Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 21, 1920.
Application filed Deceinber 27, 1918. Serial No. 268,572. g
which is or are more particularly adapted to 7 form supports for the use of those persons having infirmities, artificial limbs, and the like. Such supports are advantageously provided with vertical adjustment means for enabling the required height to be regulated, as also in a horizontal direction in such a manner as to enable the position to be adjusted in relation to the water-closet seat.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had'to the appended sheet of drawings, upon which Figure 1 is a part section through 'a Water-closet basin illustrating the supports in position.
Fig. 2 is a plan of Fig. 1.
In an embodiment of this invention a pair of iron hangers a a are provided, the upper end of each of which are of clip or hook formation a which clips or hooks or, are adapted to engage with the insideof the top roll or lip 72 of the Water-closet basin 5; these hangers a, a are adapted to be suspended on each side of the water-closet basin h, the vertical part a of each hanger is preferably shaped to fit against the outside of the basin 5, and is channel shaped at its lower end a to receive a blockc, which block is preferably of a similar c'urve or plan to that of the exterior curve of the basin 6. Each block 0 is provided with three vertical perforations 0 of circular cross section, these three perforations are connected together by a vertical slot 0 The lower part 01 of each crutch support at is formed of avertical bar having a cir-, cular enlargement d which fits into one of the aforementioned holes in the block, the
part 03 of the bar above the block being cranked outwardly, above each crank the bar is provided with a tubular socket e in whichvthe stem 7 of the crutchor support f is made to telescope, so as to enable the height of the crutch or support to be ad- Ijusted, a series of perforations f being made in the stem of the crutch with a perforation e in the'tubular socket for permitting of the crutch support being secured at varying heights as desired. 7
By reason of the crank formation 03 of the supporting bar and the freedom of the enlargement d to turn in the vertical perforation in the block 0, it will be'seen that the upper or supporting part of the crutch can be adjusted in position by the pivot action of the lower part cl'of the bar in the block, a further adjustment may be effected by raising the bar support until theenlargement d is clear of the perforation c in the vblock c and thensliding the parts of the bar having a smaller diameter than the enlargement 03 along the slot 0 which forms a passage from one vertical perforation c to the other, and then dropping the enlargement 1 into the perforation at that point, the extreme end of the bar being providedwith a suitable washer or nut 01* to prevent the bar support from being entirely 1 withdrawn from the block. 7
It will be seen that as the crutch supports (Z are cranked out at (i from the basin 5 that any weight WhlChl/l'le crutches have to support has a tendency to retain the hanger a against the sides of the basin, which 1 Y thereby takes up a portion of the strain. f
The upper part of the crutch supports 7 may be padded and shaped to fit 'under'the arm-pit, or may be shaped to'form grips or rests for the hand or elbow.
What I claim as my invention anddesire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a water closets basin having a hinged cover, a crutch, hand 7 or armpit support having means to suspend pending means comprising a hanger having clips to engage the top of the wall of the basin, below the cover.
2. In combination with a water closet basin having a hinged cover, a crutch, hand or armpit. support having means to suspend the same directly from the basin, said suspending means compnsing a hanger having clips to engage the top of the wall of the basin, below the cover, said suspending 10 means being laterally adjustable on the basin.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presenceof two witnesses.
WILLIAM JOHN HEGARTY. Witnesses JOHN H. E. MoANDREws, l/VILLIAM A. KELLEHER.
