LOCKING DEVICE.
Application filed June 30, 1923.' Serial No. 648,703.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LINCOLN TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to locking devices for preventing the illicit tampering with, and starting up of, movable parts on motive mechanism when left unattended, and it has -more particular reference to keyless devices of the permutationtype; the primary object being to provide a device of the foregoing specified character which is particularly though not essentiallyeadaptable for looking the transmission of motor propelled vehicles.
Another object of this invention is to provide a keyless permutation lock of the kind referred to that embodies the essential prerequisites of security, strength, durability and simplicity.
a A further object of my invention is to pro-- vide a keyless safety locking device of the type described in which there is no danger of disturbing the relative arrangement of the rotatable permutation elements, so that anipulation of one such element will not simultaneously disturb anotheror the others.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a locking device that can be promptly applied to the gear shift of an automobile transmission, whereby said gear shift is locked in neutral position and cannot be unlocked by an unauthorized person. Other objects and advantages associated with my invention will become more apparent from the following description, which is a full, clear, and exact outline of one practical embodiment such as will enable those conversant with the art to which said invention appertains to make and use the same.
In the further disclosure of this invention reference Will be made to the accompanying sheet of drawings constituting a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference designate the same or corresponding parts in all the views.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the transmission case containing the high and intermediate sliding gear 6, as well as the low and reverse sliding gear 7 said gears being adapted for movement by a shifter fork 8 operable by the control lever 9 in the Well known way, while the clutch pedal is characterized by the numeral 10. All of the aforesaid parts are briefly referred to for a clearer understanding of the specific application of my present invention shown and now to be describedin detail.
In" carrying out my invention and in accordance with its adaptation to the form of transmission illustrated itwill be seen that the novel locking device, generally referred to hereafter by the numeral 11, is mounted and immovably secured in any appropriate manner by means of an axial tubular extension 12 into a lug or laterally projecting abutment 13 integral within the transmission case cover 14. The aforesaid locking device 11, as will be best seen from Figures II, III and IV comprises a substantially oblong upper portion 15, integral with an in termediate part 16 of circular or other appropriate cross-section; and the tubular extension 12 above referred to. Thus it will be seen that the locking device 11 embodies three component parts, namely the upper portion 15 which is provided with a plurality of parallel transverse clefts 17 for a predetermined extent.
17 are a series of rotatable permutation elements 18, that are centrally perforated at19 and provided with key-ways 20 to permit the entry of a locking pin 21. This pin 21 is provided with a plurality of radially projecting aligned and interval spaced feather key parts 22 adapted for passage throughv or look the device 11, each rotating permutation element 18 is formed with a mutilated serration or notch 27Figure IV-capable when turned in a contra-clockwise direction of locking against the corresponding spring I urged ball 2A1, and from this zero position all of the permutation elements 18 are rotated ina clockwise direction the required and Obviously the permutationelements 18 may be rotated in a reverse or contra-clockwise direction dependent upon the direction in which the ball engaging notches 27 are faced when assembling the device.
I The: aforesaid locking pin 21 is provided with a -manipulating knob 21, and it is fslidably housed in an axial passage28 extending through the oblong upper portion 15 into communication with the bore 29 of the tubular extension 12. In the drawings the pin 21 isshown as eccentrically disposed relative to the bore 29 and in engagement with-the upper end of a reciprocable transmission locking member 30, but it will'be readily understood that said eccentricity is only for compactness in design. The transmission locking member 30 is slidably mounted at its lower part in a second lug or abutment 31-Fig. I-in spaced relation to the lug or abutment'13, and it is provided with a movement limiting collar 32, between which and the said lug or abutment 31 is a spring 33 under compression that normally tends to urge the lockin member 80 up wards, or into the unlockec position. In use it will be readily seen that by rotating the several permutation elements 18 the predetermined number'of degrees from the zero position, or until their respective keyways 20 are all in register, the locking pin 21 canbe withdrawn ormoved just sufficiently for the plurality of featherkeys to be free of said keyways 20. In order to limit the movement of the said locking pin 21 I employ a set screw or the like 34 for cooperation with a notched out fiat portion 35 of said pin 21, the function of which will be perfectly obviousto those acquainted with the art without further explanation or description.
From the foregoing it will be observed that there are no unsightly projections beyond the walls of the locking device 11, while the.respectivepermutation elements 18 can be manipulated with the finger and thumb quite easily. Still further my invention provides a locking device that can not easily be put out of commission or illicitly unlocked.
