WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
Application filed May 19, 1920. Serial No. 382,548.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HALBMTTER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of lhlassachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in 1Wrenches, of. which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The' present invention relates to an improvement in wrenches of that type in which a chain or other flexibleA member, passed around the work, acts one of the operating parts.
The invention is essentially an improvement upon the wrench shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 802,187, of Octoberl 17, 1905.
The object of the invention is to provide whereby the wrench may be operated for turning the work in reverse. directions without the renewal or readjustment of the chain or flexible member. A further object is to provide whereby the parts of the wrench may be easily assembled or disassembled or the wearing parts easily replaced as occasion may require.
ihe invention can best be seen and understood by reference to ,the drawings, `in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench j occupying an engaging position applied to a piece of pipe, the handle of the wrench being shown only in part. x
Fic'. 2 is a plan of the same.
is an interior side elevation of one of the sides or cheeks of the head of the wrench.
Fig. il; is the same as Fig. 1 excepting that one of the sides or cheeks of the wrench is removed and certain of the connecting parts are shown in cross section. The ligure illustrates the engaging position assumed by the operating parts of the wrench for turning the pipe or work in one direction.
liig. 5 is the saine as Fig. et excepting that the operating parts have been moved to assume a changed engaging position for turning the pipe or worl; in a reverse direction to that obtained bythe arrangement shown in Fig. 1, and Y F 6 is a section taken on the line 6 6 of ne Referring to the drawings 1 represents the head of the wrench, 2 the lever with operating handle, 3 the flexible member or chain and t the work.
The head 1 of the wrench 'comprises spaced sides or cheeks 5, 5, respectively. Projecting from the inner faces of these sides are alined butts 6, 6, with meeting ends which preferably llt into'one another. These butts act'to space the sides and whencombined form a bearing with which the end of the lever has engagement, as will later be explained. The sides are fastened by means of a pin or bolt 7 passed through them and through the respective butts and headed against the outer Afaces of theisides. VThe outer ends of the respective sides or cheeks engage the work, and for effecting such engagement` the ends are made substantially V-shaped with opposing jaws 8 and 9, respectively, provided with transverse teeth. Adjacent their inner or rear edges the sides are provided with longitudinal slots 110. Contained to run within theser slots and extending through them is a crosspin or bolt 11 on which the inner end 12 of the lever isfpivotally mounted. The bolt 11 is lheld against lateral displacement and otherwise retained to be movable freely within theslots by fitting the bolt at one end with a head 13 and a washer 15 interposed between it and the outer face of one of the sides, of the head adjacent theslot in it. At the opposite end the boltis provided with `a nut 14 and `washer 15 interposed between it and theother side ofthe head adjacent the slot in it. The nut 14 lits `upon a contracted portion of the bolt.
extending forward from a shoulder 16 on the bolt which lies slightly outside the slot so that when the nut is tightened it and the interposed washer lwill tighten against the shoulder 16, the parts being thereby made secure, butenabling the bolt to be movable yfreelywithin the slots inthe head."
The inner end 12 of the lever `is so reduced as to leave a `space on either side between it and the inner faces of the respective sides 5, 5 ofthe head between whichv it is interposed. Located within the l spaces thus provided and pivotally secured to the body ofthe pin 'or bolt llare' spaced links 17, 17. `These links extend outwar'dlyby the inner faces of the respective" sides and to the outer ends thereof is connected the inner the gripping parts have been released sufiiciently to enable" the wrench to assume a changed position, when the operation may be continued simply by a .tui-ther elevation ot the handle (sec Fig. 5).
It is to be notedthat during the shitting ot' the wrench upon the work for the purpose of obtaining a Jresh grip and especially during the operation ot the wrench for imparting a reverse movement to the work, it is unnecessary to rewrap the chain around the work or reacljust it in any way, the shitting of the wrench on the work or the reverse turning thereof being effected simply by manipulation of the handle. j
Having thus fully described my'invention, l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States il.
