Be it known that we, Gnoncn S. HILL and AUGUsTUs C. SAXTON, citizens of the United States7 residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Locks, of which the following is aspecilicat-ion.
rThe present invention relates to means for locking two coaxial', relatively rotatabl-e members against rotation and is more especially designed to prevent relative rotation of the steering post and steering column of automobiles. Among the objects of our invention are to improve upon the construction -of steering post locks; to provide a new positive lock for the steering posts of automobiles; to improve upon the actuating mechanism of steering post locks; land to provide an improved construction of locks of the type described; and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear.
4Our invention further resid-es in the com- 5 bination, construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings and, while we have shown therein preferred embodiments of our invention, we desire the same to be understood as illustrative only and not as limiting our invention.

Referring more-in detail to the annexed drawings, numeral 1 designates the lock body which is provided internally with an aperture for the reception of the locking plunger 2. This locking plunger is actuated into locked and unlocked position by means of a pinion 3 whose teeth engage the cooperating teeth 4 of a rack formed in the locking plunger 2. rllhe pinion 3 is provided at its inner end with a pintle 5 which fits closely but rotates freely in an aperture in the lock body 1. At its opposite end7 four of the teeth of the pinion are cut away to form a reduced portion which may be inserted into the notch 6 in the connecting member 7 which is provided with a perforation 8 for the reception of a pin which passes through a corresponding perforation 9 in the reduced end of the pinion to fasten these two parts together. At its opposite end connecting member 7 is provided with a notch 10 which lits over a projection 11 on the inner end of the lock cylinder 12. Screws are passed through" the connecting member and into the rotatable element of the lock cylinder to fasten these two parts together. llt will therefore be seen that as the rotatable element of the lock cylinder is turned by means of the key of the lock the pinion will be rotated and this will in turn actuate the locking plunger 2 to force it into either advanced or retracted position. whereby to lock the steering column and steering post against relative rotation or to permit the same.
In theJ form of construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 a sleeve 13 is fastened to the steering post 14 by means of a key 15 and is provided as shown in Fig. 1 with a plurality of apertures tor the reception of the inner end of the locking bolt 2.
In the form of construction shown in Figs. 7 to 10 there are aligning perforations in the steering column 16 and the sleeve 17 which is inserted between the steering column and the steering` post 14. The locking bolt 2 is provided at its forward end with a reduced portion 2a which enters a socket in the steering post 14 in alignment Wiith the perforations in the steering column and sleeve. Except as specified the parts in this construction are similar to the corresponding parts in the previously described construction and further reference thereto Will therefore be unnecessary.
It will be obvious from the foregoing de?. soription and annexed drawings that this lock is not automatic im its character but requires manual actuation by means of the appropriate key, to be either locked or unlocked. lt is also clear that it is a very simple construction, easily applied, and positive in its action.
It is of course understood that the specific description of structure set forth above may be departed from Without departing from the spirit of our invention as set forth in this specification and the appended claims.
Having now described our invention, We claim 1. In a structure of the character described having a lock, a steering post, a steering column, a rotatable locking cylinder in said lock, a lock bolt for' positively connecting certain of said elements to prevent relative rotation thereof, and means for actuating said bolt including a pinion, said pinion having certain of its teeth cnt away to provide an angular integral; extension cooperatively connecting with the said locknof cylinder to form a rotatable driving extending in a direction opposite to that of the shank, and means forming a detachable driving connection between said project-ion and the rotatable cylinder.
3. ln ay steering post lock, a lock body adapted tobe attached to the steering cohunn and having a rotatable locking cylinder, a locking bolt shiftable therein to accomplish locking and; unlocking and provided 'with teeth, said cylinder having a coupling member thereon of angular cross-section, a pinion meshing With the teeth on the bolt, said pinion havingl a cooperative coupling member of corresponding cross-section detachably fitting the coupling member of said cylinder and said pinion having an integral shank fitting in a bearing in said body.