If for any reason it is found desirable to change the combination of my improved locking device the same can be readily accomplished by firstly withdrawing the screw 34 suflicient for the-locking pin or keeper 21 to be withdrawn, whereupon the respective permutation elements 18 may be transposed as desired, and the screw 34 subsequently replaced. I
Obviously when the locking pin 21 is released as above set forth, the transmission locking member 30 will be automatically disengaged fromcooperative relation with the shifter fork 8 under the action of thespring 33. On the other hand downward pressure on the manipulating knob.21" of the looking pin 21 will effect the projection of the member into lockingrelation with the shifter fork, whereupon. the breaking of the combination will retain the parts 21, 30 elfectively held and locked against unauthorized release.
From the above descriptionit will be seen that I have produced a permutation lock which is simple, strong, durable, and inexpensive in construction, and also capable of application to a great variety of situations. Further, that it is impossible for anyone to tamper with the lock and retract the locking pin 21 without first knowing the exact combination at which the lock is set.
Havingthus described my invention, I .claim: i I v v I 1. A locking device of the character described comprising a'frame member having a series of transverse clefts and a tubular attaching extension, a passage through said clefts at right angles thereto and provided -with radial keyway s, a pin provided with a corresponding series of keybits traversing said passage, a related co -axial series of serrated locking elements positioned in the transverse clefts and rotatable about the pin in one direction from a zero datum,a series of cooperative clicks and a spring influenced bolt member slidable in the tubular extension for projection in one" direction by the aforesaid pin into locking position, andautomatic retraction therefrom when the pin is released. i
' 2.'A locking dev'ce of'the characterv described comprising a frame member having .a series'of transverse clefts and a tubular attaching extension, a passage through said clefts at right angles thereto and provided with aligning keyways, a lock-pin having a corresponding-series of key bits adapted to traverse said passage, means for limiting longitudinal movement of the lock-pin, a related co-axial series of serrated locking elements positioned in the transverse clefts and rotatable on the lock-pin in one direction from a zero position, a corresponding series of co-operative clicks and a spring influenced bolt member slidable in the tubular extension adapted for projection in one direction by the lock-pin into locking position and automatic retraction therefrom when the aforesaid lock-pin is released.
3. A locking device of the character described comprising a frame member including an oblong portion, a shouldered center part, and a tubular attaching extension, said oblong portion having a series of transverse clefts, a passage through said clefts at right angles thereto and provided with aligning keyways, a bolt-pin adapted to traverse said passage and having a corresponding series of key bits, means for limiting longitudinal movement of the bolt-pin, a related co-axial series of serrated locking elements positioned in the transverse clefts and rotatable about the lock-pin in one direction from a mutilated zero serration, a corresponding series of co-operative clicks, and a spring influenced bolt member slidable in the tubular extension adapted for projection in one direction by the lock-pin into operative position, and automatic retraction therefrom when the aforesaid lock-pin is released.

A locking device of the character de scribed comprising a frame member including an oblong portion, a shouldered center part, and a tubular attaching extension, said oblong portion having a series of transverse clefts, a passage through said clefts at right angles thereto and provided with aligning keyways, a lock-pin adapted to traverse said passage and having a corresponding series of key-bits, a related c0- axial series of serrated locking elements positioned in the transverse clefts and rotatable about the lock-pin in one direction from a mutilated zero serration, a corresponding series of co-operative springurged clicks, and aspring influenced bolt member slidable in the tubular extension adapted for projection in one direction by the aforesaid lock-pin into operative position and automatic retraction therefrom when the lock-pin is released, said spring influenced bolt member being disposed axially eccentric with respect to the lock-pin.

A locking device of the character described comprising a frame member including an oblong portion, a shouldered center part, and a tubular attaching extension, said oblong portion having a series of transverse clefts, a passage through said clefts at right angles thereto and provided with aligning keywajys, a lock-pin slidable in said passage and having a corresponding series of key bits, a related co-axial series of serrated locking elements positioned in the transverse clefts and rotatable about the locking pin in one direcion from a Zero position, spring influenced clicks co-operative with the serrated locking elements, and a spring influenced bolt member slidable in the tubular extension adapted for rojection in one direction by the lock-pin into operative position and automatic retraction therefrom when the lock-pin is released, said spring influenced bolt member being disposed axially eccentric with respect to the lock-pin.
6. The combination with the transmission of a motor propelled vehicle and the case cover thereof of a locking device, comprising a frame member including an oblong portion, a shouldered center part, and a tu bular attaching extension, said oblong portion having a series of transverse clefts, a passage through the said clefts at right angles thereto and provided with aligning key- Ways, a lock-pin movable in said passage and having a corresponding series of key bits, a related co-axial series of peripherally toothed locking elements positioned in the transverse clefts and rotatable about the locking pin in one direction from a zero position spring influenced clicks co-operative with the peripherally toothed locking ele ments, and a spring influenced bolt member slidable in the tubular extension adapted for projection in one direction by the lockpin into operative position and automatic retraction therefrom when said lock-pin is released, said spring influenced bolt member being disposed axially eccentric with respect to the lock-pin.
