' BUTTON DEVICE,
APPLICATION FILED AUG-.27.1919- 1,353,725 ratendsept. 21,1920.
ARTHUR R. Fonns'rnn, citizens of the Unitedy SAMUEL COHEN D ARTHUR B). FUER/STER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.l
BUTTON DEVICE.
Application filed August 27, 1919i SeralNo. 320,114.
To aZZ 'whom t may concern: g
Be it known that we, SAMUEL COHEN and States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of .New York, have invented certain newand useful L Improvements in Button Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in thel art to which it appertains'to make and use the same.
This invention relatesto button devices and particularly to what are known as colv discoloring or poisoning of the neck vof the wearer as well as to prevent the binding and pinching of the neck of the wearer in` the use of the collar button; and with this and other objects in view the invention con.n sists in al device of the class and for the purpose specified, constructed and operating as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, ofwhich the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each ofthe views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view ofone of our improvedcollar buttons showing the same on an enlarged scale;
Fig; 2 a central longitudinal section through the complete button; and,
Figj3 aview similarto Fig. 2 but showing only al detail of the construction and showing such detail on an enlarged scale.
In practice, we provide a main button `member 5 which vis of the usual general form and preferably composedwof sheet` metal fashioned to formv a hollow and approximately spherical' head 6, avreduced neck y7 and an enlarged base 8, the bottomy 9V of vrwhich is provided with a central opening 10.
A supplemental button member 11 is loosely mounted in connection with the main 'button member'` and comprises inner and outer disks 12 and 13, the diskv 13 being of slightly 'greater diameter than the disk 12, Y and theseV disks aresecured together by a central shank portion v14l which passes through and is adapted to operate in the aperture 10.
Mounted on, the disk'13-of the supplemental button member 11 is an outer fibrous specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sepitl, 1920.
of the disk 13 in the form of an annular flange 18 which is approximately hookshapcd in form in cross section. j.
In securing the fibrous sheet 15 in connection with the disk 13, a suitable padding19 is first placedv between said sheet and disk 16, this padding being preferably composed of sponge rubber but may be composed of any other suitable padding material. After the padding 19 has been placed in position,
around the periphery of the flange 17 of the disk 16 in the manner illustrated Ain `dotted lines in Fig. 3, after which the disk 13 is placed within the cup-shaped disk 16 and the edge'portions ofthe sheet 15 are folded' the flange 17 bent overand around the periphery of the vdisk -13 'as hereinbefore stated and as clearly shown in Fig, 3. i v.
The above operation securely binds the fibrous or fabric sheet 15 in connectionwith the disk13 ofthe supplemental button member 11 and holds the padding 19 in proper position on the outer face of the disk 13.- It will belseen that the disk 12 of the supplementali button member is free tom`ovel laterally as well as inwardly and outwardly 1.
within the buttonmember 5, orthe base 8 thereof, and is yalso free to rotate therein.
Wealso preferably employ a spiral spring l2() which is placed in the base 8 ofthe button 5 and operates between the reducedneck 7 of the button member 5 and the disk 12Iof` the supplemental ,button member 11.
It will be understood that our improved button device, in addition, to its free `and unbinding action when in use is also sani-k ,p
tary in use and by using a suitable padding 15 on-the outer facek of the ysupplemental kbutton member 11, said buttonmember will tend'to vabsorb any moisture that/may be present and will prevent the discoloring of .l
the -neck'of the wearer, and said supplemental button member will freely move within the buttonpmember 5 in the twisting or turning of the neck, and will always adjust itself to a positionv which will be comfortable to thewearer. lt will also-be apparent that while 'we have shown the supplemental but- .tonV memberl applied to a specific form and construction ofjthe main button member 5,
our invention is not necessarilylimited to this extent, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A device of the class described comprising a main button member having a head at vone end and an enlarged and hollow base at the other end thereof, and a supplemental button member comprising two heads joined by a shank, one of the heads of the supplemental button member being ,mounted in the hollow base of the main button member and permanently retained therein in such manner as to permit of lateral, rotatable and inward and outward movements of said supplemental button member in the main button member.
2. A device of the class described comprising aV main button member and a supplemental button member loosely mounted in connection with the base portion of said main button member, and the outer face of said supplemental button member being provided with a fibrous covering.
3. A device of the class described com.- prisi'ng a main button member and a supplemental button member loosely mounted in connection with thek base portion of saidv main button member, and the outer face of said supplemental button member being provided with a fibrous covering between which and the face of said supplemental button member is a suitable padding.
4. A device of the class described comprising a main button member, a supplemental button member loosely mounted in connection with the base portion of the main button member, and a spring mounted within the main button member and adapted to normally move the supl'ilen'iental button member outwardly. Y
5. A device of the 'class vdescribed comprising a main button member, a supplemental button member loosely mounted in connection with the base portion of the main button member, a spring mounted within the main button member and adapted to normally move the supplemental button member outwardly, and means on said supplemental button member for holding it against detachment from said main'button member.
6. A device of the class described comprising a main button member, a supplemental button member loosely mounted in connection with the base portion of the main button member, a spring mounted within the main button member and adapted to normally move the supplemental button member outwardly, and means on said supplemental button member for holding it against detachment from said main button member and the protruding portion of said supplemental button member being provided with a fabric covering.
7. A device of the class described comprising a main button member, a supplemental button member loosely mounted in connection with the base portion of the main. button member, a spring mounted within the main button member and adapted to normally move the'supplemental button lmember outwardly, means on said supplemental button member for holding it against detachment from said'main button member and the protruding portion of said supplemental button member being provided with a fabric covering, and means for securing said covering in connection with said supplemental button member.
8. A device of the classV described comprising a main button member, a supplemental button member loosely mounted in connection with the base portion of the main button member, a spring mounted within the main button member and adapted to normally move the supplen'lent'al button member outwardly, means on said supplemental button member for holding it against detacl'nnent from said main button iember and the protruding portion of said supplemental button member being provided with a fabric covering, means for securing said covering in connection with said supplemental button member, and a suitable padding mounted within said fabric coverin Y i 9. A collar button of the class described comprising a main button member, a supplemental button member comprising two disks joined by a reduced neck portion, one of said disks being permanently retained within the base portion of the main button member and freely movable therein, and the other of said disks being provided with a fibrous covering.
10. A device of the class described com-- prising a main button member vconsisting of a head,ra Ashank and a hollow base, and a supplemental button member loosely and permanently. mounted in the hollow base of the main button member and .provided outwardly of said base with a disk-shaped head.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names in presence of the subscribing witn nesses this 26th day rof August 1919.
