SPRING STRUCTURE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED F.
States, residing at Chicago, in the county ol Cook and Statev of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful linprovenients in Spring Structures, of which the following is specification.`
My invention relates to spring structures to resiliently support the unattached end o r side of the hinged top,'or cover of a box seat.
@ne or' the objects of my invention is to provide a self-contained spring structure that may quickly be attached to a box and as conveniently be removed therefromvwithout requiring any change or modification oiP the box or its cover.
Locomotive engineers suil'er greatly from the relative rigidity of the seat provided for them in their engine cabs, trom the constant and harsh vibration caused by impact of the moving locomotive over the underlying rails. ln all such cabs an ordinary box is designed to contain the engineers tools and working equipment and alfords the only seat available for him. The cover for such boxes is usually hinged at one end, or side, and it is the object oli my invention to provide springs to yieldingly support the i'iree movable edge or' the hinged cover whereby to absorb the incipient vibrations that would otherwise be imparted to the person resting on the box cover.
The spring structures become the personal property of the engineer operating the particular engine and therefore it is highly desirable that the structure may be quickly taken from its position, under the box cover, when the engineer changes locomotives, and it is ifurther useful to have a device of this character without loose or detached parts.

The spring structure consists of a housing 9 in general cylindrical form, being cut away on each side, as at l0, to reduce its weight and provided with a laterally and downwardly extending hook l1, to extend over the upper edge of the box to support the structure thereon. A spring 12, extending above the upper edge of the structure 9, is secured at the bottoni by a pin 13, which passes entirely through the side walls of the cylindrical portion and overlies one or two or' the bottom convolutions of the spring, to hold it in place. with a pointed head ll to engage the side ot vthe box to prevent lateral movement of the structure when in place.
The device is exceedingly simple and is highly eflicient and satisfactory in operation for the purpose intended. To place a pair of the spring structures in proper position on thebox, with reference to the top. it is only necessary to place the hooks l1 over the top edge oi" the box, as shown inFigs. l and 2, and to permit the box cover oi top to rest upon the upper ends of the springs 12. lt is equally convenient to iemovethe structures i'roni the box simply by lraising the cover andflifting the devices troni their positions.
The spring l2 is made small, with reference to the inside of the cylindrical portion the metal part of the support, thereby to create friction and to make a noise.
