citizen of the United States,and a resident of Cape-Girardeau, in the county ofCape Girardeau and State of Missouri have made certain new and useful Improvements in Spark and Throttle Lever Locks, of which ticularly to a device of this nature described and claimed, in my application No. 326168, filed in the U. S. Patent Office September 25, 1919.
Among the various objects of my present improvements I aim to provide a device capable of ready adjustment to fit spark and throttle levers of slightly different spacing, and a further object is the. provision of an arrangement which may be looked without the necessity of a separate pad-lock, as in my previous application.
A still further object is the provision of an arrangement wherein means are incorporated to avoid danger of, defeating the purposes of a look by unwarranted opening of the quadrant and shifting movements of. the spark and throttle levers beneath the lock plate.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my present invention Figure 1 is a horizontal section through the steering post below the gear casing, illustrating the practical application of my improvements, in locked position.

Referring now to these figures, I have indicated the steering post of a Ford automobile at 10 in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The usual gear casing 11 is shown in Fig. 2 in its normal spaced relation above the quadrant 12, over which the spark lever 13 and. throttle lever 14 work in opposite directions. As
well known, the quadrant projeotslaterally from the steering post and has at two ends upright lugs 15 whlch form stops ,for'the levers 13-and lt'when in the fully retarded:

and closed positions of these levers, which may, for the purposes'of the present invention, be termed their inactive position.
As in my application above referred to, the locking mechanism includes a lock plate 1.6 of somewhat the shape of the quadrant 12 arranged to seat on the quadrant with one edge opposing movement-of the two levers 13 and 14 when the latter are in inactive positions, and my present improvements propose that the said lever opposing edge of the lock plate 16 be provided Wltli" extended leverengaging portions 17 adjacent to the sides of the lock plate, so that in case the lock plate cannot be properly seated on the quadrant when in engagement with the levers, these extended portions 17 may be partially ground or filed away without necessitating grinding or filing of the entire lever opposing ed e of the plate.
As in my application above referred to,
the lock plate 16 has upper recesses 18 in which the inner portions of locking arms 19 are adapted to swing, the-inner ends of these arms being journaled vertically through the plate at 20, and their .outer. ends being in accordance with my present improvements,
provided with flatwise abutting enlargements 21 adapted to contain. any suitable form of look by which to effectively secure the same in fiatwise abutting relation when closed, as in Fig. 1. This lock may include a barrel 22 having a key slot 28, as seenin Fig. 2, and in any event a self contained lock structure is contemplated for-thelocking arms so as to avoid the necessity of a separate'padelock, as in my previous apph- 1 cation.
In Figs. 3 plate, which is otherwise the same as in Figs. 1 and 2, provided with spaced lower lugs 2 1 of the angular form, particularly seen in Fig. 4, adapted for engagement beneath portions of the edge of the quadrant 12 adiacent to theinactive positions of the levers 13 and 1 1, so that with the lock plate 16 seated upon the quadrant and these lugs extending beneath portions of the quadrant,

It is thus obvious that in respect to the 1 oortions of the device sneciiicall Y referred to above, my present invention is an improvement over my application first referred to along lines calculated to bring about more effective, efficient results in practical use.
I claim V 1. The combination with a steering post,
control levers and quadrant on which the said levers work, of a securing member including a body plate seatable on the quadrant with one edge opposing the control levers in their inactive positions, movable arms carried by the said body plate and shiftable into embracing relations around the steering post, and means for locking the arms aroundthe steering post, said lever opposing edge of said body plate having extensions adjacent to its opposite sides proectlng beneath the levers 1n inactive positions for the purpose stated.
2. The combination with a steering pest, control levers and quadrant on which the said levers work, of a securing member including a body plate seatable on the quadrant with one edge opposing the control levers in their inactive positions, movable arms carried by the said body plate and shiftable into embracing relation around the steering post, means for locking the arms around the steering post, and means carried by the body plate and arranged to prevent the control levers from being forced downwardly beneath the body plate for shifting movement below the said body plate.
3. The combination with a steering post, control levers and quadrant on which the said levers work, of a securing member including a body plate seatable on the quadrant with one ed e opposing the control levers in their inactive positions, movable arms carried by the said body plate and shiftable into embracing relation around the steering post, means for locking the arms around the steering post, means carried by the body plate and arranged to prevent the control levers from being forced downwardly beneath the body plate for shifting movement below the said body plate, said means being in the form of lugs projecting from the body plate, as described.
