CHARLES J. PALM, F NEVIA'RII, NEW JERSEY.
1 DEVICE roe noLzoiiie rmno-covsns e0 PIANOS.
To all to from it may concern Be it known that I, Cin nnns J. PALM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in De vices for Holding Piano-Covers to Pianos, of which the following is a full, clear, and
description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters or reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates'to curtain supports for a piano, the object being to provide in such a support, features of construction whereby a curtain may be easily applied to or removed from its support; which shall be easy of manipulation and removal; shall be capable of being made in an inexpensive manner according to desire or taste. A fur ther object of this invention is to furnish a support and cover or curtain tor upright pianos by which the upper part orthe entire piano is inclosed in such a manner that it does not interfere with the sound of the instrument, and which has at the same time a very ornamental and attractive appearance.
Referring to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which I have illustrated one preferable embodiment of my invention, I will proceed to describe the same, having it understood that I am not limited to the specific details of construction shown and described, as it is manifest that these may be modified and changed without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Figure 1 represents a plan view, partly in section, of the preferred embodiment of my invention, secured to the cover of a piano with the curtain removed.
Fig. 2 represents a sectional side elevation taken on line c0-m of Fig. 1. 7
Figs. 3 and 4L- represent respectively a plan view and a side elevation of the adjustable bracket for the curtain support, and,
Fig. 5 represents a fragmentary perspec tive view of the curtainsupport and curtain secured to the cover of a piano.
In the drawings, I have shown a support which may consist of a single rod or tube, or as shown, said support being preferably made telescopic so as to be adjustable to Specification of Letters Pater. Patm tqgd N6 9, 1929. Application filed-March 22, 1918. Serial no. 223,902.
pianos of different lengths and widths, and
manner, and preferably to the lid or cover.
of the same, are brackets 33, each bracket preferably made from a single piece of rod or tube, one end of which is flattened to provide a base or toot which may be provided with one or more screw holes so that the bracket may be secured to the back of the piano or cover.
Any suitable means may be provided to secure a friction fastening for the curtain support: and bracket to hold the same in adjusted and operative position. In the present instance I'may provide a screw 5 in the ends of the tubes 1 and 2 which enwith the free ends of the brackets 38 as clearly indicated in the drawings.
This construction makes it a comparatively easy matter to attach the support to the lid, cover or back of apiano, and then to adjust it to the desired length and width oi"- the piano. I
In order to provide a simple, inexpensive, adjustable and readily removable supporting device for the curtain support, I employ two members numbered 6 and 7, adjustably secured together in anydesirable manner, preferably by means of a slot 8 provided in the member 6 and a stud 9 and a nut 10 carried by the member 7 as hereinafter described. The members 6 and 7 of the supporting device are preferably made from flat sheet metal, the member 6 being provided with an offset portion 11 designed to engage with the rear of the piano cover or lid 12 and the member T is also provided with an offset portion lite" engage with the front of the piano cover or lid and by means of which said supporting device is adjustably secured to said lid or cover. The offset portion 11 and 13 of the members 6 and 7 may have a shape corresponding to the shape of the edge of the piano cover or lid 12, with which they engage. By means oi tie slot 8 formed in the member 6 and the stud 9 and nut 10 carried by the member 7, it is readily understood how said members can be removably secured to the piano cover or lid without the use of screws or the like. The member 6 is further provided with an adjustable receiving element 1 i, designed to receive and support the curtain support, formed by doubling the metal of the member 6 1n the manner illustrated'and securing it together by means of a screw 15 or the like. The receiving element 14: is'preferably shaped to conform to the shapeof the telescopic sec- 5 tionsl and 2. 7
By any of the well known fastening devices a curtain or the like, may be slidably secured to the curtain supportby which the upper part or the entire piano isinclosed in 10 such a manner as'not'to interfere with the 1 sound of the instrument, and which has'at the same time a very ornamental and attractive appearance. The adjustable support,
as previously stated is made from ordinarysheet metal and the parts are'of suchshapes as to lend themselves readily to manufacture by the use of ordinary tools and dies.
Experience has demonstrated that the organization above described, is a highly.
efficient one, and while the device described is the preferred embodiment of my present invention, I do not care to restrict myself tovthe exact details of construction, combination and arrangements herein set forth,it
being obvious that'minor variations thereof,
not involving the exercise of'invention, may
be made-by any skilled mechanic, and such departures "from what is herein described and claimed,'not involving invention I con-v 3 0 sider within the scope and terms of claims. a
'Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the character described, 7
the combination of a tubular curtain-support, brackets in engagement with the ends of said curtain support and secured to the cover of a piano, and a bracket comprising two members adjustably secured together, 40
the ends of said members engaging the front 7 and rear edges of the piano cover, one of said members being further provided with a recelvmg element to hold the curtain support in adjusted and operative position.
i 2. In a device-of the character described, the combination of a tubular curtain support, comprising two telescopic sections, brackets secured to the cover of the piano in engagement with "theends of said tubular sections, means for adjusting the ends of said sections relative to said brackets and an A V CHARLES J. PALM.
