JOHN B. DOWNEY AND ARTHUR C. EDGEOO MB, .OF TOPSHAM, MAINE.
ROD-FULLER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN B. DOWNEY and ARTHUR C. Enenooirc, citizens of the United States, residing at Topsham, in the county of Sagadahoc and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rod-Pullers, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to rod pullers and has for an object to provide a device with improved means for engaging and exerting stress upon a rod as, for instance, the tie rod of a concrete pouring-mold to withdraw the rod from the concrete mass which has been poured about such .rod.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure l is a view of the device in plan or elevation according to the position in which the device is operated, it being operable in either of such positions,
Fig. 2 is a view of the device in end elevation,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the base to which the lever is fulcrumed,
Fig. 1 is a view in edge elevation of the gripping member, and
Fig. 5 is a view of the gripping member in plan.
The rod puller which forms the subject matter of this application comprises a base adapted to bear against a fixed abutment 10 which may be the surface of a concrete wall or any body from which a rod is to be pulled or any article from which the pulling is to take place. The base 10 is shown as approximately square, it being understood, however, that the design of the base is immaterial to the presentinvention but is provided with upstanding ears 11 which fulcrum the pulling lever at 12.
The pulling lever comprises spaced plate members 13 each of which is separately fulcrumed to one of the ears 11 by one of the pintles 12 and are connected by means of the handle portion 14:. Between the plates 13 of the lever the gripping member 15 is pivoted, as at 16, and is provided with an opening 17 to receive the rod 18 which is to be pulled.
For the purpose of permitting the swinging of the gripping member 15 without hindrance, the base 10 is provided with concave depression 19 within, which the opening 20 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1920.
Applicationfiled January 23, 1920. Serial No. 353,432.
is provided for the passageof the rod 18. To further strengthen the device, arcuate grooves 21 are provided in the base 10 in which the segmental plates 13 are engaged so that the rotation of the plates about their fulcrum 12 does not displace the circumferential edges from the arcuate grooves 21.
. In operation it is assumed that the rod to be pulled has an end extending beyond the face of some body or fixed abutment, as indicated at Figs. 1 and 2. The device is applied by passing the base 10 over the rod with the rod through the opening 20 of the base and simultaneously through the opening 17 of the gripping member 15. The lever is moved to the position providing for the gripping member to engage the red as near to the face of the abutment as convenient and by reason of the eccentric pivoting of the gripping member 15 a movement of the lever causes the edges of the gripping member, surrounding the opening 17, to en gage the rod 18 in the usual well-known manner. The gripping of the rod in this manner and by this mechanism prevents the gripping member from slipping upon the rod and the manual moving of the lever about its fulcrum must result in the moving of the rod 18 relative to the base 10 and consequently relative to the abutment upon which the base 10 rests. If necessary after swinging the lever from the full line to the dotted line position, as shown at Fig. 1, the device may again be movedupon the rod, a second grip taken and the rod pulled another step, which action may be repeated as often as may be required to entirely move the rod from its engagement.
Having thus fully described our said invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A rod puller comprising a base having a centrally disposedrod-receiving opening therein and with arouate grooves formed upon opposite sides of the opening, a com posite lever comprising spaced plates having segmental members fulcrumed upon the base with peripheries of the segments movable in the arcuate grooves symmetrically spaced upon opposite sides of the opening in the base, and a gripping member pivoted between the members of the lever, said gripping member having a rod-receiving opening which is concentric with the rod-receiving opening of the base when the rod puller is in its initial position.
- 2.7 A rod puller comprising a base having a rod-receiving opening therein and with arcuate grooves formed upon opposite sides of the opening, a composite lever compris ing spaced plates having segmental members fulcrumed upon the base With the periph eriesof the segments movable in the arcuate grooves spaced upon opposite sides of the opening in the base, and a gripping mem ber pivoted between the members of the lever.
In WitnessWhei-eof We have hereunto set our hands and seals at Waterville, Maine this 10th day of J anuary, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty.
