COLLAPSIBLE FOOT-MEASURING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1920.
Application filed November 25, 1919. Serial No. 340,520.
TocZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRIET BA'r'rEsE DAWKlNS, citizen of North Carolina,
U. S. A. residin at Charlotte 111 the count 1' of Mcoklenburg and State of North (Jaroina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Foot-Measuring Devices, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to measuring devices, particularly to those designed for use by the shoe dealers for measuring a foot to determine the proper sizeshoe therefor, and has for its object the provision of a foot measuring device which is formed of a plurality of slidably connected sections whereby the device may be readily extended for use or collapsed so as to occupy but little space so that it may be carried in the pocket of the salesman, one end portion of the device being formed as a receptacle which inclosingly receives the remaining sections when in collapsed position, certain of the sections being graduated in shoe sizes.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly eiiicient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
Vith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the device in extended position,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating the slidable connection of the sections,
Fig. 4c is a cross sectional view,
Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of the heel engaging end section,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the device in collapsed position, and
Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view therethrough.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown my device as comprising an end section 10 which is formed as a hollow body having one edge open and cut away, as shown at 11, with this cut away portion provided with a recess 12 at each side of the device. Disposed within and tures being the collapsible sections.
adapted to extend beyond the open edge of this hollow section, is a plate section 13 which has its rear cornersbearing mem bers l3 slidably engaging within guide slots 13" in the member 10 and which has its side edges formed with guide slots let. tBlidably connected with this plate section 13 1s a section 15 which is the endmost one of a plurality of similar sections 16, 17,18 and 19 all of which are provided at their edges with guide slots 20 similar to the guide slots 14: and the successive sections have at their edges, bearing members 21 slidably engaging the uide slots 20, yet this connection is such fiiat when the sections are in extended position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the device will possess proper rigidity so as to avoid buckling. Slidably connected with the section 19 is a section 22 which is provided with laterally extending ears 23 at its ends and which is provided upon one face with an upstanding projection 24 hav-. ing an arcuate face This curved face 25 is adapted to be engaged by the heel of the foot-to be measured. I
The sections have inscribed thereon longitudinal lines 26 across and beyond which extend transverse lines 27 which designate the whole sizes of shoes, and between these transverse lines 27 are other transverse lines 28 indicating the half sizes. At the ends of the transverse lines 27 are inscribed numerals indicating the sizes while each trans verse line 28 has inscribed acent thereto the legend 1}.
In the use of the device it will be seen that when the parts are in extended position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the customer places his foot upon the extended sections with his heel engaging the curved face 25 of the projection 24;. At whatever transverse line 27 or 28 the toe of the foot termi nates will indicate the proper shoe size. These shoe scales are in themselves well known and the present device does not claim novelty in this particular, the novel fea- When the use of the device is not desired, it will be seen that by pressing against the endmost sections 10 and 22, all the sections will slide one upon the other andthey will all be disposed within the hollow section -10 with the. outer straight face of the section 22 forming a closure for the hollow section 10. The laterally projecting ears 23 on the, section are 22 are for the purpose of afiording a grip whereby the section 22 may be grasped to pull all the sections out of the section 10 and the recess 12 is also for the purpose of permitting a grip on the section 22. It will be observed that the sections 15, 16, 17, 19'
and 22 are of progressively increasing length so as to compensate for the thickness of the bearing members 21 so that all the sections will fit snugly Within the hollow section 10. a
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it Will be apparent that I have thus provided a simple and efiicient device which may be readily extended for use in measuring a foot to determine the shoe size and which may be readily collapsed into small compass for convenience in storage Within the pocket.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form,
construction, and arrangement of parts as Will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A device of the character described comprising a plurality of slidably connected sections each formed as a plate having near its lateral edges guide slots and the adjacent plate carrying bearing members engaging said slots, one endrnost section being formed hollow to serve as a container for the other sections When collapsed, and the other endmost section serving as a closure for the first named endmost section, a projection on said second named endrnost section having a curved face for engagement by the heel of a foot, and the intermediate sections being inscribed with graduations indicating shoe sizes.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HARRIET BATTESE DAVVKINS.
