' T allwhom it may concern:
7 Beit known'that I, EDWARD A. T. HoLDEN, a c1t1zen of the United States,'residin at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and S tate of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Scrapers, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to scrapers and has special reference to a grain scraper such as are commonly employed about grain elevators in unloading grain from cars, emptying bins in the elevators and the like. a I Such scrapers are usually made of wood, are drawn when scraping by a power actuated bridle, and controlled manually by suitable handles near the upper edge thereof.
It is found in practice that these scrapers are subjected to considerable abuse by bumping against fixed parts of the car in which they are used and against the sides of the openings in either a car or bin as the case may be.
This causes frequent breakage, necessitating quite extensive repairs and frequently entire renewal.
The parts of the scraper most frequently broken are the comparatively narrow side pieces, and when these are badly damaged it often requires taking the entire scraper apart, and as before stated results in quite an extensive and expensive'operation. To avoid this and increase the life as well as to some extent the capacitv of the scraper is the principal object of this invention.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the further description thereof.
The accompanying drawing forming part of this application is a perspective view of one of the improved scrapers.
7 Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 1 and 2 represent the boards forming the flat bottom of the scraper. 3
is the upper edge board which is inclined outwardly from the interior of the scraper and to which the controlling handles 4: are attached. 5 and 6 are the bottom nose boards which are inclined upwardly from the board 1. and. the board 5 carries suitable hooks 7 to which the pulling bridle,
not shown, is attached. All these are as commonly found on each scrapers and .none
body the novel features.
: Specification of Letters Patent; 1 Patented sad But the side boardsof the scraper em upper metal-holding portion of the sides and 9 the wooden nose pieces or lower portions thereof.
The holders 8 are of straight flat pieces of sheet metal having inwardly projecting edges turned at right angles thereto form ing a continuous flange 10 entirely about the edges thereof "except on the end toward the nose of'the scraper, and into which open end 8 represents the the upper end of the wooden nose pieces v9 are fitted and secured by suitablethrough bolts 11. The upper or inner ends of the nose pieces are rounded off as at 12 to pre vent obstruction to the ready discharge of grain and the bottom and'nose boards 1, 5 and 6 are fastened to the underedges of the board 9 by screw nails as is customary.
inside of the flanges 10 of the metal holders by suitable bolts, some of which are indicated at 13,. and the uppermost corners of the holders are inclined downwardly as at 14 for better appearance and improvement in shape generally.
From. the foregoing it is evident that if any one or more of the nose boards become broken or badly worn, they may be readily replaced without disassembling the whole scraper. and that the upper portion ofthe metal and wooden side nose pieces fitted into the lower ends of the metal holding pieces and to which latter the bottom nose boards are attached.
2. A scraper of the character described composed principally of wood and having main side pieces composed of sheet metal, flanged inwardlly and firmly bindingfthe major portion of the parts of the scraper together. I
