This invention relates to improvements in locks, one object of the invention being to provide means to safeguard the lock againsty surreptitious operation.
A further object is to provide means which will lock the plug member against turning, in the event an attempt be made to operate the lock by driving a chisel or other instrument into the key-way and then attempting to forcibly turn the plug with the use of a wrench appliedV to the chisel or other instrument.
With these and other .objects in view, the invention consists in certain n ovel features as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

In the embodiment of the. invention shown in Figures 1 to Soof the drawings, a locktcylinder or casing 1s indicated at 1 and the same is provided -interiorly with recesses 2 for the reception of the tumblers (not shown) carried by a plug structure 3. Thislplu-gI structure comprises a core member 4 and a reinforcing shell 5, the latter being provided Pat its forward end lwith lufrs or extensions 6 which pass through slots? inl an end plateS showing another modiure 8 is a longitudinal sectional view a similar structure being disclosed inmy previous application Serial No. 141,302, and may be modified so far as my present invention is concerned. A groove 9 is formed within the cylinder near its forward end and receives the peripheral portion of the plate 8 in such manner that said plate may turn with the plug. A roll back cam 10 is carried by the plate 8 and is intended to manipulate a transversely disposed bolt (not shown), as will be readily understood.
The plug is provided with a cap or head 11 which is slotted as at 12 in line with the keyway of the plug and the peripheral edge porv tion of said head may be provided with anl annular groove 13 to receive a locking wire 14 which also enters a groove 15 in the inner wall of the cylinder vand said groove 15 is somewhat elongated -transversely so that slight longitudinal movement of the plugI may be permitted. The locking wire may be inserted through a tangential hole 16 in the cylinder wall, as disclosed in. a plication filed by Maxwell C. Maxwell, erial No. 126,556. The cylinder wall is formed with a recess at one end as at 17 (one end of said ref cess forming a shoulder 18) to permit limited longitudinal movement of the plug head for a purpose hereinafter explained.
, The shell 5 of theplug is provided in one end with recessesa t'o receive lugs 5"l prof jecting from the case 4 of the plug. The case 4 abuts against the cap or head 11 of the plug" and terminates a shortdistance from the plate 8 at the forward end of the shell 5 as indicated at 5,the lugs 5b insuring a lclearance between the cap 11 and shell 5. Upon initial movement of the ca 11 toward the shell 5 as hereinafter described, the lugs 5b will be sheared off.
A longitudinal groove 19 (preferably dovetail in form) .'s formed in the inner wall of the lock cylinder and receives a locking bar notched portion of the plate 8 so as to posi-` tively lock the plug 3 against turning.
Should attempt be made to surreptitiously 'an attempt to turn the plug.
In the embodiment of the invention shown h force the lock by inserting a chisel or other instrument into the keyway of the plug, the latter would be forced forwardly and the head of the plug moving in the recess 17 and engaging the bar 20, would force the latter forwardly and cause it to enter the notch 21 inthe plug plate 8, thus positively locking the plug against rotation, even though power be applied to the chisel with the use ofa wrench 1n in Figure 9, a transversely movable bolt 22 carried by the lock cylinder is shown. In this construction, the cylinder 23 carries a locking rod 24 intended to be moved into the transmission casing of a motor car whereby to lock the shifter mechanism, and in order that such movement of the rod 24 may be effected, the lock cylinder 23 must be capable of longitudinal movement. To normally lock the cylinder 23 and rod 24 against movement, the transverse bolt 22 will be caused to engage a suitable easing (not shown) in which the cylinder is movable. In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 9, a locking bar 25 is' mounted in a suitable groove 26 in the cylinder wall and is engageable by the head 11 ofthe plug 3 upon attempt -to force the lock in the manner previously explained, and adapted by pressure of the head to be forced forwardly behind the bolt 22, so that retraction of said bolt will be prevented and as said bolt is conwall of the cylinder and into locking relation to the plug, the plug may largement 27,

While the member for locking the plug to the cylinder is shown as being mounted in the adapted to be moved be made to carry a locking member adapted to be moved into locking relation to the cylinder, as shown in Figure 10a. In this contruction, the plug 4a has mounted in its wall, a radially disposed in 28 to enter a hole 29 in the Wall of said opening by a screw driver or other instrument 30 forced into the keyway of the plug. This modification is fully disclosed and claimed in my lap lication liled on even date herewith Serial go. 159,423.

4. In a cylinder lock, normally inoperative i plug and the cylinder adapted for interlocking operation, the locking means of one being movable to interlock with the other upon attempted forcefulmovement of the plug.
5. The combination with the cylinder and plug of a cylinder lock, of a locking bar carried by the cylinder and engageable by the plug to move said locking bar into locked rela-- tion to the plug and prevent turning of the latter.

The combination with a lock cylinder, and a plug structure including a head and part adapted to be engaged bya locking bar, of a locking bar carried by the cylinder and engageable by the plug head to cause said locking bar to effect locked engagement with the plug and lock the latter against turning.
7 The combination of a lock cylinder having interior longitudinal groove, a plug, a
groove and engageable by the plug when the latter is surreptitiously forcedforwardly, and means cooperable with said locking bar to lock the plug against turning when said bar is forced forwardly.
8;' The combination of a'lock cylinder having an interior longitudinal groove, a plug aving a head at one end and bar engaging means at the other end, and a locking bar located inl said groove behindv the head of the plug and adapted to-engage the bar engaging means of the plug to lock the latter against turning when said plug is .surreptitiously forced forwardly.
9. The combination with the cylinder and plug of a lock, of a plug, and a member mounted in the cylinder and driven upon surreptitious operation of path of the member on the plug whereby to prevent turning of the plug.

In a cylinder lock, a cylinder member, a plug member having a keyway therein, and c0- operative interlocking elements on the plug member and the cylinder member, one of Said interlocking elements being movably mounted on one of said members, but normally inoperative and adapted to be rendered operative A upon attempted forceful operation of said plug member through said keyway to permanently lock the plug against operation.

In a lock, the combination with a cylinder member and a plug member having a key- Way therein, one of said members having a prepared portion, of a movable eleinent'cai'- ried by the other member and immovable element carried by the other member and immovable relatively thereto in the normaloperation of said lock, said element being arranged to move by forceful surreptitious operation of the plug member through said keyvvay to interlock the element with said prepared portion and disable the lock against operation.
