UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS A. MATTHEWS, 0F NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
ENVELOP on. CARD DELIVERY CABINET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. THouAs A. MAT- rri-mws, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops or Card Delivery Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to envelops or card delivery cabinets of the type shown in my Patents 748.966, 1,060,007 and 1,091,856.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient mechanism for delivering the envelops or cards from the cabinet, together with means for keeping the packmoved up into proper relation to the delivering mechanism.
This object I accomplish by the construction shown in the accompanying drawing, in which: I
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a cabinet provided with my improved delivery mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the delivery me hanism. removed from the cabinet.
Fig. 3 is a detail, showing the follower.
The cabinet 1 is of suitable size and material and has a hinged lid 2 provided along its front edge with an outlet slot 3. This cabinet is the same as the one shown in my application filed of even date herewith.
Within the cabinet 1 is placed an open top box or container 4 having across its upper forward end a cross piece 5 provided at its front edge with an outlet slot 6 registering with slot 3 in the lid of the cabinet; an inclined flange 7 extending along the rear wall of slot 6 to direct the edge of the rising envelop or card through slot 3.
From opposite sides of the front end of the box or container 4, near the upper end thereof, project the ears 8 in which is journaled the shaft 9 provided with two polygonal or fluted rolls 10 which extend into the box 4 at the upper portion of its front end to be engaged by the front card or envelop of a pack.
The shaft 9 is provided with a pulley 12 and with a hand wheel 13 exterior to the cabinet. In the bottom of the box or container is a longitudinally extending feed screw 14 with its ends journaled in the ends of the box for rotary motion only. On the front end of the screw l4 is a pulley 15 conthrough.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct 26, 192() Application filed June 9, 1920 Serialfioi 387,594.
.nected with'pulley 12 by a belt 16. Parallel ,with the screw 14 and at opposite sides The follower 18 is actuated from the feed screw 14 means of a vertical slide 25 having a pin and slot connection 26 27 with the rear face of the follower and provided at its upper end with a finger piece 28 and at its lower end having a recess 24 the edge of 'which engages the screw after the manner of a half-nut so that rotation of the screw will move the follower toward the feed roll 10.
The screw engaging slide 25 is pressed down into engagement with the thread of the screw by means of a spring 30,' secured at one end to the base 19 and at its free end engaging an aperture 31 in the slide; the
follower being cut away at this point, asat 32, so as to-allow' the spring to project The pulleys and screw are proportioned to properly feed the follower 18 forwardlyas the envelops are fed upwardly by the feed rolls 10. l
Reverse movement of the shaft'9 is *prevented by means of a ratchet 35 thereon engaged by the pawl 36.
A person desiring a card or envelop turns the hand wheel to the right and this causesthe feed rolls to push one of the articles up through the outlet slots within reach of the fingers. At the same time the pulleys and belt will have given a slight turn to the feed screw to advance the follower and the pack in front thereof toward the feed rolls.
What I claim is 2' 1. The combination with an outercabinet having a delivery slot across the forward end of its top, of an inner open top container' or box for a pack of envelops 01' cards provided with a slot registering with the slot in the cabinet, a transverse feed shaft at the front of the container extending through the side of said cabinet and provided with an operating device, a feed roller on the shaft below said slot, a longitudinal feed screw in the bottom of the container or box, a vertical follower operatively connected atits lower portion with said screw.
a wheel on the front end of said screw, a wheel on the feed roller shaft, and a belt connecting said wheels.
2. In a delivery cabinet for envelops or cards, the combination with a box or case, of a transverse manually actuated shaft journaled at the upper portion of the front end thereof, a feed roll mounted on said shaft and extending into the front end of the box, a wheel on said shaft, a feed screw extending longitudinally along the bottom of the box and provided at its front end with a wheel, a belt connecting said wheels, longitudinal guides at opposite sides of the feed screw, :1 vertical follower to hold the pack or pile up to the feed roll provided at its lower ends with members sliding on the guide rods, and means for operatively connecting the lower end of the follower with the screw.
3. In a delivery cabinet for envelops or 7 cards, the combination with a container or box having an outlet slot across the front end of its top, of a transverse shaft journaled below said slot and provided with a feed roll extending inwardly through the front end of the box or container, a wheel on the transverse shaft, a feed screwjournaled in the lower end of the box or contrainer andhaving a wheel on its front end, a belt connecting said wheels, guide rods at opposite sides of the screw and parallel therewith, a vertical follower provided with a horizontal base having guide sleeves or eyes at its ends sliding on said guide rods, and means operatively connecting the follower with said screw.
4. In a delivery cabinet for envelops and cards, the combination with a box or container, of a transverse shaft at the front end thereof having a feed roll to feed the articles upwardly, a longitudinal feed screw in the bottom of the box or container, guide rods at opposite sides of said screw, a vertical follower mounted to slide on said guides, a vertical slide mounted on the follower-and at its lower end engaging said screw, pulleys on said shaft and feed screw and a belt connecting the pulleys.
5. In a delivery cabinet, the combination with a box or container having an outlet across the front end of its top, a transverse shaft having a feed roll to force the article up through said outlet, a longitudinal feed screw in the bottom of the box or container, a belt and pulley connection between the transverse shaft and front end of the feed screw, longitudinal guides at opposite sides of the feed screw, a vertical follower mounted at its lower ends on said guides, a vertical slide on the rear of the follower and formed at its lower end to operatively engage the feed screw, and a spring holding the said slide down to the screw.
6. The combination with a cabinet having a transverse slot across the front end of its top, of an open top box or container in the cabinet and provided with an inclined guide flange at its upper front end to guide the articles into the cabinet slot, a feed shaft having a pulley and a feed roll to feed the articles upwardly through said slot, means for operating the shaft exterior to the cabinet, a feed screw extending longitudinally of the box bottom and providedon its outer end with a pulley, a belt connecting said pulleys, and a vertical follower operatively' connected with the feed screw to hold a pack up to the feed roll.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
