UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EVERETT E. GOOLD, OFVICTOR, COLORADO; ASSIGNOR OE ONE-HALF TO C( JRNELITTS H.
VAN TILBORG, or ,vrcroa, COLQRADO.
AUTOMOBILE THROTTLE-LEVER LOCK.
T0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that T, Evnnn'rr E. Goons, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Victor, in the county of Teller and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automobile Throttle-Lever Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an automobile lever. lock, and particularly to a lock for the throttle or gasolene-supply-controlling levers of automobiles.
The object of the invention is to provide simple, reliable and eflicient means for looking the throttle lever in cut-off position, which lock can be released only by a person having a proper key.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and cluding the arcuate member or plate 2, and.
3 and 4 respectively designating the spark and throttle levers, the said levers being pivotally supported at their inner ends in the usual manner. connected with a sleeve 5 which encircles a rod 6, to which the inner end of the lever 4 is connected, said sleeve and rod being concentrically journaled in the usual steering post (not shown) of the vehicle.
The lever 4 has its outer end portion 7 projecting across and beyond the upper surface of the plate 2 and provided with an actuating knob or finger piece 8, whereby said lever may be adjusted along the curved plate to dilferent positions for rotating the rod 6 to control the feed of the motive fluid to the carbureter.
The lever 4 is provided with an expanded portion 9 having an opening 10 formed therein to receive a rotary tumbler 11 of a lock mechanism, the latter being preferably of the pin type, said tumbler being provided with a key receiving slot or passage 12 of As shown, the lever 3 is.
Specification of Letters Batent. Patented Oct 26, 192() Application filed October 4; 1919 Serial No. 328,410.
suitable form The lock mechanism is ar ranged within. a casing 13, formed upon or secured to the underside of the expanded portion 9, and said lock mechanism includes a bolt 14 adapted to be actuated by the rotation of the tumbler 11 through the medium of the inserted key.
The bolt 14 is adapted when in retracted position to have its outer end lie inwardly of the inner edge of the plate 2, thus allowing the lever 4 to be adjusted freely over said plate without interference from the lock mechanism for the purpose of controlling the feed'of the motive fluid in the usual way in the running of the car. The bolt is adapted to be projected by the rotary movement of the. tumbler to engage a locking notch or recess 15 formed in the inner edge of the plate 2. This locking notch or recess is sodisposed that when the lever 4 is in cut-out position the bolt may be pr0- jected to engage the recess 15 and thus lock the lever in such position, so that it can not be moved and hence the feed mechanism will be rendered inoperative for the supply of gasolene to the motor. 7
It will thus be understood that in prac- .tice' the owner or operator of the vehicle may employ. the throttle lever in the usual manner so long as it is free from looking engagement with the segment, but that the plate 2, while the end 7 of the lever 4 moves in guided contact with the upper surface of said plate, thus guiding the lever for movement in a true path. The lock casing is preferably provided with a lip or projection 16 to extend under and ride in contact-with the lower face of the plate 2, thus further insuring the accurate guiding of the lever in its movement and preventing the lever from being sprung upwardly when locked and thus obviating any liability of the projected bolt '14 being withdrawn from engagement with the notch 15 through such expedient. It will be observed that the con struetion is simple and inexpensive and of throttle lever and including a sliding bolt for engagement with the notch in said segment, and a rotary key-actuated tumbler, said tumbler being projected into an opening formed in the expanded portion of said throttle lever, and a projection carried by said lock casing and underlying the segment and cooperating with the outer end portion of said lever for maintaining the latter accurately in its path of travel to and from the off position aforesaid.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature EVERETT E. GOOLD.
