the slots 6, so that these screws 5 may be secured in any of these notches. When the screws 5 are in either of the extreme notches 7 or 8, the brush will either be inclosed inthe handle or fully projected therefrom but when the screws are in the intermediate notches 9, the bristles 4 will be but partially projected so as to provide a shorter, more rigid length of supports a ring 11 preferably of soft rubber. T5
The ring 11 is formed with an internal annular groove or recess 12 to receive the flange l0 and said ring is of suflicient elasticity to allow it to be stretched or spread open to receive the flange l0 and will spring into locked position thereon. The ring 11 on its outer face is made with a series of relatively small lugs or projections 13 and may be otherwise surfaced so as to give the desired rubbing or massaging action to rub thebeard and the skin so as to soften the beard previous to shaving.
This practice of softening the heard is commonly carried out by rubbing the lather into the face with the fingers and when this operation is performed by a barber or other person, it is extremely unsanitary and more or less dangerous. By providing a device such as above explained, it is not necessary for the barber or other operator to touch the face with his fingers and the massaging and heard softening operation can be easily and quickly performed in a sanitary manner.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A device of the character stated, comprising a cylindrical handle, an annular flange on the open end of the handle, a closure device on the other end of the handle, said handle having a longitudinal slot and notches at the ends of the slot and at the intermediate portion thereof, a massage device located on the flange and having a massaging surface at the end of the handle, a brush comprising a cylindrical body fitting the handle and supporting bristles, and a pin projecting from the cylindrical body and through the said slot, said pin adapted to be operated to move the brush longitudinally of the handle to hold the brush entirely 10 within the handle or to project the brush partially or fully from the handle and to lock the brush in any of saidpositions by moving said pin in the said notches.
