W, WILSON.
SewinQ-Machihe Table-Tops.
i AMPHara-muosfwmc muwmaanussrfeacsss) Y UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
WILLIAM WTILSON, OF MADISON, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT` IN SEWING'MACHINE-TABLE TOPS.
i Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,392, dated January 2S, 1873.
To all whom it may eo'ncem:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WILsoN, of Madison, in the county of J eft'erson and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Removable Tops for Sewing-Machine Tables, of which the following is a specification:
My improvement consists in providing an ordinary permanent table with a removable supplementary top, by means of which the said table is enlarged in superficial area, said removable top being supported solely by the molding on the outer edge of the permanent top.
In the drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of my invention in the plane of the line a :v in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 .is a plan of the same.
A represents the permanent top of a table, and B the removable top. In the drawing I have shown the said removable top eut in two, and the parts hinged together, because I consider'this method of construction preferable to making the top of one piece, without hinges. It may be made of one or two pieces cut lengthwise or orosswise, as desired, this being simply a question of convenience. The permanent top has a projecting molding of any desired contour eut on its outer edge, and the movable top has an opening cut in it which corresponds, in size and configuration, to the permanent top, the inner edge of said supplementaryftable-top being undercut with a reverse molding to t the molding on the permanent top. It is found advisable, in practice, to cut the opening a little larger than will neatly fit, and' to supply the deiiciency with a strip of felt, or other soft material, glued to the surface of the reverse molding, lhis is to avoid marring the molding on the permanent top, and to prevent rattling. The removable top is held in its position by buttons G O, or their equivalents, located and operated substantially as designated in the drawing.
When the top B is cut and hinged it may be folded up compactly, and is not so liable to be broken as when made'in one piece.
By the use of my supplementarytop la large area for the support of the goods to be sewed is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A removable supplementary top for sewingmachine tables, when the said top B is supported solely by a projecting molding on the outer edge ofthe permanent table-top A, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM WILSON.
