PATENT THOMAS HERSEY, OF BANGOR, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOCCASINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,548, dated February 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HEnsEY, of Bangor, in the county ot' Penobscot and. Sta-te ot' Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Moccasins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make land use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a front view ofthe moccasin Fig. 2, a rear vicw of the lap and tongue; Fig. 3, an edge view.
Same lettersshow like parts.
My invention has for its object the producftion of a moccasin which shall be so constructed as to exclude dirt from the feet ot the wearer and at the same time secure economy ot' material and labor. I attain my object in a simple vet effectual manner, by securing to the outside of the tongue a front lap in such a manner as to form pockets between the said tongue and lap, into which the quarters ofthe moccasin are inserted. It is then secured upon the foot by strings, buckles, or similar devices attached to both lap` and quarter.
Reference to the drawing shows my method of securing the lap to the qua-rter and its attachment to the shoe.
A shows the Inoccasin; b, the tongue; and d, the front lap, fastened to the tongue by stitches e extending across the front, and at f by a row of perpendicular stitches' through the middle of both lap and tongue, forming the pockets g g on each side. Ath h h are eyelet-holes, buckles, or other devices for fastenin g the shoe. The quarters cbeinginserted in the pockets gg, the inoccasin is fastened up, drawing the lap smoothly across the front ot the shoe presenting a plain surface, and ati t'ording no lodging place for dirt., or it' any enters it is retained by the pockets, and gains no admittance inside ot' the tongue.
It will be seen that niy invention can be easily applied to the ordinary shoe of tanned leather with equally good eiect.
l do not claim a lap-pieceseparate from both the quarters and buttoning thereto, as shown in Joseph Bracketts patent ot' September 28, 1852; nor do I claim a tlap arranged to overlap a second tlap on the front ot' the shoe, as in the patent ot' J. Goykendall, issued September 6, 1870; nor the devices shown in J. B. Fields patent ot' January 10, 1&72. None ot' these cases show a front lap and ordinary tongue combined, much less the pockets, which are the distinguishing characteristics of my invention, and which receive the quarters between said lap and tongue, ettectually preventing dirt from reaching the foot, since even it' it enter the pockets it is checked by the tongue.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a moccasin or shoe the pockets g g, formed, as described, by the combination of a front lap, d, and ordinary tongue b, united by stitches f, substantially as set forth and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of November, 1872.
THOMAS HERSEY.
