PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. LAYTQN, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS.
i 'OIL KIT.
Specification of Letters Iatent. Patented Sept. 28, 1920.
Application led June 7, 1920. Serial No. 387,049.
T all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMns W..LAYT0N, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have inventedl a new and useful Oil Kit, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in oil kits such as are used by locomotive engineers and others.
The purposes of the invention are: to provide a portable kit comprising a vcarrying case or container, an engineers torch, an engineers oil can, and a bucket containing a supply of oil, all compactly arranged and locked to prevent unauthorized use of the articles; to provide alockable-case of improved construction adapted to contain and prevent displacement of the several articles; to provide in conjunction with. an oil bucket having a bail, means whereby the bail of the oil bucket may be utilized to carry the kit; and to provide means for holdingr the torch in such position that it may be lighted without taking it from the case.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawing to which reference i's hereby made and will now be described and the novel features thereof will be recited in the claims.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a kit embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 2. 2. of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on the line 3. 3. of Fig. 1. The same reference numerals designate the same parts in all the views.
The case, which will be preferably made of galvanized sheet metal, comprises a bottom plate 4, having upturned side members 5 and upturned end members 6; angular corner posts 7, 8, 9 and 10 permanently attached to the members 5 and 6; a side plate 12 permanently attached to the upper ends of the corner posts 7 and 8 and extending upwardly somewhat above the upper ends f of the posts; a `side rail 13 permanently attached at the upper ends Vof the posts 9 and 10; a. cross plate 14 permanently attached at the upper ends of the posts 8 and 10; a cross piece 15 permanently attached at the upper ends of the posts 7 and 9; and a cover 16 having a downwardly turned longitudinal member 17 and a downwardly turned end member 18. The member 18 has a hole y20 in line with a hole 19 in the cross plate 14. A, padlock 21 has "a shackle 22 which occupies the holes 19 `and 2O and connects the cover with the case. An upright 41 permanently att-ached to the plate 12 and one member 5 of the plate 4, and an upright 42 permanently. attached to the side rail 13 and the opposite member 5 of the plate 4, stiifen the frame. .Y Y
A bucket 24 to contain a supply of oil, restson the bottom 4. The bucket has a conicalV part 25 whicli'extends upwardly through an opening 23 in the cover 16. The diameter of the opening 23 is less than the diameter of the body of the bucket and will not admit of lifting the bucket out wardly through the opening. A bail 27 hooks into ears 26'stationary on the part 25 and is usable to carry the kit. The cover 16 has an opening 28 adapted to accommodate the outwardly extended neck 3() and the outwardly extended filler-tube 31 of the oil can 29. The diameter of the opening 28 is less than the diameter of the body of the oil can 'and does not admit of with-v drawing the can through the opening.
Each of the rear corner posts 7 and 9 has an upwardly extended member 32 hav ing a. hole 83. Fingers 34 secured on the cover 16 extend through the respective holes and prevent lifting of the cover.
On the under side of the cover 16 is a stationary hood 35 in the form of a truncated cone, which surrounds the screw-cap 38 of the torch 37 and prevents displacement of the torch within the case. The torch is such as is commonly used by locomotive engineers. Here it is to be noted'that the torch is so situated in the case that its wick tube 39 projects outwardly beyond the end of the case in such position that the wick 40 may be easily lighted without removing the torch from the case. The described posi tion of the torch relative to the case and the lock is of practical value, because it will often be necessary to use the kit at night, and in that case the flame of the torch will A illuminate the lock 21 so that it may be conveniently unlocked and detached from the case, thus affording access to the utensils containedin the case.
The mode of using thekit is as follows: The cover 16 having been first detached, the bucket 24, the can 29 and the torch 37 will be placed on the ioor 4 in proper relation to each other, substantially as shown; the cover 16V will be placed in suchV position that the part will project upwardly through the opening 23 and the parts 30 and 3l will project upwardly through the opening 28'; the cover will then be slid to the right to cause' the fingers 34 to engage in the holes 33 ofV the members 32'and to cause the hole20 to register'with the hole 19; the shackle 22 of the lock 2l will then be inserted throughV the holes20 and; 19 and itsv free end will be in'serted in the lockand the lock will then be 'locked to securely connect the parts. To remove the-'utensils from the case, the procedure jiust described will be reversed. Y
' It is' obvious that minor details of construction may be varied ,without departure from invention. I therefore do not restrict theclaims tojthe precise details of 'const'ructionherein set forth, .but wish .to
availmyselt of such minor variationsv as are within the scope of my invention.
Havingfully described my invention, whatA I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
